Iron-chromium-aluminum alloy resistant to high temperatures. There are alloys of iron, chromium and aluminum known, which are relatively moderately very resistant to the effects of high temperatures. Alloys of this type are preferably those which, in addition to the main component iron, have chromium contents of 20 to 35% and aluminum contents of 1-10%.
The present invention relates to an iron-chromium-aluminum alloy which is resistant to high temperatures and which has a thorium content which increases the scale resistance of the alloy. It has been found that the scale resistance of heat-resistant iron-chromium-aluminum alloys can be increased considerably if thorium metal is added to them.
Even traces of thorium improve the scale strength. For practical conditions, contents of 0.001-5% thorium come into consideration. In certain cases, higher additions of thorium can also be given. The quantities to be used depend on the intended use, for example with regard to increasing the heat resistance (scale resistance), on the mechanical properties of the alloy and, finally, on economic considerations.
To influence the mechanical properties of the alloys, for example with regard to machinability, small amounts of another metal or other metals can be incorporated into them. Metals through which the mechanical properties of the alloys can be improved are, for. B. manganese, silicon, Magne sium and the like. As additional amounts, for example, those of 0.01-2 0/0 are possible. In general, the amount of these additives will be regulated in such a way that, on the one hand, the desired improvements in the alloys are achieved in mechanical terms, but on the other hand, the scale resistance of the alloys is not impaired.
The alloys are a particularly valuable material for heat-resistant objects, such as resistance means, in particular heating wires for electrically heated ovens and the like.
Tests have shown that the service life of resistance wires for electrically heated ovens and the like, consisting of an alloy of 65% iron, 30% chromium and 5% aluminum at a temperature of 12500 C with the addition of 0.05% thorium to 2.5 times, with the addition of 0,
1% thorium was increased to 3.5 times and with the addition of 0.5% thorium to 7 times.
Another significant advantage is the small change in resistance. So showed an electric resistance wire. of an iron-chromium-aluminum alloy of the above-mentioned composition, when heated to 12500, within its service life of about 5 hours, a resistance increased by about 60 0% compared to its resistance at the beginning of the load.
An alloy of the same composition with a 1% thorium content, on the other hand, after 56 hours of heating to 1250 0, a resistance increase of only 27 0%.
