Apparatus for the continuous heat treatment of a metallic element, such as a strip or a wire. This invention relates to an apparatus for the continuous heat treatment of a metallic element, such as a strip or a wire.
During the heat treatment of such metallic elements, the treated element is surrounded, during its passage through the chamber of a furnace, by an elongated, gas-tight muffle, inside which a non-oxidizing atmosphere is. maintained. The mittens used up to now are not satisfactory when the temperature exceeds about 1000 C.
Temperatures above this value are, however, necessary for certain heat treatments, for example for the annealing of austenitic stainless steel, and attempts have been made previously to use for such treatments muffles composed of elements. cast or fabricated from heat resistant alloy or steel. These mittens are of high cost and have not given satisfaction.
The apparatus of the invention for the continuous heat treatment of a metallic element, such as a strip or a wire, comprises a gas-tight tubular muffle, inside which a non-oxidizing atmosphere is formed. maintained, and which extends through the chamber of a treatment furnace,
it is characterized in that said muffle is constituted by a metal tube which is plastic at the treatment temperature and the walls of which are supported internally by support elements made of heat-resistant material, and externally by means allowing the longitudinal displacement of said tube in the oven chamber, inside which a non-oxidizing atmosphere is also maintained.
Since the muffle tube is in the plastic state at the processing temperature, said tube is not liable to rupture or deteriorate under the action of changes in temperature; it is preferably made of mild steel. Support elements. , can be, for example, of bare heat resistant steel or, of a refractory material.
The muffle of the apparatus which is the object of the invention is of a relatively low price. It remains gas-tight at high temperatures for an extended period.
The drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the object apparatus. of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the apparatus.
Figs. 2, 3 and 4 show, on a larger scale and in longitudinal section, different parts of the apparatus of FIG. 1.
Fig. 5 is a cross section taken along line 5-5 of the fie. 3.
The apparatus shown comprises a cylindrical furnace 10 through which extends a gas-tight muffle or tube 20 of rectangular cross-section, formed by mild steel plates welded to each other, as shown in FIG. 5. The muffle is not fixed to the oven, but rests on a flat sole 11 of the latter, intended to support the muffle while allowing it .de to move longitudinally with respect to it. in the oven when it expands or contracts due to changes in temperature.
The ends of the muffle tube protrude from the furnace in. not sant through openings 12 and 13 prati cées .dans the end walls of the latter.
The muffle tube is internally supported by support members 21 and 22 of heat resistant steel, which prevent it from flattening. The elements 21 present a section in the form of a U and are juxtaposed ide so as to constitute a channel.
The elements 22 are similar to the elements 21 and are arranged in an inverted position on the latter, so as to form, with the elements 21, a non-gas-tight tubular passage for the treated metal element.
The elements 22 are held in place on the elements 21, by means of positioning pins 23, the pairs of elements being able to be assembled so as to constitute short tubular elements which are introduced into the gas-tight tube 20. And which are free in said tube when the latter is in its upright primitive position.
The portion of the muffle which protrudes from the front end of the furnace is surrounded by a tubular: inlet chamber 30 formed by mild steel plates; the muffle is supported in said chamber by means of mild steel supports 31 which allow the longitudinal sliding of the tube of the muffle. A flange 32 of the rear end of the chamber 30 is bolted to a flange 14 in the casing of the furnace so as to form a gas-tight seal.
A flange 33 seen at the front end of the inlet chamber is attached to one end of a leather bellows tube 34, the other end of which is attached to an end cover 24 which closes. -. The front end of the muffle tube 20. The front end of the inlet chamber 30 is. thus connected to the front end of the tube of the muffle 20, so as to constitute a gas-tight seal and to allow the longitudinal movement of said tube due to the expansion or contraction of the latter under the influence of changes the temperature inside the oven.
The end cover 24 has a slot through which a strip of metal 50 which is to be treated enters the muffle. Sealing gaskets 25 are held against the outer face of the end cover 24 by lower and upper face plates 26.
The neighboring edges of these linings protrude from the edge of the mouth of the slot in the end cover 24 and thus form lips which resiliently press on the upper and lower surfaces of the metal strip 50 and thus constitute a practically gas-tight seal at the inlet of the muffle.
In the upper faceplate 26 of the block are fixed near its end two loop bolts to which are attached cables 27. These cables, pass over pulleys 28 and are loaded by .weights 29, so that a traction longitudinal or exerted on the muffle tube.
As a result of the traction thus exerted, the muffle tube is unlikely to warp when it expands due to an increase in temperature, because the muffle can stretch out and move longitudinally with respect to the furnace and to the entrance chamber that surrounds and supports it.
The rear end of the muffle 20 protrudes only a small amount from the rear wall of the furnace; this end is welded to a terminal cover 24a which comprises an opening of the same size as the step left free between the support elements 21 and 22.
A mild steel cooling tube 40 which is aligned longitudinally with the muffle has at its front end a flange 41 which is sealed, on the one hand, to the end cover 24a of the muffle and, on the other hand. , to a flange 15 that presents .the rear part of the oven casing. The cooling tube 40 is surrounded by a water jacket 42. The rear end of the cooling tube 40 is provided with a gas-tight seal 43 similar to that of the inlet of the muffle tube and through which the gasket. metal strip 50 leaves the sealed enclosure formed by the muffle and the cooling tube.
A non-oxidizing atmosphere is kept bare in said sealed enclosure by the introduction, -in the latter, of cracked ammonia or another reducing or neutral gas, via a pipe 44 connected to the cooling tube. 40. This non-oxidizing atmosphere serves, on the one hand, to prevent oxidation of the metal strip 50 which is being treated and, on the other hand, to prevent the interior of the muffle tube. be attacked.
Although the enclosure constituted by the soft tube 20 and the cooling tube 40 is substantially gas-tight, however, there will inevitably be leaks at the points of penetration of the strip 50 into said enclosure and of exit from the latter. To maintain the purity of the non-oxidizing atmosphere, a slight overpressure is. mainte bare inside the enclosure, and fresh gas is introduced into the latter: the latter continuously, through the pipe 44, to compensate for the losses.
A non-oxidizing atmosphere is also maintained in the closed space formed by the furnace chamber and the inlet chamber in which the muffle tube is placed, by the introduction @ of cracked ammonia or another. reducing or neutral gas, via a pipe 16 which passes through the wall .du furnace. This non-oxidizing atmosphere protects the outside of the tube. muffle, so that said tube is not attacked.
The strip of metal 50 to be treated is unwound continuously from a supply reel 51 and passes through the joint formed by the gaskets 25 to enter the non-oxidizing atmosphere prevailing at the same time. inside the mitten.
The strip passes through the tubular channel constituted by the reinforcing elements 21 and 22; and as it moves through the oven chamber, it is heated to the desired temperature. On leaving the muffle 20, it immediately caught in the cooling tube 40, and always maintained in the same, non-oxidizing atmosphere, it is re-cooled in this tube 40 due to the presence of the water jacket. surrounding said tube.
The tape exits the tube, cooling by not passing through the seal 43, then it is wound up on a take-up reel 52.
It should be noted that at the operating temperature of the furnace, the muffle tube 20 constitutes a more or less flaccid casing which is mounted such that it can move freely relative to its supports. The tube can thus withstand the stresses due to temperature changes, which eliminates the risk of rupture of the welds and guarantees the tightness of the tube.
The tube itself has low mechanical strength, but it is supported on the outside by the flat floor of the furnace on which it rests, and on the inside by the heat-resistant support elements 21 and 22, support members which maintain good mechanical resistance to processing temperatures and prevent the tube from flattening.
The heat-resistant support members which provide a substantially continuous support for the waterproof casing are not rigidly connected to each other, and due to their relatively small size and simple shape, they are not rigidly connected to each other. There is no risk of breaking or splitting under the action of temperature changes, which would be the case if an attempt were made to connect them to each other, so as to constitute a sealed enclosure.
