The present invention relates to a jet propeller and aims to considerably simplify the design and piloting of jet airplanes.
The jet thruster according to the invention is characterized by a propulsion nozzle provided, on the one hand, with guide means serving to impose on the streams of the gas stream a curved path so as to incline them relative to the gas stream. axis of the nozzle and, on the other hand, controlled deflection means making it possible to act on streams of the current so as to direct them towards said guide means, all in such a way that one can, by putting into action said deflection means, directing at least part of the gas stream towards said guide means to cause this part to flow in threads inclined with respect to the axis of the nozzle and, by disabling the release means viation,
causing the entire gas stream to form a propulsion jet which flows without disturbance along the axis of the nozzle, the major part of the section of the latter remaining permanently free.
The drawing represents, by way of example, some embodiments of the object of the invention, as well as a variant. Fig. 1 is an axial sectional view of the nozzle of a first embodiment. Half. upper and lower half of this figure show the deflection device in two different operating positions.
Figs. 2 and 3 are, respectively, a cross section of FIG. 1, according to 11-11 and a view on a larger scale of part of FIG. 1.
Fig. 4 is an axial section of a variant, the upper half and the lower half of this figure showing the deflection device in two different operating positions.
Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 show two other embodiments, FIG. 8 being a section of FIG. 5 according to VI-VI and FIG. 10 a rear view of the nozzle drawn in axial section in FIG. 7. In fig. 5 and 7, the upper and lower halves show the moving parts in two different operating positions.
Fig. 9 shows a profile view of a jet aircraft provided with a fourth embodiment. Figs. 10 and 11 are sections, on a larger scale, according to X-X and XI-XI.
Figs. 12 and 13 also show the nozzles of two other embodiments in axial half-section.
In the propellant to which FIGS. 1 to 3, the propulsion nozzle R, supplied with a current of gas coming, through channel C, from a source not shown which would be situated to the right of FIG. 1 (in a turbojet, these gases will come from the exhaust of the turbine which drives the air compressor), is provided with a cone 11 movable along the axis of the nozzle in a fixed guide 12, in order to adjust the section of said nozzle. The wall of the nozzle is pierced with an annular orifice 13, the two parts of the nozzle separated by said orifice being joined together by a certain number of spacers 14 parallel to the axis.
The internal wall of the front part of the nozzle gradually bends outwards at the location of the orifice 13, as shown at 15. Opposite this wall 15, the rear part of the nozzle has a concave surface 16 substantially parallel to the first. In the anterior part of the nozzle, the internal wall of the annular channel C has a shape which converges towards the rear (see the dotted lines drawn in 17), so that in normal operation, when nothing tends to deflect the current of gas arriving via channel C, this stream forms a jet flowing axially through the rear part of the nozzle without meeting wall 16 (see lower half of FIG. 1).
Inside the movable cone 11 is arranged a deflector device comprising four sectors 18, which are placed perpendicular to the axis. These sectors 18 are guided in an annular slot 19 of the cone, the two halves of which separated by this slot are joined together by the sleeve 20. The sectors 18 are each carried by an articulated support comprising a rod 21, one end of which is articulated at 22. on a ring 23 which can slide on the sleeve 20 and the other end of which carries the corresponding sector 18 (see FIG. 3). In its middle, each link 21 is articulated on a link 24 having a length equal to half of the link 21 and articulated at 25 on a ring 26 integral with the sleeve 20.
It follows from this arrangement that, when the ring 23 is moved along the sleeve 20, the axes connecting the rods 21 to the sectors 18 move radially in the plane of the slot 19. The sectors 18 can thus either be eclipsed. inside the cone 11, as in the case of the sector 18 'in the lower halves of FIGS. 1 and 2, or come to protrude on the surface of the cone, as for the three sectors 18 of FIG. 3 and for the sector shown in the upper half of FIG. 1.
The movement of the sleeve 23 is obtained by means of a finger 27 which can slide in a longitudinal slot 28 of the sleeve 20 and attached to a cable 29. This finger 27 is, moreover, fixed on a sleeve 30 slidably mounted in the sleeve 20. to allow a certain number of fingers 27 to be distributed around the axis and thus ensure good driving of the sleeve 23 when the cable 29 is moved. This cable passes over two pulleys 31, 32, the axes of which are mounted in the sleeve 20 .
By rotating one of these pulleys by suitable means, mechanical, pneumatic, electric or other, the pilot can either completely eclipse the sectors 18 inside the cone, the gas flow being thus directed entirely. towards the rear of the nozzle and providing a jet giving the full thrust available, or projecting all the sectors outside the cone to deflect the gases through the annular orifice 13. At this moment, in effect, the sectors form on the wall of the cone an obstacle which detaches the gases from this wall. As the sectors are placed upstream of the orifice 13, the gases which separate from the wall of the cone 11, but which remain stuck to the wall 15, tend to bend towards the orifice 13 and exit through this orifice.
The annular deflector 33, of the same shape as the wall 15 and carried by the spacers 14 at a small distance from this wall, guides the marginal layer of the deflected gases and forces it to bend while remaining stuck against the wall 15 , which accentuates the deviation. The deflected gases exit through the orifice 13 which reigns all around the nozzle, the propellant thrust is then abruptly canceled, without the deflected gases producing any radial reaction.
The thrust can also be canceled at any speed to improve flexibility. If now the outlet orifice 13 is positioned so as to deflect the gases deflected towards the front of the airplane, which can be achieved either by a sufficiently curved force from the walls 15 and 16, so that the tangent to their profile, at the outlet, either directed forwards, or by means of movable deflector flaps placed outside the orifice 13 and which will be opened to me at the desired time. Finally, cancel the thrust, as has just been explained, by projecting sectors 18, but also obtain a negative thrust providing braking, slowing down,
during landing is thus accompanied by braking which is entirely favorable to rapid landing.
It is possible, in the example which has just been described, to increase the angle of deflection of the gases towards the front to obtain a braking effect, by carrying out a blowing suitably oriented on the gases already deflected and exiting through the orifice 13.
For this purpose, compressed air introduced in a suitable manner into the rear part of the nozzle which comprises the wall 16 (this compressed air possibly coming in particular from the compressor of the reactor through the rods 14, made hollow) can be blown. through an annular slot 16a provided in this pa king so as to take off the gases deflected from the wall 16 and to bend them towards the front of the reactor. This auxiliary blowing makes it possible to remove the grid of deflector vanes shown in FIG. 4, which leads to a notable saving in weight.
It should also be noted that the device shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 with walls 15, 16 sufficiently curved to allow a reversal of the gases forwards makes it possible to graduate, as can be seen, the reduction in thrust for a given engine speed and, likewise, the reversal of this thrust for braking.
Indeed, if the deviation of the gases is total through the orifice 13 for a complete projection of the sectors 18 out of the surface of the cone 11, so that the gases returned to the front produce an intense braking action, a less protrusion of the sectors 18 results in that only a part of the gases is deflected through the orifice 13 producing a negative thrust, while the rest of the gases continue to exit axially from the rear part of the nozzle giving a positive push.
By properly dosing, by the control device 32, the protrusion of the sectors 18, a positive, zero or negative value can be obtained for the resultant of the positive thrust and the negative thrust. The reactor of FIGS. 1 to 3 is therefore very flexible.
The variant of FIG. 4 differs from the embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 3 in that the movable cone 11 carries an annular obstacle 40 which is fixed on this cone. This obstacle can be covered or uncovered by the movement of a movable cowling 41 which moves parallel to the axis and such that, when its point 42 abuts on the obstacle 40, the profile of the cone is smooth and leaves the gas stream will flow normally backwards to form the propelling jet. This position of the mobile cowling 41 is shown on the lower half of FIG. 4, while the upper half shows the cowling revealing the obstacle 40, therefore in the position of deflection of the gas stream.
The movement of the cowling is produced by a cable device 29, similar to that of FIGS. 1 and 3, which acts on a sliding ring 23 on which are fixed the arms 43 carrying the mobile potage.
The deflected gases are collected by a grid of annular vanes 44 allowing a reversal of the gases close to 180, therefore significant braking of the movement of the propelled airplane. Other vanes or deflectors, not shown, can make it possible to divide the gases flowing forwards to protect various sensitive parts of the airplane, such as the wings or the empennages.
In the embodiment of FIGS. 5 and 6, the propulsion nozzle is of circular section and comprises, in the axis, a tapered body 45 carried by arms 46. This tapered body is hollow and has at 47 a circular slot through which one can eject into the nozzle, in a direction more or less normal to the axis, of the compressed air arriving by a pipe 46a and taken, for example, from the compressor of the propellant, to cause the deviation of the gases. The deflected gases exit through the annular orifice 48 which has been previously opened on the wall of the nozzle by moving, rearwardly, the rear part 49 of the latter (see upper half of fig. 5 ).
This part 49 is carried by sliding rods 50 on which the pistons 51 of hydraulic motors act. The guide walls 51 and 52 have a suitable curvature to cause the desired angle of deflection of the gases. In the position of the rear ring 49 corresponding to the normal use of the jet in propulsion (lower half of Fig. 5), no protrusion exists and the nozzle therefore gives no drag.
In the embodiment of FIGS. 7 and 8, the propulsion nozzle is of rectangular section. A tapered cylindrical body 53 carrying two pairs of two symmetrical slots 54, intended to cause the deflection towards the guide organs by a compressed gas blowing opposing the normal jet, gas borrowed, for example, from the propellant compressor, is disposed towards the rear of the nozzle in its horizontal plane of symmetry. The slits 54, located most downstream, are intended to deflect the gases when they are slowed down.
Each slit acts only on the portion of the flow which is on its side, and all the more so as a greater pressure is applied to the blown gas. The feed pipes of the slots being separated (which is the case in FIG. 7), it is possible to obtain asymmetric deviations or not and of the desired intensity. These variations in deflection could also be obtained by a displacement of the streamlined body 53, perpendicular to the axis of the nozzle, so that it divides the flow into two equal or unequal parts.
The gases deflected by blowing are guided by the deflector flaps 55, articulated at 56 to allow them to be folded by means of jacks 57. The upper flap 55 is shown in the deflection position, the lower flap 55 in the folded position, reducing the drag in normal flight. These flaps carry boundary layer suction slits 58, intended to promote the adhesion of the flow to their wall. For this suction, part of the suction of the propellant compressor can be used, reinforcing it, if necessary, by reducing the air inlet section in the propellant.
The embodiment shown in FIGS. 9 to 11 makes it clear the usefulness of orienting the deflection of the gases in a given direction. The jet propeller P, shown in these figures, is placed under the fuselage and has its air inlet at PI and its propulsion nozzle at R. We see that it is advisable to avoid an upward deflection of the gases, as the hot gases could then damage the rear part of the aircraft and the control surfaces. The deviation is therefore made on both sides of the plane of FIG. 9.
For this purpose, a dis position similar to that of FIGS. 7 and 8 could be adopted in the case of a nozzle of rectangular section by arranging the tapered body 53 vertically. The nozzle of the embodiment of FIGS. 9 to 11 is of circular section, and has an arrangement similar to that described with reference to FIGS. 7 and 8.
The tapered body 53 is arranged vertically in the vertical plane of symmetry of the nozzle, a little upstream of the two outlet orifices 13 and 13a of the deflected gases, formed in arcs of a circle in the wall of the nozzle and provided with vanes guide deflectors 44, similar to those described with reference to FIG. 4. The tapered body 53 is provided with symmetrical slots 54 through which it is possible to blow compressed air from a pipe 54a in relation, for example, with the air discharge of the propellant compressor.
By this blowing of compressed air, the pilot will obtain, when he wishes, the deflection of the gases towards the symmetrical orifices 13 and 13a and, consequently, the cancellation of the thrust, without the rear part of the airplane risk of damage.
It should be noted that, when the deflection of the gases is effected by blowing compressed air from the compressor of the reactor and at the same time gradually slowing down the reactor, for example for a landing, the pressure of compressed air gradually decreases. It follows that the deflection effect can suddenly cease when the pressure of the air delivered by the compressor drops below a certain value, while the thrust that the reactor is capable of providing is still great. . There may be some.
danger in the maneuver. This danger can be overcome by adding to the air-blown deflectors, for example to the tapered bodies of Figs. 5 to 11, movable deflector obstacles, which will be retracted above a certain speed of rotation of the reactor and protruding to replace the blowing failing below a certain speed of the reactor.
Thus in the embodiment of FIG. 12, the propulsion nozzle of circular section is provided in its axis with a tapered body 45, similar to that described in FIGS. 5 and 6, with circular blowing slot 47 supplied by a tube 46a to deflect the gases through the annular orifice 13 provided with guide means. The front part 45a of the body 45 is movable axially, its movement being controlled by a hydraulic booster 45b housed in the fixed part.
When we move this part 45a to put it in the position shown in dotted lines, the slot 47 is considerably widened and the edge of the jet meets the sharp edge 45e that this slot presents on the fixed part of the body 45. This ridge then acts as a deflector obstacle replacing the blowing.
The embodiment of FIG. 13 corresponds to the example of FIG. 11 where it is a question of deflecting the gases through two opposite orifices 13 and 13a. The tapered body 53 has two flaps 53a articulated in 53b. These flaps can either occupy the position shown in solid lines for which they come in the extension of the surface of the body 53, or come to project in the position shown in dotted lines, when the blowing becomes insufficient, to then play the role obstacles deflecting the gases to the orifices 13 having the guide means.
