Description

Canadian Patent Application under Rule 93 TITLE:
Coatings containing a Heterogieneous Blend of Rubber INVENTORS: Mr. Dennis Figiel 568 Lessard Dr.
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Mr. Bruce McFadden 11721 - 92"d St.
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Mr. Noel Winter 2735 Lindstrom Dr. S.W.
Calgary, AB

All of the inventors are Canadian Citizens.
Description of the Preferred Embodiments Generally, process and product is disclosed for the mixing of rubber plus other heterogeneous materials with silicone or acrylic paint.
More particularly, ~ synthetic or virgin rubber (and optionally silica sand and/or perilite/vermiculite); is added with ~ waterborne silicone resins, acetoxic silicone resins, neutral cure silicone resins, silicone resins of any nature blended with acrylic resin blends;
~ through a blending or mixing process; and ~ to produce a consistent paste suitable for application on concrete, concrete block, wood, drywall, plywood, plastic, steel and cementitious basecoats.
i The resultant coating product and/or insulation material is for use in but not limited to the building and construction industry, commercial, residential and industrial applications. The products are also used as a joint filler, caulking compound, patch compound, and chinking material.
The blended recipes provide a ready mix that after proper preparation of the surface that will receive the mix, the material can be applied through a troweled and/or spray and/or rolled and/or brushed onto the receiving surface. The material can be applied to achieve a variety of finished appearance ranging from a smooth finish to a rough California stucco appearance.
Rubber is introduced to the paint substrate, as described below:
1. Natural & Synthetic rubber compounds;
2. Material may be new or recycled;
3. Material is in granular form from minus five [-5 mesh (ansi)] to minus four hundred [ -400 mesh (ansi)];
4. Shape may be regular or irregular;
5. The purpose of the material is to provide one or more of the following:
~ A low cost filler that will surface bond to the silicone resins thus extending the coating coverage of the resins while making the overall recipe more cost competitive in the coating industry;
~ Elastic and elongation characteristics in the final recipe;
~ Shear capabilities in the final recipe;

~ Texture;
A coating material results that will self adhere to most construction related materials and provides both a finish coat or a base coat for the application of other products.
The rubber constituent, when introduced into the silicone or acrylic blends, are understood to behaves in the following advantageous manner 1. the silicone, acrylic and silicone/acrylic blends will adhere more strongly to the rubber that to sand particles. This is due to the higher water absorption rates of rubber when compared to sand. Sand absorption is substantially zero. Whereas sand is merely held in suspension and has a surface adhesion, the molecular structure of silicone has a higher absorption rate and is wicked into the rubber to create significant adhesion; and 2. with the rubber, having the higher water absorption rate, the adherence or bond between the resins and the rubber increases affecting an increase in i. product stability;
ii. elongation and elastic characteristics;
iii. shear capacity.
The recipes produce coatings that provide a ready mix material for the following applications:

~ Applied as part of a system over any leveling base coat either as the finish product or as a base material for an additional coating. The coating system as described could be applied on;
~ standard concrete block held together with mortar;
~ standard concrete block held together mechanically with no mortar;
~ wood or plywood;
~ concrete;
~ drywall;
~ cementitious basecoat;
~ other basecoat applications;
~ existing paint coatings after preparation;
~ plastic composites;
~ fibreglass;
~ metals;
~ As a specialized coating in the industrial marketplace and/or applications to specialized niche markets that require coatings;
~ Interior or exterior applications.

PRODUCT RECIPE:
General Notes:
1. In any of the formulae, Silicone/Acrylic Blends can range from 1 part silicone to 4 parts acrylic down to 4 part silicone to 1 part acrylic 2. All quantities identified are by weight;
3. The Rubber/Silica Sand/Perlite (Vermiculite) Blend can be any combination by weight of rubber to silica sand to perlite/vermiculite;
4. Rubber is added to our recipes to enhance elongation, stability, and provide a cheaper blend for marketing;
5. Sand or and solid particulate matter is added for trowleability, texture, durability and abrasion resistance;
6. Perlite is added to the recipes to enhance trowelability and provide texture;
7. Silicone/acrylic blends are used to decrease the mix cost;
8. Silicone provides the adhesion, elongation, durability, breathability, fungal resistance, mildew resistance; and
9. The preferred family of silicone resins include:
a. silicone waterborne elastomeric products which are tin-catalyzed and calcium carbonate filled, which meet the slump test as defined in test method CTM
0062.
