Airlock. The invention relates to a fermentation bung for containers of fermented liquids, and serves the purpose of granting air inlet in the container loading only after passing cleaning agents. It is known that many liquids in the fermentation industry lose their content and taste precisely because uncleaned cellar air penetrates and fermentation of the sweet liquid takes place. However, air has to penetrate when tapping, which is why this air must first be cleaned.
In the present subject matter of the invention, the incoming air is cleaned once by a germ-killing liquid and the other time by a cotton ball. The air is cleaned in two ways, so that only completely sterile air can get into the inside of the barrel.
An example embodiment of the subject matter of the invention is shown in section in the drawing. In the bung A there is an inlet pipe C, which is provided with a hollow body (pipe) B that is widened near the upper edge. The wall of this hollow body B is firmly connected to the pipe C directly above the bung A. Over the inner tube C, a tube D, which is narrower than that of tube B and is closed at the top in a spherical shape, is placed from above. In this spherical extension G there is cotton wool.
In order not to hinder the air circulation, this cotton ball in the extension G must not be used like a ball, but only lightly like fluff. Indentations Ir are also pressed into the tube D at the lower end in order to prevent the tube D from sitting uninterruptedly on the bottom of the hollow body B and thus allow the air to circulate.
The mode of action is as follows: The air penetrates between pipe D and hollow body B and passes through a solution of 10% metabisulfite in the lower part of pipe B into the space between pipe C and pipe D. The air rises here and comes in the spherical chamber G, after passing through the cotton wool which is soaked with sulfur vapors, into the central tube C and only from here into the barrel. The air must therefore pass through the liquid and the cotton wool in the extension G. to get into the barrel, and on the way has completely cleaned and made sterile.
As gases develop in the barrel during fermentation and cause pressure from the inside to the outside, an upward scale is attached to the outside of the hollow body B away from the level of the liquid, on which the strength of the fermentation beginning inside the barrel is exactly constant can animals.
In order to achieve a seal on the barrel, a cork E is attached to the lower end of the tube C, which is expediently impregnated with barrel tallow or wax. On the side of the cork E there is also a basket F interspersed with holes at the side, in order to prevent the tube C from being clogged and to prevent solid foreign bodies from falling through into the inside of the barrel.
