Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to an automotive type utility trailer which main features are. The ease of operation when backing off (reverse) with the car; and ease of dumping, when you want to load or unload a recreational vehicule or any other thing.
Everybody who used a trailer as had problems when backing off in an awkward place, and a lot of people do not use trailers because it is hard to manoeuvre.
With the trailer, backing off is not more difficult than when you back off with the car only, since there is no pivoting point between the car and the trailer, the trailer only moves up and down to absorb the bumps in the terrain.
With the increasing popularity of all kinds of recreational vehicule, there is a good market for small trailers made for that special application.
Brief summary of the invention The two main feature of the trailer are the double pole system and the 2 swivel wheels.
The double pole keeps the trailer in alignment with the car at every moment, while going forward or backward. The swivel wheel that are offset from there pivoting point take a rear position when going forward and pivot in the curves; and when you back off, the wheels automatically pivot and take a forward position (see figure 2) that will prepare the trailer for it's dumping position.
When the wheels are in the forward position, it take a lot of weight off the front of the trailer and helps the unloading of the vehicule on the trailer. It also reduces the angle of the plateform while unloading. In fact, the weels have to be in the forward position for the plateform to swivel and unload. To get the weels in that position you have to back off for a couple of feet starting with a little look to help the pivoting of the trailer wheels.
One more advantage of the trailer is it's reduced lenght, since there is no pivoting point between the car and the trailer like ordinary one pole trailers.
P.l Brief description of the drawings Figure 1 View from the top of the trailer, the two poles and the bumper of the towing car or truck.
Figure 2 Side view of the trailer with the two position of the pivoting wheels and the dumping position (shown in doted line) Figure 3 Side view in it's dumping position. And the forward position of the wheels.
Figure 4 View from the bottom of the trailer with the pivoting wheels position.
Figure 5 Side view of the wheel system Figure 6 Rear view of the wheel system Figure 7 Bottom view of the wheel system Figure 8 Front view of the wheel system Figure 9, 70 and 77 Exploded view of the wheel system.
Description of the preferved embodiments ~ Figure 1 Shows a top view of the trailer (96) and the bumper of the towing car or truck (95). The two attaching point on the car (97) are welded on the transverse bar (hitch) that is fixed under the car.
The extention tube beam (99) goes in the tube (97) and is fixed with a pin (98) and a counterpin. The part (100) is a standard trailer ball, part (101) is a standard trailer hand that goes in part (100).
A trailer jack (102) with a wheel at it's bottom end is fixed in the middle of the trailer.
Part (103) is a plate to hold the jack. The pole (104) of the trailer can be very short, since there is no pivot point. In the front area of the trailer, a frame (105) is installed to give streight to the plateform and give attaching point for the cargo.
~ Figure 2 Gives a side view of the trailer. An important point as to be explained here;
the attaching points on the car have to be positionned so the plate form of the trailer is horizontal or slightly going down toward the car (the front end of the trailer can be arround 5 cm lower than the rear end).
P.2 ~~'~; .

Part (101) is a standard trailer hand. Part (102) is a jack with wheel, plate (103) is welded to the trailer and holds the jack in position. The jack can be stored in an horizontal position when not needed. Part (104) are the 2 trailer poles. A
frame (105) is installed in the front of the plate form to give streight to the trailer. A plate (106) and a frame made of tube beam forms the plate form of the trailer. Part (1 ) is a steel plate welded to the frame wich fonction is to hold the wheel assembly.
Bottom plate (2) holds the bracket (5) and the anchoring point for the suspension (7). Bolt (6) holds the 2 suspension arms (10) to the backet, a wheel axle (16) holds the wheel between the two suspension arms(10). A floor bumper (114) is placed at the rear end of the trailer to protect when in dumping position.
Figure 3 show a side view of the trailer in it's dumping position. We can see here that when the wheels are in the forward position (after backing off) a lot of the cargo weight is transfered over the pivoting point; this results in a very easy unloading of the cargo.
Part (97) is a tube beam welded to the hitch of the car or truck, tube beam (99) goes into the fixed part (97). Part (102) is a lifting jack, part (103) is the plate that holds the jack.
The 2 poles (104) are attached to the plate form and have a pivot at their end.
Bottom plate (2) pivots around pivot (13) to let the wheels go back when going forward with the car. Bracket (5) holds the two suspension arms (10) with the bolt (6). Suspension of the trailer is made of a coil spring (9) held by part (7) and plate (4) that fonction is to adjust the tensioon of the coil spring with the nut (14) and the rod (13).
Part (15) is the suspension cage. The wheel hub (17) is held by a wheel axle (16).
A shock absorber (20) is added in combination to the coil spring to give more stability to the trailer. Part (19) is the holding bracket for the shock absorber (20).
~ Figure 4 shows a bottom view of the trailer. Notice the position of the swivel wheels toward the rear end of the trailer in a way that when the wheels are in the front position, the center of gravity of the trailer is slightly forward of the center of the wheels; that gives good stability to the trailer when not coupled to a tow car and ease to lower the plate form when you want to load something.
The plate form is framed with tube beams (106) to give it some strenght. The 2 poles are inserted between tube beams and have a pivoting point, at bolt (12) and nut (113) the poles are secured to the plate form by bolt (108) when carrying a load.
Part (114) are two small bumper that protect the lights of the trailer and the frame when you are unloading something.
The swilvel system formed of parts 1 to 15 will be explained at the next figures.
P.3 ~ Figure 5, 6, 7, and 8 show the swilvel wheel and suspension system from 4 different view points.
Plate (1) is the superior plate welded to the plate form, the bottom plate (2) hold the wheel and suspension and pivots around bolt (11) and nut (12). A bearing (3) is placed between the plates (1 ) and (2) to facilitate the pivoting action.
The adjustement of the tension of the suspension is made by the plate (4), the rod (13) and the nut (14).
The suspension arms (10) are held in place by the bracket (5) that is solidified by plates (5A) and welded to plate (2).
The coil spring (9) is held in place on the sleeve (7) with a bolt (8), the sleeve (7) is welded on plate (2). The other end of the spring is fixed to the plate (15) and held by the backet (25A) and bolt (21 ) and nuts (25).
The wheel is held between two plates (10) by the axle (16) which holds the hub (17) The shock absorber (19) is held in place by bracket (19).
~ Figure 9, 10 and 11 show all seperate parts of the swivel wheel system and suspension.
Superior plate (1), inferior plate (2) bearing (3), cone (3A), tensionning plate (4), backet (5), bolt (6), sleeve (7), coil spring (9), suspension arm (10), bolt (11 ), nut (12), rod (13, nuts (14), carrier plate (15), forward plate of the carrier (15A), axle (16), hub (17), axle nut (18), backet (19), shock absorber (20), bolt (21), plate (22), strenghtening plate (23), nut (24, 25), bushing (26), seal (27), bearing (28), cone (29), bushing (30), braket (25A), strenghtening plate (31, 32).
The invention is not limited to the embodiments described and represented hevein before and various modifications can be made there to without passing bevouc~
