Abstract

The game of Blackjack or "Twenty-One" is enhanced by a method of providing a player with the option of wagering on whether the player or the dealer will have a hand total of eleven or twenty-one when a card is received. As well, the player can have the option of wagering on whether the player or the dealer will receive a card with the value of ten.

Description

METHOD FOR BLACKJACK SIDE BET WAGERING
Background of the Invention Blackjack or "Twenty-One" is a popular card game of chance which is played in gaming establishments throughout the world. In a typical Blackjack game, each player places his initial wager, also known as his "ante", before any cards are dealt. The wager can be any amount, at a player's discretion, between the minimum and maximum limits set by the rules of the gaming establishment. Each player is then dealt two cards, both of which are face up, or one face down and one is face up.
Each player, in turn, then takes as. many "hits" (additional cards) as he elects until the player either "stands" (stops with hand count less than or equal to twenty-one) or "busts"
(hand count exceeds twenty-one). Each player may stand with any hand count of twenty-one or less. If a player busts, he loses his wager, regardless of whether or not the dealer busts.
After each of the players, in turn, has taken as many hits as one elects and has stood on their hand or busted, the dealer then turns over their face down card and then either stands with the hand or takes hits in accordance with the house rules. Commonly, the house rules require that the dealer stand on their hand if the dealer has a hand count of seventeen or more, and require that the dealer take hits, if the dealer's initial hand count is sixteen or less, until they attain a hand count of seventeen or more. After obtaining a hand count of seventeen or more, the dealer is typically not allowed to take additional hits, unless one of the cards is an ace.
Usually, the house rules require that the dealer take a hit if their initial hand is an ace and a six ("soft"
seventeen), or if, after receiving one or more hits, the dealer's hand consists of an ace and two or more cards that add up to a card count of six. Also under normal house rules, the dealer is required to stand if their initial hand is a soft eighteen, soft nineteen, or soft twenty, and the ace is then counted with a card count of eleven. If the dealer busts, each player who has not busted wins. If the dealer does not bust, then the hand count for each player is compared with the hand count of the dealer. If the hand count of a player exceeds that of the dealer, the player wins. The normal payment is 1:1. If the hand count of the dealer exceeds that of the player, the player loses. If the player's hand total ties with the dealer's hand count, it is called a "push" and under normal house rules may provide that the player loses the wager or that the player's wager is returned to the player.
There are other methods of play that are commonly available with many casinos. These methods are called "insurance", "doubling down", and "splitting pairs".
After each player and the dealer receives their first two cards, if the dealer's "up" card is an ace, each player may elect to make an "insurance" bet. The amount of the insurance bet, for each player making the election, is most often one-half of the amount of the original ante. Then the dealer, without turning over their face down card, checks the face down card, and if the dealer has a Blackjack (a two card, twenty-one count hand) , the dealer then turns over the face down card.
Each player placing an insurance bet wins and is paid 2:2 for the insurance bet only. All players who do not also have a two card, twenty-one count hand (a Blackjack), lose their original ante regardless of their insurance bet. Each player also having a two-card twenty-one count hand has their ante returned to them or loses the ante, depending on the house rules.
Another method of play is called "doubling down".
The initial two card, hand counts total will permit a player to elect to "double-down". The most common double-down hand counts are usually nine, ten, and eleven, depending on house rules. If the player has an initial two card hand count total equal to one of the values established by the house rules, the player may elect to double down. The player informs the dealer of their choice to double down and places an additional wager up to the amount of his original bet. The dealer then deals to that player one and only one additional card, face up or face down, and the resulting three card hand establishes the final count for that player's hand. The player's three card hand count is compared with the dealer's final hand count and the amount of the player's bet is the total of the original ante and the double down.
Another method of play is called "splitting pairs".
If the first two cards of a player's hand are a pair or are both cards with a value of ten, that player may elect to "split" the initial two cards into two separate hands. The player then applies their original ante to one of the two hands and places an additional bet for the other hand. Both of the original two cards are then split and the player plays each of two hands as a separate hand in accordance to the house rules.
While previous versions of Blackjack have permitted players to make additional wagers after at least some cards have been displayed, it is desirable to increase the player's interest in a game by permitting additional opportunities for side-bets even before any cards have been displayed.
U.S. Patent No. 5,743,532 only gives players an opportunity to place a side bet if the dealer's revealed hand has a value of ten and the player is awarded the predetermined amount when the dealer's face down card has a value of eleven (i.e. an ace). The embodiment of the present invention allows the player to bet the next card can be a face card or a card that makes a hand total equal to eleven or twenty-one. Thus, the dealer, with any card showing and the embodiment of the present invention, will allow the player to place side-bets.
U.S. Patent No. 5,836,586 is the method of the steps of determining the score of the dealer to the predetermined number of dealer outcomes bet by the player. The embodiments of the present invention allow to side-bet on the dealer if they receive 11 or 21, and allow the players to side-bet on their own hands. As well, there is no need to modify the gaming table of Blackjack due to the simplicity of the embodiments of the present invention.
U.S. Patent No. 5, 816, 575 only bets on cards with specific suits that obtain a total of twenty-one.
It would be desirable for the player to bet on individual cards such as cards with the value of ten since there are many cards in a deck with this value.
It would be desirable for the player to bet on their own individual hands to obtain a hand total of eleven or twenty-one, since these totals are considered potentially solid hands (eleven) or solid hands (twenty-one).
It would be desirable for the player to bet on the dealer' s cards since the dealer may bust, and the bust card could be a card with the value of ten. Or, if the dealer has a potentially solid hand (eleven), the player can bet that the dealer will receive a card with the value of ten, thus defending the player's original ante.

It would be desirable for the player to bet on the dealer's cards since the dealer may be receiving lots of potentially solid hands (eleven) or solid hands (twenty-ones).
Thus the player can profit with the side-bets even though the original ante may be lost.
These, and other advantages are provided by the various embodiments of the present invention which are described herein.
Summary of the Invention The game of Blackjack or "Twenty-One" is enhanced by a method of providing a player with the option of wagering on whether the player or the dealer will have a hand total of eleven or twenty-one when a card is received. As well, the player can have the option of wagering on whether the player or the dealer will receive a card with the value of ten.
In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention there is provided a method of playing a card game comprising the steps of: providing a deck of cards comprising a plurality of different numerical values; providing at least one player with the opportunity to place a wager on whether the next card dealt to a player or a dealer will have the value of ten; resolving the wager by providing a winning payment to a player who placed a winning wager.
In accordance with another embodiment of the present invention there is provided an improved method of playing a Blackjack game or "Twenty-One" game comprising providing a deck of cards comprising a plurality of different numerical values, the improvement comprising providing at least one player with the opportunity to place a single wager on whether the next card dealt to a player or a dealer will have the value of ten.
In accordance with a further embodiment of the present invention there is provided an improved method of playing a Blackjack game or "Twenty-One" game comprising providing a deck of cards comprising a plurality of different numerical values, the improvement comprising the step of providing at least one player with the opportunity to place a single wager on whether the next card dealt to a player's hand, or a dealer's hand, will make a cumulative value of the designated hand equal to eleven or twenty-one.
The cards may be displayed on a game board, electronic screen or any similar medium.
These and other embodiments of the present invention are described in further detail below.
Detailed Description The various embodiments of the present invention provide novel betting options to the game of Blackjack, or "Twenty-One". According to the various embodiments of the present invention, each player is provided with an opportunity to make at least one wager (or side-bet) on whether the next card dealt to the player of the dealer will be a card with the value of ten or the next card dealt to the designated hand will have a numerical total of the hand equal to eleven or twenty-one.
The combination of the various embodiments of the present invention can be applied to any Blackjack or "Twenty-One" game without any particular layout or device. As well, the game of Blackjack or "Twenty-One" can be played normally with the added embodiments of the present invention.
When players have placed their desired wagers for Blackjack or "Twenty-One" play, they will have the opportunity to bet on any card the player or the dealer will receive. If they wish, they can place a side-bet to receive either a card with the value of ten or a card that will make their hand total of eleven or twenty. If the hand consists of only one card the only card that can make a hand total equal to eleven is an Ace card .
If the player placed a side-bet for a card with the value of ten, and receives a card with the value of ten, then the player wins and receives a payment determined by the institution, usually a licensed casino (the "House"), that is providing the game of Blackjack with predetermined rules and regulations of play (House rules). If the player placed a side-bet and the card does not have the value of ten, then the player loses the side-bet.
If the player places a side-bet for a card that will make a player's or dealer's total hand equal to eleven or twenty, and the player or dealer receives a card that makes their total hand equal to eleven or twenty-one, then the player wins and receives a payment determined by the House rules. If the player placed a side-bet and the card does not make their total hand equal to eleven or twenty-one, then the player loses the side-bet.
Each player can have the opportunity of using the various embodiments of the present invention to bet on every card that is dealt from the deck, including cards dealt to the dealer.

If the player places a side-bet for either the player or the dealer to receive a card that will make their hand total be eleven or twenty-one, and the current value of their hand is equal to a total of eleven, the only card that will make their hand total equal to twenty-one and win the side bet of totaling eleven or twenty-one is the card with the numerical image of 10 (a natural ten). The other face cards.with images of J, Q, K, or any image that represents face cards, although have a value of ten, does not constitute a real 10 card image.
This exception prevents the player from taking advantage of the House since the odds to the player may be a disadvantage to the House. Since the value of Ace can be one or eleven, a player that received a hand total that equals eleven and twenty-one, and then placed a side-bet for a total of eleven or twenty-one, will not receive two payments for having both eleven and twenty-one hand total. The player will receive only the payoff of having either a total hand of eleven or twenty-one, not both. But, as an alternative embodiment of the present invention dictated in the previous sentence, the House may choose to pay the player for receiving both eleven and twenty-one hand totals. Yet the logical method of paying the player is to pay half of what the player would normally receive for having eleven and twenty-one. Thus the total payment would be equal.for both cases of eleven or twenty-one totals, and eleven and twenty-one totals. This flexibility can be determined by the House rules.
The House could modify the Blackjack or "Twenty-One"
table surface to recognize the side-betting apparatus using the embodiments of the present invention. Yet the House may not need to modify the table surface and use the current table markings to represent the side-betting apparatus using the embodiments of the present invention. If the player wants to place a side-bet to receive a card with the value of ten on one of their hands, then the side-bet can be placed on the Insurance line beside the recipient hand where the next card will be placed. If the player wants to place a side-bet where the~next card with the value of ten, and that card would be for the dealer' s hand, the player can place the side-bet on the Insurance line. If the player places a side-bet to receive a card that will make their total hand equal to eleven or twenty-one, they can place the side-bet either in front of the Insurance line or on top of the hand where the next card will be dealt upon. If the player want to place a side-bet where the next card that will make the dealer's total hand equal to eleven or twenty, they can place the side-bet either in front or behind the Insurance line or on top of one of the player's hands. If the House rules permit, the House can also accept communicative requests from the players on which betting apparatus they want using the embodiments of the present invention.
Having now described the invention, in its preferred form, it will be readily apparent and understood that various modifications and alterations can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
