The so-called reflex sighting device of a diaphragm lens for a camera. The invention relates to a sighting device of the so-called reflex type of a diaphragm lens for a camera. In what follows, the expression camera will denote both a photographic camera and a cinematographic camera.
It is known that the so-called reflex sighting devices allow the operator to see directly and continuously the part of the subject which fits into the format of the sensitive surface contained in the camera. .
Sighting devices of this type comprise, on the path of the light rays passing through the objective, a surface such as, for example, a very thin layer of silver or aluminum deposited on glass, which, without preventing the direct transparent passage of the light rays, however, reflects a part of the light which is thus deflected laterally outside the objective. A deflected light beam is then obtained which, by passing through a more or less complex optical system, will form on a diffusing surface such as a frosted glass, an image reproducing on a more or less large scale that which forms on the sensitive surface contained in the camera. It is this image that the operator observes, either with the naked eye or through a magnifying glass.
These known sighting devices have in particular the drawback of using a diffusing surface. This surface which sends to the eye rays coming from all the points of the image which forms on it, is the cause of a considerable loss of light, because the pupil of the eye can only receive a small part of each of the very open beams which form by diffusion, from the various points of the image observed on the diffusing surface.
To take into account the loss of light, and to obtain sufficient brightness of the image, it is necessary to take by reflection a fairly large fraction of the light which passes through the objective, to the detriment of the light beam which passes through transparency through the metallized layer to go to form the image on the sensitive surface contained by the camera.
The sighting device according to the invention reduces or even eliminates the drawbacks which have just been pointed out.
The invention relates to a so-called reflex sighting device of a diaphragm lens for a camera, comprising, on the path of the light rays passing through the lens, a reflecting surface which captures part of the light, and which directs it towards an optical sighting system, characterized in that said optical sighting system is arranged to give a final real image of the reflecting surface at the output of said optical sighting system, substantially at a place where the eye which carries out sighting can come and be placed. The appended drawing represents, by way of example, a particular embodiment of the object of the invention and a variant.
Fig. 1 shows a plan with partial section of an objective for a camera equipped with this embodiment, the camera being shown diagrammatically in phantom lines.
Fig. 2 is a view on a larger scale of the part of the device comprising the reflecting surface.
Fig. 3 is a section along 111-111, fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section along IV-IV, fig. 1.
Fig. 5 shows in section part of an alternative embodiment. The device shown in the drawings includes a frame 1 which is screwed by means of a thread 2 on the camera 3. The frame 1 contains, as usual, lenses 4, 5 and 6, intended to form, alone or in combination with others, the image, in the plane of the sensitive surface 29. The frame 1 also contains a diaphragm 7 controlled from the outside by a rod 8. These various elements do not do well. not understood part of the invention.
To return the image of the subject to the side, a small reflecting surface 9 is used, consisting of a reflecting layer such as, for example, a layer of silver deposited on one of the faces of a glass wedge 10. The corner 10 is glued, for example with balsam of Canada, on another corner 11, the angles of the corners being such that, when they are glued one on the other, their whole constitutes a blade with parallel faces, perpendicular to the optical axis of the lens.
In the particular embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the bonding plane which carries the silver layer is inclined by 600 on the axis of the objective, this axis being moreover coincident with the main ray of the beam coming from the center of the subject.
After reflection on the reflecting surface 9, the light beam which comes from the subject meets the entry face 12 of the corner 11. It then undergoes a total reflection and then leaves via the face 13 of the corner 11, this face having moreover been cut so that the axis of the beam coming from the reflecting surface is approximately perpendicular to it. Under these conditions, the beam is not deflected at its exit from the corner 11. The main ray of the beam which leaves the corner 11 makes an angle of 600 with the optical axis of the objective.
The deflected beam then passes through a blade with parallel faces 14 which closes the mount 1 of the lens by preventing the entry of dust.
In this part, the frame 1 externally forms a dovetail 15 where the frame 16 of the viewfinder optical system is fixed. The latter can thus be removed at will, which facilitates in particular the positioning of the lens on the camera.
In the frame 16 of the viewer optical system is fixed a prism 17 having two faces 18 and 19 forming between them, at 30, an angle of 90o (Figs. 1 and 3). This prism causes the main ray of the deflected beam to be parallel to the optical axis of the objective, that is to say to take the direction 20 (fig. 1). At the same time, the prism 17 straightens the observed image, which can then be seen under the same conditions as if the subject were directly viewed.
Before the prism 17 is arranged a lens 21, which functions as an objective of the viewfinder optical system in order to give a real image of the observed subject, which, through a collecting lens 22, is formed in the plane 23 of a frame 24. The role of the collecting lens 22 is to make the beam which passes through the viewfinder converge towards the eye 25.
A last lens 26 functioning as a magnifying glass has the effect of rejecting at a sufficient distance in front of the eye 25 the image seen directly by the latter, which is con judged through the magnifying glass 26 of the real image of the subject. which forms in plane 23.
The real image of the subject is limited by the frame 24 so that the part visible by the # il corresponds exactly to the image formed on the sensitive surface 29.
The center of the pupil of 1 '# i1 25 is placed at point 27 situated in the zone where the image of the reflecting surface 9 is formed through the whole of the viewfinder.
The sighting device which has just been described therefore allows the observation of an image which corresponds exactly to the image which forms on the sensitive surface 29, the observed image being extremely bright. Of course, for the convenience of sighting, it is possible, as shown, to complete the frame 16 of the optical sighting system with an eyecup 28.
Eye 25 receives, as has been said, the deflected beam directly. It is then obvious that if the reflecting surface 9 has an image held entirely in the pupil of the eye 25, all the rays which it sends into the viewfinder optical system are received by the eye and it does not. there is no light lost. For this to be the case, the reflecting surface 9, the shape of which can moreover be any, must have sufficiently small dimensions, for example a few square millimeters. The dimensions of the reflecting surface 9 obviously depend on the magnification produced by the viewfinder optical system, in practice this magnification is chosen to be little different from unity.
Given the small dimensions of the reflecting surface 9, the latter intercepts only a small fraction of the beams passing through the objective, so that it can be made completely opaque without hindering the formation of the image on the lens. sensitive surface 29. Of course, the calculation of the graduation which indicates the various apertures of the diaphragm must take account of the part blocked by this surface. Despite its small size, the reflecting surface 9 must receive rays coming from all the points of the subject, whatever the opening of the diaphragm 7 at which one operates.
The variation of the aperture of the diaphragm obviously has no effect on the aiming of the so-called reflex positive device when the reflecting surface 9 precedes the diaphragm (fig. 5), in which case it can be placed quite far from it. But if it follows the diaphragm as shown in fig. 1 and 2, it is necessary for it to be in the vicinity of the center of the diaphragm so as to capture rays coming from all the points of the subject, even when the passage of these rays is limited by a small opening.
Furthermore, whatever the position of the reflecting surface 9 with respect to the diaphragm 7, the reflecting surface must be centered on the optical axis of the objective.
Of course, the device could undergo modifications of details.
For example, instead of the deflected rays undergoing two reflections in the corner 11, they could undergo only one reflection, by tilting the reflecting surface 9 in a different way, the tilt can be 45o on the axis lens optics. In this case, the main ray of the deflected beam is then perpendicular to the optical axis of the objective.
In addition, the combination of lenses 21, 22 and 26, constituting the. viewfinder optical system, could be replaced by an equivalent combination with regard to the formation of the real image of the subject, as well as the real image of the reflecting surface 9. The conditions to be observed are that the reflecting surface 9 has a real image located substantially in a position which will be occupied by the pupil of the eye, the image of the surface preferably having dimensions smaller than those of the pupil, and that the real image of the subject is formed in front of the eye at a distance between the limits of accommodation of the eye.
Under these conditions, all of the light deflected by the reflective surface enters the eye which conveniently observes a highly readable image. Finally, as has already been suggested, the reflecting surface 9 could be placed in front of the diaphragm 7 (FIG. 5), instead of being placed behind.
