Description

TITLE OF THE INVENTION:
Coverall Garment NAMES) OF INVENTOR(S):
Dorothy June Miller FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a coverall garment, also known as coveralls.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
A coverall, also referred to as coveralls, is a full length protective outer garment. A workwear version of coverall is commonly used by workmen to protect their clothing from becoming soiled. A winterwear version of coverall is commonly used for winter activities such as skating, skiing and snowmobiling.
A coverall has a torso engaging portion, a pair of depending cylindrical pant legs, a pair of arm openings and an opening in the torso engaging portion which permits access to the pant legs and arm openings. In order to put on a coverall, one must first insert one's legs into the pant legs and then insert one's arms into the arm openings. The order cannot be reversed. Once the coverall is positioned on one's body the opening in the torso engaging portion is closed with fasteners .
There are a variety of fasteners which are used, such as snaps, buttons, or zippers.
Whether used for workwear or winterwear, coveralls have some minor problems associated with them. When used as workwear, the workman must take off his shoes to put on the coveralls. This creates a problem when there is no clean surface upon which to stand while putting the coveralls on.
When used as winterwear, the wearer must remove the arms from the arm openings in order to be able to lower the bottom half of the coveralls. This creates a problem when the wearer is faced with an unavoidable need to defecate outdoors.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
What is required is an alternative configuration of coveralls.
According to the present invention there is provided a coverall garment which includes a fabric body having a torso engaging portion and a skirt portion that depends from the torso engaging portion. The skirt portion is divided into a first leg engaging portion, a second leg engaging portion and a crotch covering portion positioned between the first leg engaging portion and the second leg engaging portion. The first leg engaging portion has a remote edge, an outside edge and an inside edge. The second leg engaging portion having a remote edge, an outside edge and an inside edge. The crotch portion has a remote edge, a first side edge and a second side edge . When the crotch covering portion is in a crotch covering position, the first side edge of the crotch covering portion is an extension of the inside edge of the first leg engaging portion and the second side edge of the crotch covering portion is an extension of the inside edge of the second leg engaging portion. A first fastener is positioned along the outside edge of the first leg engaging portion. A second fastener is positioned along the inside edge of the first leg engaging portion and the first side edge of the crotch covering portion.
The second fastener engages the first fastener thereby securing the first leg engaging portion to a leg. A third fastener is positioned along the outside edge of the second leg engaging portion. A fourth fastener is positioned along the inside edge of the second leg engaging portion and the second side edge of the crotch covering portion. The fourth fastener engages the third fastener thereby securing the second leg engaging portion to a leg.
The coverall garment, as described above, is placed on the body with the skirt portion suspended from the torso engaging portion. The wearer covers his or her legs by wrapping the leg portions around the legs and engaging the fasteners. This enables the coverall garment to be put on without one having to remove one's footwear. It also enables the lower portion of ones body to be exposed for the purpose of defecating without having to remove the torso engaging portion of the coverall garment.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
These and other features of the invention will become more apparent from the following description in which reference is made to the appended drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevation view of a coverall garment fabricated in accordance with the teachings of the present invention with skirt portion opened out.
FIGURE 2 is a front elevation view of the coverall garment illustrated in FIGURE 1, with crotch covering portion in a crotch covering position.
FIGURE 3 is front elevation view of the coverall garment illustrated in FIGURE 1, with leg engaging portions fastened and torso opening opened.
FIGURE 4 is front elevation view of the coverall garment illustrated in FIGURE 1, with leg engaging portions fastened and torso opening closed.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
The preferred embodiment, a coverall garment generally identified by reference numeral 10, will now be described with reference to FIGURES 1 through 4.
Referring to FIGURES 1 through 4, coverall garment 10 comprises a fabric body 12 having an inside surface 14, indicated by partial shading, and an outside surface 16, indicated by an absence of shading. Fabric body 12 has a torso engaging portion 18 and a skirt portion 20 that depends from torso engaging portion 18. In this particular embodiment, torso engaging portion 18 is in the form of a jacket 22.
Referring to FIGURE 1, jacket 22 has arm openings 24 with attached sleeves 26. Jacket 22 has a first edge 28 and a second edge 30 defining a torso opening 32. Skirt portion 20 is divided into a first leg engaging portion 34, a second leg engaging portion 36 and a crotch covering portion 38 positioned between first leg engaging portion 34 and second leg engaging portion 36. First leg engaging portion 34 has a remote edge 40, an outside edge 42 and an inside edge 44. Second leg engaging portion 36 has a remote edge 46, an outside edge 48 and an inside edge 50. Crotch covering portion 38 has a remote edge 52, a first side edge 54 and a second side edge 56.
Referring to FIGURE 2, when the crotch covering portion 38 is in a crotch covering position, first side edge 54 of crotch covering portion 38 is an extension of inside edge 44 of first leg engaging portion 34 and second side edge 56 of crotch covering portion 38 is an extension of inside edge 50 of second leg engaging portion 36.
A first interlocking zip fastener 60 is positioned along outside edge 42 of first leg engaging portion 34. A second interlocking zip fastener 62 is positioned along inside edge 44 of first leg engaging portion 34 and first side edge 54 of crotch covering portion 38. Referring to FIGURE 3, second interlocking fastener 62 interlocks with first interlocking fastener 60 thereby securing first leg engaging portion 34 in a tubular configuration necessary to accommodate one of the wearer's legs. Referring again to FIGURE 2, a third interlocking zip fastener 64 is positioned along outside edge 48 of second leg engaging portion 36. A fourth interlocking zip fastener 66 is positioned along inside edge 50 of second leg engaging portion 36 and second side edge 56 of crotch covering portion 38. Referring again to FIGURE 3, fourth interlocking fastener 66 interlocks with third interlocking fastener 64 thereby securing second leg engaging portion 36 in a tubular configuration necessary to accommodate another of the wearer's legs.
A fifth interlocking zip fastener 68 is positioned along first edge 28 of jacket 22. A sixth interlocking zip fastener 5 70 is positioned along second edge 30 of jacket 22. Referring to FIGURE 4, sixth fastener 70 interlocks with fifth fastener 68 to close torso opening 32, illustrated in FIGURE 3.
It is preferred that first interlocking zip fastener 60 and second interlocking zip fastener 62 when interlocked as illustrated in FIGURE 3 are positioned along the inside of one of the wearer' s legs and third interlocking zip fastener 64 and fourth interlocking zip fastener 66 when interlocked are positioned along the inside of another of the wearer's legs.
Each of first leg engaging portion 34 and second leg engaging portion 36 have knee portions 37 adapted to receive a person's knee. When the positioning of the zip fasteners are described as being along the inside of the wearer's leg, it will be understood that the zip fasteners are positioned to the inside of the knee portion 37, in order to avoid injury to the wearer when kneeling. It is also preferred that the zip fasteners be capable of zipping from either of their remote ends. This allows the wearer access from either the top of the leg or the bottom of the leg. Access from the top of the leg may be important in order to get keys from pant worn under the coverall garment. Access from the bottom of the leg may be important when the wearer is putting on or taking off his or her boots. Referring to FIGURE 3, it has been found that air can pass between remote edge 52 of crotch covering portion 38 and jacket 22. It is, therefore, preferred that mating tape fasteners 53 be positioned on remote edge 52 and jacket 22.
It will be apparent to one skilled in the art that modifications may be made to the illustrated embodiment without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined in the Claims.
