Description

~ CA 022~9874 1999-01-22 The invention relates to a road protection device located on at least one of the edges of a traffic lane, as well as to a method of obtaining such a protection device.
It is known to ensure the safety of the users of a traffic lane by safety barriers provided on either side of the road or on the side edges of a highway beyond the shoulder and on the central traffic divider. Similarly, safety barriers can be arranged to restrict traffic lanes and, thus, to protect pedestrians or buildings, notably building corners, on airports, parking lots or similar places.
The safety barriers can be made of metal elements or made of concrete.
o Placing such safety barriers calls for, generally, prior installation of vertical posts designed for making up supports for the said safety barriers.
Moreover, it is known to construct such safety barriers out of extruded concrete, cast on-site, by a slip form paver.
Besides, it is often necessary to protect the people living close to traffic lS lanes against adverse effects such as noise or even vehicle headlamps and this, more especially when crossing residential areas.
The installation of such protection screens generally calls for the fastening of posts liable to accommodate protection panels. The said panels can be made of l-shaped profiles in the opposite hollow profiles of which two successive extremities of two consecutive panels have been nested.
Generally, the protection screens are placed relatively close to the edges of the traffic lanes, which implies that they must be protected by safety barriers.
Consequently, the installation of an assembly composed of a protection screen and of a safety barrier increases the number of the following operations:excavation, foundation casting, installation of posts and fastening, including boring the holes necess~ry to the various assemblies. Such a double installation is time-consuming and expensive, as regards materials as well as labour.
In this field, the document FR-2.508.511 is well known and describes a ' CA 022~9874 1999-01-22 device comprising an edge for a traffic lane, whereas the said device is designed for combining the function of a safety rail and that of a wall foundation. This device consists of a single piece footing composed of a section making up a safety separator and of a section making up the support of a noise protection screen. The screen is fixed on the support by a fastening plate. According to a known variation of this device, the support can be formed in order to delineate a plantation bed.
Moreover, the document FR-2.704.880 describes a road protection device comprising a lower section forming a concrete base making up a safety o barrier and an upper, noise insulating, section making up a noise protection wall. The noise protection wall is fastened to the base by a plate.
Whatever the qualities of these devices, they do not meet all the problems mentioned above.
The purpose of the invention is to remedy the shortcomings described above.
To this end, the invention should suggest a solution enabling simpler installation, which is faster and cheaper, of an assembly composed of a protection screen and of a safety barrier. Advantageously, the solution suggested by the invention must use the slip form paving technique.
The purpose of the invention is met by a road protection device arranged on at least one of the edges of a traffic lane. This protection device comprises a lower section making up a base, an upper section making up a protection screen and a side section forming a safety barrier. The upper sectionand the side section provide a free space in-between.
According to the invention, the device of the invention comprises in the lower section at least one recess in the form of a groove open upwards and extending more or less lengthwise to the lower section and designed for working together with the upper section in fastening the latter on the lower section. In order to constitute the free space between the upper section and theside section, the recess(es) is (are) located at a distance from the side section.

' CA 022~9874 1999-01-22 The side section forming a safety barrier can be made of juxtaposed, pre-mounted concrete modular elements or of metal elements or still, more advantageously, be cast on-site continuously.
The device of the invention according to which the lower section of the protection device is fitted with recesses designed for accommodating at least partially, elements of the upper section making up a protection screen, enables to do away with the usage of auxiliary fastening elements such as plates or stalked anchors.
According to various embodiments of the invention, the protection device o can exhibit one or several of the following characteristics, considered individually or with all their technically possible combinations:
- The lower section and the side section are formed individually, whereas the side section is anchored in the lower section.
- The lower section and the side section are formed as a single piece.
S - The lower section and the side section are produced using at least one slip form.
This arrangement relates to the individual execution as well as to the single-piece execution of the lower and side sections of the device of the invention. In the case of individual execution of the lower section and of the side section, both partial slip forms of the slip form paver and which correspond respectively to the lower section and to the side section of the device of the invention, can be placed beside one another or be offset in the progression direction of the paver according to the nature of the concrete used. The arrangement of the partial slip forms depends in this case also on the possible use of a means of separation designed for preventing the concrete making up the side section from mixing with the concrete making up the lower section.
In the case of execution of the lower and side sections as a single part, both partial slip forms can be arranged in order to provide a single slip form or they can be replaced with a single slip form.
- The lower section comprises a number of recesses open upwards and ' CA 022~9874 1999-01-22 spaced away from one another, lengthwise to the lower section.
This arrangement of the invention enables to confer different structures to the upper section and, thus, to the free space between the upper section and the side section, of the device of the invention. Besides, this arrangement enables to apply the invention to various types of protection screen while usingpanels without or with supporting posts and while arranging them with various tilting angles in relation to the vertical axis and with various orientation angles in relation to the longitudinal extension of the device of the invention.
- The lower section comprises a wide base with its own reinforcement, o on which the side section rests and is anchored.
According to this arrangement, the lower section serves as a base for the lower section and for the side section. An advantage of this arrangement is to enable the execution of the lower section and of the side section in a singleblock.
S The purpose of the invention is met by a method of obtaining a road protection device on at least one of the edges of a traffic lane, whereas the device comprises a lower section forming a base, an upper section making up a protection screen and a side section forming a safety barrier.
According to the invention, the method comprises the following stages or steps:
- application of a reinforcement for the execution of the armored concrete lower section, - execution of the lower section in continuous cast using a slip form paver, whereas the resulting lower section is fitted with at least one recess open upwards, - completion of the lower section with the side section, and - sealing the upper section in the recess(es) of the lower section.
The invention also relates to the characteristics below considered individually or according to all the technically possible combinations:
- The side section is produced by continuous cast using a slip form.

' CA 022~9874 1999-01-22 .

- The side section is produced with the iower section in a single pass of a slip form paver.
The execution of the side section with the lower section comprises several variations. According to the first variation, the side section and the lower section are made as a single block using a single slip form. According to the second variation, the side section and the lower section are executed distinctly by a double body slip form. According to the nature of the concrete used and according to the structures of the bodies composing the slip form, the concrete drop pipes in each slip form body or in both slip form bodies, are offset in relation to one another by a distance such that the concrete of the lower section is set sufficiently so that the concrete of the side section is not mixed, during the casting operation, with the concrete of the lower section.
According to the design of the slip form, a separator can be injected between both concrete sections.
S According to a third variation, the side and lower sections are made of a single block, but by a slip form comprising two partial forms, for this variation, in order to make up a single form.
- The formation of the recess or recesses, in the lower section during the continuous cast, can be obtained mainly in two ways. According to the first possibility, bodies of a light material or a material that can be disintegrated easily, such as blocks made of expanded polystyrene, are arranged and maintained by the reinforcement of the lower section as the slip form progresses or during the application of the reinforcement. According to another variation, the recess(es) are obtained using a corresponding mould, which is part of the slip form. In order to provide an oblong recess, this mould is advantageously integrated into the outline of the slip form, thanks to its shape.
To obtain a number of recesses, the mould is advantageously a mobile mould, such as a polyhedron designed for being plunged repeatedly into the reinforcement as the slip forms progresses.
In a manner similar to the formation of recesses for the fastening of the CA 022~9874 1999-01-22 protection screen in the lower section, other recesses can be provided in the lower section when the side section must be made of metal elements.
Besides, it is conceivable to build, during the same stage, the bottom of the free space according to criteria typical for the application chosen.
On top of being advantageously able to build the device of the invention while using a slip form, the invention allows to install the protection screen and, if possible, a side section made of metal elements, without any auxiliary element such as fastening plates, or stalked anchors. The invention makes the installation easier, notably the position adjustment of the posts and of the 10 panels making up the protection screen.
Another advantage of the invention consists in being able to provide the device of the invention while hugging the edge profile of the traffic lane or ofanother positioning line of the protection device, without having to measure anddetermine any digging or drilling points for fastening posts.
It is particularly interesting to be able to provide oblong recesses for obtaining protection screens out of panels without any posts.
The invention is also advantageous in case when the traffic lane implies the production of steps. In such applications, the lower section comprises a trapezoidal section.
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention can be deducted from various embodiments with reference to the drawings, on which:
Figure 1 shows a device according to the invention in a cross section according to a first embodiment.
Figure 2 shows a variation of the embodiment of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a portion of a device according to the invention provided with a number of recesses designed for accommodating posts.
Figure 4 shows a variation of the device of Figure 3.
Figure 5 shows a portion of a device according to the invention provided 30 with an oblong recess designed for accommodating the lower edge of a ' CA 022~9874 1999-01-22 protection panel.
Figure 6 shows another embodiment of the device according to the invention; and Figure 7 shows schematically the implementation of a device according to the invention with a slip form paver.
The device according to the invention represented on Figures 1 and 2 comprises a lower section 1 formed by a wide base 11 and a body 12, an upper section 2 making up a protection screen, as well as a side section 3 forming a safety barrier. The body 12 of the lower section 1 exhibits an upper surface 13 o in which recesses 4 open upwards are provided. The recesses 4 are designed for working together with the upper section 2 at the fastening point of the latter onto the lower section 1. To this end, the recesses 4 are formed in order to accommodate supporting posts 21 between which are held panels 22 forming the protection screen. The recesses 4 can also be formed in order to accommodate the lower edge of a panel 23 as represented on Figure 5. The different shapes of the recesses are represented on Figures 3 to 5 and referred as 41 and 42, as explained further.
The recesses 4 are arranged in the body 12 of the lower section 1 so that they are located at a distance from the side section and, simultaneously, from one another lengthwise to the lower section 1. Thanks to this arrangement, the upper section 2 and the side section 3 provide a free space 5 between them.
The free space 5 exhibits a sufficient width to enable, for instance, a person to walk along the protection screen 2 or to be filled at least partially with peat in order to grow plants therein.
The lower section 1 is advantageously made of concrete armored with a reinforcement 6. Figures 1 and 2 show an embodiment according to which the lower section 1 and the side section 3 are formed individually, whereas the sidesection 3 is anchored in the lower section 1 using rods 31. Figure 6 shows an 30 embodiment according to which the lower section 1 and the side section 3 are ' CA 022~9874 1999-01-22 formed of a single block. The reinforcement 6 consists, according to either embodiment or variation selected, of combinations of rods 61 or 62 arranged along the longitudinal portion of the lower section 1 and of the side section 3 and of carcass reinforcements 63 to 68 whose geometry and sizes are suited to s those of the corresponding section of the device according to the invention.
Thus, the device represented on Figure 1 comprises a number of rods 61 oriented along the longitudinal portion of the lower section 1 as well as twocarcass reinforcements 63 and 64 whose shapes are suited respectively to that of the wide base 11 and of the body 12. The carcasses 63 and 64 o interpenetrate each other and are fastened in relation to one another.
In the variation represented on Figure 2, the reinforcement of the lower section 1 comprises, beside a carcass reinforcement 63 for the wide base 11, carcass reinforcements 65 and 66 whose shapes and sizes are selected in order to reinforce the body 12 on two sections of its width while omitting a section of the body 12 where recesses 4 are provided. The reinforcements 65 and 66 are arranged more or less perpendicular to the carcass 63 and connected by pins 67. Whereas the reinforcement represented on Figure 1 is better suited to the execution of lower sections whose recesses are formed to accommodate the posts 21, the reinforcement represented on Figure 2 is rather suited to the execution of lower sections fitted with oblong recesses.
The device according to the invention is represented on Figures 1 and 2 with a side section 3 whose carcass is made of rods 62 arranged lengthwise to the side section 3. It goes without saying that this embodiment whose side section 3 corresponds to an armored-concrete rail (ACR) normally used as a road shoulder or on traffic dividers may comprise any type of reinforcement used to this day in the ACRs normally employed. Accordingly, the rods 31 represent schematically the different fastenings that can be used to fasten the ACRs in the ground or on the road shoulders or the ACRs of civil engineering works.
In the embodiment of the device according to the invention represented ' CA 022~9874 1999-01-22 on Figure 6, the carcass 6 comprises, besides the longitudinal rods 61 and 62 carcass reinforcements 63 and 64 corresponding to the embodiment on Figure 1 or carcass reinforcements 63, 65 and 66 corresponding to the embodiment on Figure 2, a carcass reinforcement 68. The carcass 68 is formed in order to match the shape of the lower section of the side section 3 which will be formed as a single piece with the lower side 1 and which is attached to the carcasses 63 and 64 at the same time.
Figures 3 and 5 shows various shapes and arrangements of the arrangements used by the invention. Thus, Figure 3 shows an arrangement o according to which the recesses referred to as 41 exhibit the shape of a parallelepipedon with a square cross section, whereas the said recesses are placed after one another lengthwise to the lower section 1. Each recess 41 is designed for accommodating a supporting post 21. The posts 21 can be fitted, at their lower ends, with a hooping 7. Each pair of neighboring posts accommodates a panel 22 and maintains it in a vertical position as represented on Figure 3 or in a slightly tilted position of an angle a in relation to the vertical axis as represented on Figures 1, 2 and 6. It goes without saying that the shape and the sizes of the recesses 41, and notably the shape of their transversal sections, depend on the sizes and on the shape of the posts to be installed. Thus, the transversal sections of the recesses 41 can be for instancesquare, rectangular or circular. Moreover, the recesses 41 can be aligned in relation to one another along a line, which is more or less parallel to an edge of the lower section 1. However, the recesses 41 can be arranged in two or several alignments according to the structure requested for the protection screen. Thus, the arrangement of the recessed 41 represented on Figure 3 corresponds to a continuous surface protection screen, whereas the arrangement of the recesses 41 represented on Figure 4 corresponds to a broken structure of the surface of the protection screen.
Figure 5 shows an embodiment according to which the lower section 1 is 30 fitted with a single oblong recess 42, in the form of a groove and extending - CA 022~9874 1999-01-22 more or less lengthwise to the lower section 1. This type of recess is selected advantageously for applications where panels 23 should preferably be inserted to build the protection screen, directly by their lower edge in the lower section 1 of the device of the invention. The protection screen thus provided may or may not comprise supporting posts.
The recesses 41 and 42 enable, thanks to the variation of their sizes and of their arrangement, of which Figures 3 to 5 only give a few examples, to install and to fasten panels forming a protection screen with various tilting angles a. Thus, the same protection screen may exhibit over a given distance, lO panels whose tilting angle changes periodically or aperiodically, regardless of the variation degree. Independently of the embodiment selected, the ability to fasten the panels forming the protection screen, without or with posts, without resorting to auxiliary elements such as fastening plates or stalked anchors, advantageously enables to place the panels and/or the posts in the recesses S formed and provided to this end as well as to tilt them and to orient them with respect to one another. Fixing with fluidised concrete, for instance with microconcrete, or with fluidised cement, only takes place once the panels are intheir final position. There is no need to correct any possible drilling that wasplaced wrongly. In the same way, the possibility of placing the panels first andto fasten them later, enables to maximise the arrangement of the panels according to the results expected, notably in the case of a sound protection screen.
In order to provide a protection device according to the invention, a slip form paver is advantageously used, comprising one or two partial forms, depending on whether the lower section and the side section should be executed individually or as a single part. In both cases, the reinforcement 6 isplaced first, as represented on Figure 7. When installing the carcass reinforcements, elements made of a light material such as polystyrene blocks, are also installed in places corresponding to the recesses of the lower section to be provided. These elements can be withdrawn during a particular stage of '- CA 022~9874 1999-01-22 the execution of the protection device according to the invention or as the installation of the posts or panels forming the elements of the protection screen progresses. However, it is also conceivable that the slip form paver comprises mobile elements, resistant to the various characteristics of the concrete, such as humidity, or which have been made resistant to the said characteristics.
Such mobile elements would then be inserted repeatedly at the places provided for the recesses formed, in the carcass as the slip form paver progresses and they would be withdrawn from the lower section thus built by the slip form paveras the latter progresses.
According to a variation, such mobile elements could be inserted by the slip form paver into a section of freshly cast concrete which has not set yet, as if it were a piston, thus expelling a corresponding portion of the concrete.
In the case of an embodiment of a single oblong recess, forming a groove along the whole lower section of the device of the invention, the slip form can be built in its upper section in an appropriate manner.
Regardless of the embodiment of the production device selected, i.e.
execution of the lower section and of the side section in two individual parts or as a single part, the method of the invention enables to construct the protection device according to the invention out of armored concrete with a single pass of a slip form paver.
The reference signs inserted after the technical characteristics mentioned in the claims solely aim at facilitating the understanding of the saidclaims and do not limit their extent in any way.
