Process for producing a synthetic resin. The invention relates to the manufacture of new synthetic resins that have a particularly common combination of physical and chemical properties.
The new synthetic resins, as they can be prepared according to the invention, are polycondensation products with the chemical character of linear aromatic poly phosphates, in which the phosphorus atoms are in the long chain and to two chain-forming aromatic esterifying groups and an aromatic, one Esterifying group containing diphenyl group are bound.
They contain the following repetitive grouping:
EMI0001.0006
in the R 'the diplienyl or substituted diphenyl radical in the aryloxy-phosphoryl dichloride
EMI0001.0012
and R ″ represents the aromatic radical in the aforementioned aromatic dioxy compound.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the production of a new synthetic resin, which is characterized in that o-phenyl-phenoxy-phosphoryl dichloride is condensed with hydroquinone.
The reaction components are preferably used in an equimolecular quantity ratio.
The condensation is expediently carried out by heating the mixture of the compounds mentioned until the desired resinous properties have developed in the reaction mixture. It is preferred to heat several hours with gradually increasing temperatures as the reaction progresses, e.g. B. 100 to 180 C at the beginning to 1.90 to 240 C at the end.- It is advisable to stir the reaction mixture slowly, especially when its viscosity begins to increase. It goes without saying that moisture should be kept as far away as possible during the reaction. Preferably leads. the reaction is carried out in an inert atmosphere, e.g. B. nitrogen or carbonic acid.
You can work under normal or reduced pressure and it is advisable to suction off traces of hydrogen chloride at the end of the reaction. to remove from the viscous product. In certain cases the presence of catalysts, such as metallic tin, which remove hydrogen chloride, is desirable in order to aid the reaction to proceed.
The condensation can also be carried out by condensing the reaction components in a common solvent containing a hydrogen chloride acceptor. Examples of such common solvents are: ether, benzene, chloroform. The acceptor can e.g. B. a tertiary amine such as pyridine.
The novel resinous product obtainable by the process of the present invention can be purified if desired. You can z. B. dissolve in benzene and then from this solution: precipitate by adding ether. The precipitate can be further kneaded with fresh ether and then dried under ordinary or reduced pressure.
The new, fusible, heat-non-hardening product is insoluble in water, alcohol, ether, paraffin hydrocarbons, but clearly and transparently soluble in chlorine form, dioxane and mixtures of benzene and alcohol, as well as in mixtures of various other organic liquids, the would not solve it on their own. The solutions are suitable for the production of anti-corrosion, high-gloss, water and acid-resistant coatings on metals, glass, wood, rubber and many other surfaces.
The new resin material can also be used as a binding agent for adhesive purposes. It can be used as a putty for glass and has a refractive index of over 1.6. For glasses with. invisible connections are obtained with the same refractive index. It can also be used to join metals, rubber, wood and other materials. It is an excellent binder for insoluble fillers, pigments and the like, and if this resin is added above its softening point, thermoplastic mixtures of great toughness and interesting mechanical properties are obtained.
These thermoplastic mixtures can be used for the production of gramophone records and similar articles which can be deformed to form sharp contours. Example: A mixture of equimolecular amounts of o-phenyl-plienoxy-pliospliory ldichloride (bp. 145 CC / 0.4 mm) and hydroquinone is placed in a metal bath in a slow-speed stirrer and an air-cooled cooler , from the end of which a tube leads to a liquid that absorbs hydrogen chloride, heated the glass vessel provided.
The content. The vessel is protected from the ingress of moisture by a Clilorealeiunirube. The evolution of hydrogen chloride begins at a bath temperature of about 150 ° C. and the reaction continues for 3 hours at this temperature, the mixture slowly changing into a clear liquid. 0.1 / o metallic tin is now added and the bath temperature is gradually increased to 190 ° C. After a total of 30 hours, the process is terminated.
The raw, resinous product obtained is, while it is still liquid, poured out of the vessel and allowed to cool to room temperature. It educates. a pale colored, transparent resin with good adhesion to glass and metals. Its softening point, determined using the ring and ball method, is 110 C. The acid number of the raw resin is 12.
A sample of the resin is cleaned by dissolving it in benzene and precipitating it with ether, which removes practically all of the starting compounds. The acid number of the purified resin is. 10.
The resin described in the previous example dissolves in chloroform and benzene alcohol solutions (80:20 vol.).
The difference between the one in the previous example. resin described and a resin prepared in an analogous manner from 2,4-dichlorophenoxy-phosphoryl dichloride and H @ -droquinone results in behavior during storage. Try the following comparison: 10 g of the resin prepared according to the example are dissolved in a mixture of 30 cm3 of methyl alcohol and 70 cm3 of benzene. Part of the solution is immediate. titrated and has an acid number of 10.
The remainder of the solution is kept for 30 days and a sample of it is titrated again. The acid number is again 10. The resin, which is obtained by evaporating part of the stored solution, remains clear after immersion in water for more than two weeks.
1.0 g of a resin prepared in an analogous manner from 2,4-di-chlorophenoxy-phosphoryl dichloride and hydroquinone is dissolved in a mixture of 30 a3 methyl alcohol and 70 emz benzene. Part of this solution is immediately titrated and has the acid number s 12. The remainder of the solution was stored for 30 days and a sample of it was titrated again. The acid number was 88.
The freshly prepared solution gives a resin with excellent water resistance on evaporation, but after 30 days of storage. it separates a deteriorated resin. This is reflected in the reduced drying speed and cloudiness of the resin if it is immersed in water for less than a day.
However, if you keep a sample of the resin of 2,4-dichlorophenoxy-pliosplioryidichloride and hydroquinone with the acid number 12 in a mixture of benzene and ethylene chloride, dissolved under dry conditions, for the same length of time, the resin deposit obtained can be more than two . To be immersed in water for weeks without becoming cloudy.
