Abstract
A portable lounging backrest characterized by the capability to sit up or lay back in an array of lounging positions without the transport of a bulky heavy lawn/patio chair. In using this invention you may achieve a feet up position like you are using an ottoman or a lounge chair by using the ground beneath you. And it also allows for comfort adjustments rather than just sitting up straight in one position like a conventional lawn chair.
Description
Portable Lounging Backrest Background of the Invention 1. Field of the invention 2.
This invention relates to leisure furniture. Manually operated, padded and adjustable backrest for lounging at the park, beach or wherever the user wishes.
It is common for lawn, garden and recreational furniture to be bulky, ugly and non-compact with only one position for sitting. Chairs of this sort are impractical for transport because they use up too much space and are heavy. They are often made of bent tube steel but that is not their only downfall.
I have found that these disadvantages may be overcome by using the ground beneath your feet as your seat to lessen the size and mass of your lounger chair. Using this invention, you may put your feet up and have a comfortable backrest at the same time. You also have the flexiblility of adjusting many angles to suit your comfort needs.
In the drawings that illustrate embodiments of the invention, figure 1 is 3-D
front view of the embodiment. Figure 2 is a s-D back view. Figure 3 is the invention fully collapsed for transport. Figure 4 is the invention in some of its several angle-locking positions.
The backrest illustrated comprises of several components that are cross-braced and linked together mechanically to form an adjustable wedge shape or triangle. It also resembles an "A" frame.
The longest side of the triangle will be the backrest area that comprises of canvas fabric held and stretched across with padding sewed in as a headrest. The padded fabric will be reinforced with sewn in plastic which will act as a shoulder for the locking rail which is screwed into the main side rail from on top. On one side of this fabric will be a handle built in to carry the apparatus much like a briefcase. The fabric will also fold out to form a padded seat area. This seat flap is to be secured with a fastener to make it compact for transport. Behind the head will be a zippered pouch flap for small personal belongings.
The side of the triangle directly behind the seat or the middle part of the letter "A'' will act as the prop which holds up the weight of the user and locks into the rail base side as shown.
The base side is at ground level and is notched to lock the prop at several locations.

Research In searching the Canada patents database using the words beach chair, lounge chair and lawn chair, the only patent which slightly resembled my invention is patent #437524 However, their use of geometry is quite different than my invention and the locking mechanism is completely different. As well, the archive patent #437524 has no angular adjustment. I believe my design to be more structurally sound and technically superior.

Claims (4)
1. A manually operable seat/backrest with angular adjustability for comfort and convenience of easy transportability by way of collapsible and foldable sections.
2. A manually operable seat and backrest in the shape of an adustable angle wedge triangle or "A" frame. Reinforced fabric held, stretched across and folded down will act as the seat and backrest. As well, there will be a handle for carrying and a pouch behind the head for small personal belongings.
3. Using this invention proves unnecessary the propping up of your head, neck, shoulders and back with your elbows causing them to get sore. When going to the beach as a good example, often it may be uncomfortable sitting up against a log or using something else as a pillow. You also may not get much of a view while laying down facing the sky. Also, the adjustable backrest positions allow you to face the sun at the desired angles and use the ground beneath you as a footrest instead of carrying the extra weight of chair legs.
4. The apparatus folds, is collapsable and fastens together in a compact rectangular unit.
