Abstract
A method for monitoring and maintaining the supply of publications in a display, using an optical depth measuring device in conjunction with a control device which has been preprogrammed with data relating to the specific publications and which can transmit a signal indicating that the publications in the display are running low and need to be restocked.
Description
BACKGROUND AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION:
The invention relates to a method for monitoring and maintaining in a display a stack of publications for consumers to take. The method uses a known device for measuring depth as described in US Patent No. 4,968,146 entitled "OPTICAL
DEPTH
MEASURING DEVICE TO BE MOUNTED ON DRILLING POWER TOOL." That device uses an optical projector and receiver in conjunction with a signal processor to determine the depth of a drilled bore. The present invention will put this know technology to a new use.
The object of the present invention is to enable the persons responsible for maintaining in a display a supply of flyers, brochures, pamphlets or other publications to know when the supply is running low without physically checking the display. A
known optical depth measuring device will be placed above a stack of publications and connected to a control device. The control device will monitor the information from the optical depth measuring device and, when appropriate, send a signal indicating that the supply needs refreshing.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION:
The method employs a known optical depth measuring device which is electronically connected to a control device. The depth measuring device is place above the stack of publications to be monitored. The control device is also connected to a signaling device that can transmit a notification signal to a remote location, preferably by wireless means.
The control device will be programmed with a user selected refill level and monitoring frequency. Once activated, the control device will periodically cause the depth measuring device to determine the level of the stack of publications and return the results to the control device.
When the control device receives feedback from the depth measuring device it will compare the feedback to the user selected refill level. If the level indicated by the feedback is not greater than the feedback level, the control device will cause the signaling device to send a notification signal to a remote location, indicating to the persons responsible for maintaining the supply of publications that it is time to restock the publications.
