Ammunition case formed by a plastic case and a metal base.
Plastic ammunition cases and their manufacturing processes are already known. These ammunition cases formed of a plastic case and a metal base are characterized in that in the assembly of the case and the base, it is the metal base which surrounds the plastic case. . The case is fixed to the base by screwing, by means of tenons, grooves or any other. This arrangement has the advantage that the explosion, instead of tending to separate the case from the base, wedges it in the base and thus ensures the tightness which is essential. This method of assembly gives complete satisfaction with regard to resistance. However, it has some drawbacks.
In particular, whatever care is taken in the assembly, there may always be a slight difference in diameter between the case and the base where they are connected; this jump can create a collision when loading, in particular in the case of automatic weapons.
In addition, the differences in deformation in the weapon, during firing, cause play between the base and the case.
To avoid these drawbacks, and to facilitate manufacture, the sleeve forming the object of the present invention consists of a plastic case and a metal base having the general shape of a cup with a bottom provided with an extraction bead and a cylindrical side wall. This socket is characterized by the fact that the side wall of the base is embedded in the rear part of the plastic case so as to leave the extraction bead free and providing the socket with a smooth plastic outer wall, without jumps detrimental to operation while ensuring tightness during firing and the cohesion of the assembly.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment and a variant of the sleeve according to the invention.
Fig. 1 shows, in axial section, a sleeve. This socket, manufactured by injection molding, comprises a plastic case 1 and a metal base 2. The base has the general shape of a cup with a bottom provided with an extraction bead and a side wall of cylindrical shape. . This side wall is embedded in the plastic material of the rear part of the case. Grooves 3 formed internally and externally on the side wall of the base provide. the joining of the two parts.
A sleeve is thus obtained having a perfectly regular and smooth outer surface over its entire length, the base only emerges over the desired length to leave free the extraction socket 4. The base of the base 3 which, on its external face carries the primer, also forms, by its internal part, the bottom of the chamber of the socket; the outer metal boss 7 serves as an anvil for the primer. In 8 are pierced the vents through which the flame of the primer communicates to the load housed in the case. The plastic p-u'-c "internally covers the metal base; it ensures tightness when fired and good adhesion of the base and the case.
In fig. 3 shows a variant according to which the base is fixed to the case by screwing. For this purpose, the cylindrically shaped side wall of the base is threaded internally and externally, as shown at 10. while the plastic part 9 is provided with two corresponding threads.
The two parts can be assembled either by screwing or, in the case where the sleeve is injection molded, by te nons, grooves, ridges, knurling of the metal part, on which it suffices to mold the case. In any case, the side wall of the base is embedded in the rear part of the plastic case so as to leave the extraction bead free.
In this way, any dangerous jump can be avoided on the outer surface of the socket, but the strength and sealing advantages inherent in the plastic embedding inside the metal base are retained.
The sleeve thus composed has the advantage. by its metal base, to offer the extractor a resistant metal part, to present for the primer a percussion device on metal, therefore safe, and to have metal holes as vents which do not risk to be damaged by the flame of the primer.
The arrangement described also has the advantage of bringing significant simplifications in the manufacture of such sockets. Indeed, the molding easily gives a precise external shape which does not require any additional machining or grinding work. The metal part does not require a great machining perfeetion, except for the bead, used for extraction. It can therefore be manufactured economically by bar turning, for example.
In addition, in injection molding, or plastic molding manufacturing processes! the withdrawal of the plastic material causes a clamping on the metal part which increases the rigidity of the assembly.
