Process for the preparation of the a, @ - di- [6-chloro-benzimidazyl- (2)] - ethylene. It has been found that a, ss-di- [6-chloro-benzimidazyl- (2)] - ethylene is obtained if a, ss-di- [6-chloro-benzimidaz3 = 1- (2)] - Ethane treated at elevated temperature finit de hydrogenating agents.
Suitable dehydrating agents are, for example, mild oxidizing agents. Examples are: compounds of divalent mercury, such as mercury acetate or mercury oxide; Potassium permanganate or brownstone; Copper oxide or copper sulfate; Hydrogen peroxide; Selenium dioxide; Platinum oxide; but especially ferric salts, such as ferric sulfate, ferric chloride or potassium ferricyanide.
Another group of dehydrating agents are the elements selenium and sulfur.
Finally, dehydrogenation catalysts such. B. finely divided nickel, copper, platinum or palladium, be it by itself or applied to a carrier, can be used.
However, the most suitable dehydrating agents are mild oxidizing agents such as ferric sulfate.
The treatment with the dehydrating agents is carried out at an elevated temperature, e.g. B. at 80-300, preferably in the presence of solvents for the a, ss-di- [6-chloro-benzimidazyl- (2)] -ethane, z. B. with the addition of glacial acetic acid or dilute mineral acid. So you can z. B. the soluble in glacial acetic acid mercuric acetate on the solution of a, ss-di- [6-chloro-benzimidazyl- (2)] - ethans in glacial acetic acid to act, z. B. at 100 to 150. Ferric chloride can e.g.
B. be brought to action at 135 to i-10, before geous in the presence of v erdünriter sulfuric acid.
The a, ss-di- [6-chloro-benzimidazyl- (2)] - ethylene obtained according to the present process forms a light yellow powder, the alcoholic solution of which fluoresces bluish in ultraviolet light. It can be used as an optical bleach.
Example: 3.3 parts of a "B-di- [6-chlorobenzimidazyl- (2)] -ethane are dissolved in 25 parts of glacial acetic acid, and 6.8 parts of mercuric acetate are dissolved in 30 parts of glacial acetic acid The combined solutions are then heated to 135-140 for 3 hours, an orange-red precipitate forming after a short time, and the glacial acetic acid is then distilled off in vacuo.
The gray-yellow residue is boiled with plenty of 10% hydrochloric acid, the poorly soluble dichlorohydrate of the dehydrogenation product being formed. It is filtered hot and allowed to cool, whereupon the dichlorohydrate precipitates in bright yellow crystals, which are filtered off. To prepare the free base, the filter is soaked in hot alcohol with the addition of conc. Dissolved ammonia and stirred the clear solution into a large excess of water, with the light yellow base flocculating.
The filter material is filtered and washed neutral with water and dried at 100.
The a; ss-di- [6-chloro-benzimid-azyl- (2)] -ethylene purified in this way forms a light yellow powder.
The a, ss- di- [6-chloro-benzimidazyl- (2)] -ethane used as starting material is made from 1-chloro-3,4-diaminobenzene and succinic acid, with the addition of 15% hydrochloric acid by refluxing for 48 hours available.
