<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Heat exchanger The subject of the invention is a heat exchanger made up of elements forming an economizer, evaporator, superheater, arranged in series in the same envelope and made up of helical coils of different pitches.
It is known to adopt for these devices tubes wound in a coil. On the other hand, it is also known to use in heat exchangers tubes with small transverse fins, or grooves, or grooves, which have the effect of increasing the exchange surface of the tubes with the external fluid. Finally, it has already been proposed to use, to constitute the tube coils of these exchangers, different helix pitches, depending on the nature of the element they produce. Thus, for economizers, relatively small pitches are used, while for evaporators, much larger pitches are used so that the axis of the tube approaches the vertical.
When small transverse fins or grooves, for example helical, are provided on these tubes, the grooves remaining between the small fins or the grooves made on the tube must not be too inclined with respect to the general direction of the hot fluid circulating outside the tubes, otherwise vortices and pressure drops that are harmful to the operation of the device occur.
The exchanger forming the subject of the invention is characterized in that the coils with different pitch are provided with external fluid guide surfaces arranged transversely and obliquely with respect to the coils and forming an angle at most equal to 10 with respect to the direction of flow of the external fluid.
Deviating devices of this type could also, for example, impart a gyration movement to the hot fluid and send it over the evaporator tubes wound in helices in a direction close to the grooves or grooves provided on these tubes.
The appended drawing represents by way of example an embodiment of the exchanger which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 schematically represents the exchanger.
Fig. 2 schematically shows, on a larger scale, the evaporator of the exchanger of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 shows in perspective a diverter device arranged between the drums of the evaporator of FIG. 2.
The heat exchanger, intended to produce water vapor comprises, inside a casing a traversed in the direction of arrow F by the hot fluid, at the lower part, an economizer b, an evaporator c in which the water is transformed into steam, and a superheater d for the superheating of the steam produced. These elements of the exchanger are formed by tubes wound in coils. These tubes may be of circular section, or of lenticular section, optionally with unevenly curved faces, or of any other shape.
In the case of the economizer, the winding pitch of the tubes b is relatively small, as has been shown schematically for a single tube in FIG. 1. On the contrary, in the case of the evaporator c where the vapor is given off, it is necessary that the tubes c come closer to the vertical, and the winding pitch is much larger, as shown schematically. for a single tube c. Finally, for the superheater d, the winding pitch of the tubes is intermediate between the previous two.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Each of the devices b, c, d, consists of several tubes wound in helices, in coaxial layers.
Thus, as we see in fig. 2 on a larger scale, the evaporator c consists of three coaxial drums 1, 11, 111, having as a common axis the axis XX of the casing a and arranged so that, on each drum 1, 11, 111, the tubes c, which are of lenticular section, are practically in contact so as to form a continuous wall all along the drums 1, II, 111. The hot fluid F passes through the intervals between the drums.
All the tubes b, c, d used are provided with small fins, transverse or helical, with a height of the order of a millimeter, and leaving between them transverse, or helical, grooves on the surface of the tube. These small fins can be replaced by grooves, transverse or helical, provided on the outer surface of the tube.
In the case of an economizer such as b, where the winding pitch of the tubes is small, small transverse fins can be used, which will be located in a direction bordering on the vertical as shown in small lines on the tube b of fig. 1. In the case of the tubes of the evaporator c, the fins or the helical grooves have a relatively large pitch, which can go up to the vertical, and it has been shown in FIG. 1, the general direction of these fins, or grooves, on the spiral wound c tube. The inclination of these fins or grooves may be such that it is parallel to the general direction of the axis of the helically wound tube.
Ultimately, when the tube is not wound in a helix, it is simply a tube with longitudinal fins.
For the superheater d. the pitch chosen for the fins or grooves is intermediate, as has been shown schematically by small transverse lines on the fia. 1.
The fins or grooves which are formed on the elements b, c, d are thus mounted on the tubes so that the hot fluid flowing in the direction of arrow F makes a relatively small angle, at most equal to 10 '), with the direction of the fins or grooves provided on the tubes. For economizer b, since the winding pitch of the tubes b is very low, the tight-pitch helical fins will be suitably inclined as desired on the direction of the fluid F, or even fins can be used which are simply perpendicular to the axis of the tube.
In the case of the evaporator, the problem is more complicated since the orientation of the helical fins, or grooves, may not be the same on the half of the tube opposite the axis XX and on the half of the tube facing towards axis XX. In any case, so that the angle made by this orientation of the grooves with the direction of the fluid F is of the order of 100, indicated above, deviating devices are used, mounted on the path of the fluid F, so that at the exit of these deflector devices, the flow is suitably oriented with respect to the surfaces of the tubes which it must sweep.
To this end, between the tube drums I, II, III, of the evaporator shown in fig. 2, as has been shown schematically in FIG. 3, guide surfaces, possibly left, such as e, with the help of which the fluid stream F, originally directed from top to bottom, will bend to exit following the arrows G, and will then be directed so as to make with the grooves f of the outer tube g, and the grooves / t of the inner tube i, the desired angle of about 10.
These guide surfaces, or deflectors e, can be distributed over the entire height of the evaporator, and one can use to produce or support them, the spacers which serve to maintain the gap between the tubes of the drums 1, II, 111. Said surfaces e can be oriented so as to obtain an effect of gyration of the flow of fluid F, around the axis XX, in the apparatus, so, again, to orient this fluid in the desired direction. according to that of the grooves provided on the tubes.
The diverter e schematically shown in FIG. 3, is constituted by two left surfaces el, e2 between which is provided a diverging part which ensures the formation behind it of an external volume of fluid where the static pressure is increased to the detriment of the speed of the fluid, so that thus achieves a kind of fluid baffle onto which the fluid F arriving at the baffle in question deflects.
It is expected that deflectors could even be used in certain cases to slow down the gyration if it tended to become excessive and followed too closely the fins or grooves provided on the tubes.
It will be noted that, in FIG. 3, the grooves f are wound in the dextrorsum direction for the tubes g of the drum I. On the contrary, on the tubes i of the drum II, the grooves h are oriented in the sinistrorsum direction. In this way, over the entire internal surface (directed towards the axis XX) of the drum I, as well as over the entire external face (opposite the axis XX) of the drum 11, the general direction of the external fluid G coming out of the diverter remains roughly the same. It is expected however that one could use. to constitute all the drums I, II, III, tubes where the grooves would all be in the same direction.
In this case, the deflector devices such as e which are arranged in the intervals between the drums 1, 11, 111 would be bifurcated, to send part of the fluid F in one direction, towards one of the faces of the outer drum, and in one direction. quite different on the side which makes it vis-à-vis the inner drum.
