Abstract

A spectacle arrangement comprises a frame (1) having: legs (2); a top bar (3); a bottom bar (4) with a nose piece (5), and a lens arrangement (6). An air supply (7) is provided via a flexible tube (8). Air outlets (9, 10 and 11) are provided. In operation the air supply (7) provides a plurality of air streams across a user's eyes, nose and mouth. This creates an area of slightly higher pressure filtered air in front of the user's face. As this is pollen free the cause of allergic reaction is removed thus providing relief to a hay fever sufferer.

Description

~ W093/22702 213 4 7 6 ~ PCT/GB92/00810 1 ,"L~proYed Sp ~
~ .
3 This invention relates to improved spectacles 4 especially but not exclusively for use in alleviating the symptoms of hay-fever.

7 Hay fever is essentially an allergic reaction to plant -~
8 pollen which causes irritation to the eyes, nose, mouth 9 etc and f s a problem which affects large numbers of people in the summer months. Various solutions have 11 been proposed to overcome the problem or at least 12 relieve the symptoms and, depending on the severity of 13 the allergic reaction~ these are to a degree at least 14 effective. Generally, however treatment in~olves the use of some form of medicament and as such i5 not 16 always available or desirable.

18 A solution to he ~.rob.l.em is proposed in British Patent 13 No 1341395. In this arrangement a filtered air supply is provided to spectacle rrames and exits from holes 21 around the base of the frames adjacent to the users 22 eyes. While the preæence of filtered air may have some 23 beneficial effect this arrangement has the disadvantage 24 that the filtered air being blown out the base will have the effect of drawing un~iltered air around the 1, 213i7~j~
W093t22702 PCT/GB92/00810 -l top of the lens across the users eyes.

3 It is an object of the present invention to obviate or 4 mitigate the disadvantages of the known prior art.
? 5 6 According to the present invention there is provided a 7 spectacle arrang ment having air supply means arranged 8 thereon and provided with outlets for directing air 9 towards and across a users face so as to create an area of positive air pressure around the users eyes.

12 The air supply means may comprise an aîr tube attached 13 to the spec~acle frame or may be formed by a hollow 14 section of the frame itself.

16 Preferably the air outlets are arranged so as to direct ~ 17- air in several directions ~imultaneously.
: 1~
: 19 Preferably also an air pump or compressed air reservoir supply is provided for supplying the air supply means 21 and filter means are provided for the air supply.

23 The spactacle frame may carry plain lenses, 24 prescription lenses, sun lenses or may ~e a plain frame without lenses.

27 Embodiments of the present invention will now be - 28 descri~ed by way of example with reference to the 29 accompanying drawinqs in which:

31 Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one embo~iment of 32 spectacle arrangement in accordance with the 33 present invention; and 34 Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of a spectacle arrangement in ~ W093~2270~ ?. 13 ~ 7 (~ ~ PCT~GB92/00810 l accordance with the present invention.

3 Referring to Fig. l a spectacle arrangement in 4 accordance with the present invention comprises a hollow tubular frame 1 having; legs 2; a top bar 3; a 6 bottom bar 4, with a nose piece 5, and a lens 7 arrangement 6.
9 An air supply is provided from an air pump or compressed air bottle, shown generally at 7, and 11 connected to the frame 1 by a flexible tube ~. A
12 series of air outlets 9, lO and ll are provided on the 13 top bar 3, bottom bar 4 and nose piece 5 respectively.
14 The air outlets are either small diameter holes or lS appropriately angled and positioned slits.

17 In operation the air supply 7 provides an air flow l8 which creates a positive air pressure within the frame l9 l which results in the creation of a plurality of air streams across a users eyes, nose and mouth from the 21 outlets 9, lO and ll. The effect o~ this is that an 22 area of slightly higher pressure air is created in 23 front of the users face. As the air supply is 24 preferably filtered this creates a pollen free area in front of the users face which thus removes the cause of 26 allergic reaction and thus provides relief to a hay 27 fever sufferer.

29 The a~r supply 7 which may be in the form of a battery operated air pump or a small compressed air cylinder 3l can easily be attached to a users belt and the tube 8 32 routed to the frame l as appropriate.

34 The particular embodiment illustrated is a frame having wrap around sun lens type lenses but alternative 2134 f~

1 arrangements are possible. For example, plain lenses, 2 prescription lenses or any type of filtered lenses may 3 be used. In addition the len~es may be of glass or 4 plastics material and the frame may also be met l or plastics material as desired. The spectacles are thus 6 suitable for users requiring corrective vision 7 spectacles as well as those who do not~

g A second embodiment of a spectacle arrangement in accordance with ~he present invention is shown in FigO2 11 and is generally similar to that shown in Fig. 1.
12 Accordingly like parts are accorded the same reference 13 numerals. This embodiment is somewhat simplified 14 however in that it is only the top bar 3 which is lS provided with air outlets. These air outlets are arranged both along the top of the top bar 3, 17 designated l9a, and below the top bar 3, designated 18 l9b. As befoxe an air supply 7 is provided by an air 19 pump 7 through a tube 8 and a separate filter 7a is also provided.

22 In operation the effect of the air flows from outlets 23 l9a and l9b is to create an area of positive air 24 pressure around t~e users eyes with filtered air thus minimising the users exposure to pollen laden air.
26 Exposure to pollen laden air will not be entirely 27 eliminated but the effect of the spectacles is to 28 considerably reduce the pollen count in the area around 29 the users eyes and to some extent the nose. The spectacles are also useful in dust laden atmosphere or 31 when noxious fumes are present.

33 It is also envisaged that a version having a simple 34 lensless frame could be produced if it is desired to have the air flow arrangement by itself.

wo93r22702 ~1 3 ~ 7 ~ 9 PCT/GB9l/00810 1 Modifications and improvements may be incorporated 2 without departing from the scope of the invention.
