Abstract
ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A roof scaffolding consisting of at least one pair of frame members. Each of the frame members consists of an elongate suspension member having a first end, a second end, a building facing side and an outwardly facing side. The first end of the suspension member is secured under the eaves of a building such that the suspension member is suspended adjacent to the sidewall of the building with the building facing side facing toward the building and the outwardly facing side facing away from the building. A platform support extends substantially horizontally from the outwardly facing side of the suspension member. Planks are secured to the platform support such that the planks span adjacent platform supports of the at least two frame members.

BACKGROU~D OF T~E INVENTION
There i8 a need for an improved form of scaffolding for use by workmen working near the edge of a roof.
SUMMARY OF THE INV~NTIO~
What is required is scaffolding on which a workman can stand when performing work at or near the edge of a roof.
According to the present invention there is provided a scaffolding which is comprised of at least one pair of frame members. Each of the frame members consists of an elongate suspension member having a first end, a second end, a building facing side and an outwardly facing side. Means is provided for securing the first end of the suspension member under the eaves of a building such that the suspension member is suspended adjacent to the sidewall of the building with the building facing side facing toward the building and the outwardly facing side facing away from the building. A
platform support extends substantially horizontally from the outwardly facing side of the suspenslon member. Means is provided for securing planks to the platform support such that the planks span adjacent platform supports of the at least two frame members. -The means for suspending the suspension member will necessarily vary. A suspension means which is suitable for new construction, is not necessarily suitable for use when repairing an existing roof. Prior to soffit installation with new construction access can be obtained to place a clamping device over the top of the sidewalls of a building. The means for securing the first end of the suspension member under the eaves of the building can, therefore, be a tubular female receptacle positioned at the first end of the suspension member, a clamping member adapted for telescopic insertion into the receptacle, and means for locking ~he clamping member 20~6901 within the receptacle in a desired relative telescopic position.
After soffit installation is complete, the suspension means must be more elaborate. A t:ubular female receptacle positioned at the first end of the suspension member is still employed. A contact member is adapted for telescopic insertion into the receptacle to maintain spacing between the suspension member and the side wall of the building. The contact member has an extension portion which extends through and protrudes past the receptacle. Means is provided for locking the contact member within the receptacle in a desired relative telescopic position. A mounting bracket is provided which is adapted to be secured to a sloped roof of the building. The mounting bracket is pivotally mounted to a sleeve which i6 telescopically mated with the extension portion of the contact member. Means is provided for locking the sleeve to the extension portion of the contact member.
Although beneficial results can be obtained through the use of the roof scaffolding as described, there are other improvements which can be added to improve performance. Even more beneficial results can be obtained by providing a contact member positioned on the building facing side adjacent the - 25 second end of the suspension member. When a load is placed upon planks which span adjacent platform supports, the suspension member pivots toward the sidewall of the building bringing the contact member in contact with the sidewall of a building.
It is important that the platform supports on which men and material rest be as strong as possible. Even more beneficial results may, therefore, be obtained by providing reinforcement to the platform support. The platform support has a first end and a second end. The first end of the platform support is attached at an intermediate position between the first end and the second end of the suspension 20g6~
member. A brace member e~t~nds diagonally between -the second end of the suspension member and the second end of the platform support.
It i6 important that some step6 are taken to ensure that a workman does not fall from the planks which form the platform spanning between adjacent platform supports. Even more beneficial results may, therefore, be obtained by having a guard rail support extending substantially vertically from the platform support and means for securing planks to the guard rail support. The planks span adjacent guard rail supports of the at least two frame members thereby serving as a guard rail.

DETAILED DESCRIPTIS:I~ O~ TI~E PR~EFERRED EMBODIME~T
The preferred embodiments, a roof scaffolding generally identified by reference numeral 10, will now be described with reference to FIGURES 1 and 2.
There are two embodiments of roof scaffolding 10. A first embodiment is illustrated in FIGURE ~. A second embodiment is illustrated in FIGU~ 2. The difference between the embodiments relates to the manner in which they are secured under the eaves of a roof. The first embodiment is for use with to new construction in which soffits have not been installed. It can be used as soon as sidewalls on a building 2~901 have been raised and braced. The second embodiment i8 for use once the dwelling is completed. Those features that both embodiments have in common will first be described.
Referring to FIGUR~S 1 and 2, each embodiment of roof scaffolding 10 uses at least one pair of frame members 12. For ease of reference two frame members 12 in each pair will be identified as 12a and 12b, and common features on adjacent frame members 12a and 12b wili similarly be designated by a and b. Each of frame members 12 COllSiSt of a substantially vertical suspension member 14 having a first end 16, a second end 18, a building facing side 20 and an outwardly facing side 22. Frame members 12 have a substantially horizontal platform support 24 having a first end 26 and a second end 28. First end 26 of platform support 24 is attached at an intermediate position 30 between first end 16 and second end 18 of suspension member 14. A brace member 32 extends diagonally between second end 18 of suspension member 14 and second end 28 of platform support 24 to provide structural reinforcement.
A guard rail support 34 extends substantially vertically from platform support 24. A tubular female receptacle 36 is positioned at first end 16 of suspension member 14 and serves as a component in the means for securing first end 16 of suspension member 14 under eaves 38 of a building 40, which 25 will hereinafter be further described. With both embodiments suspension member 14 is suspended under eaves 38 and adjacent to a sidewall 42 of building 40. A lower contact member 44 is positioned adjacent to second end 18 of suspension member 14. With the second embodiment it is preferable that contact member 44 be adjustable. Contact member 44 is adapted to contact without damaging sidewall 42 of building 40. Planks 48 span adjacent platform supports 24 of frame members 12a and 12b. Brackets 52 serve as means for securing planks 54 to guard rail support 34 such that planks 54 span adjacent guard rail supports 34 of frame members 12a and 12b to form a guard rail.
2~8~9~1 The use and operation of roof scaffolding 10, generally, will now be described. When suspension member 14 is secured in position under eaves 38 and adjacent sidewall 42, workmen can stand upon and load equipment on platform planks 48. When standing on platform planks 48, eaves 38 will be about at the height of the waist of the workmen. From platform planks 48 the workman can perform work partially up the roof. Guard rail planks 54 provides the workmen with some protection against falling backward off platform planks 48. When the workman must work higher up on the roof he can climb onto the roof from platform planks 48, and work knowing that should he slip and slide down the roof he will be caught by platform planks 48 and guard rail planks 54, rather than fall all the way down onto the ground.
Referring to FIGURE ~, the means for securing first end 16 of suspension member 14 under eaves 38 of building 40 is a clamping member 58 which has a gripping portion 60 and an opposed protruding portion 62. Protruding portion 62 is adapted for telescopic insertion into receptacle 36 at first end 16 of suspension member 14. It is preferred that gripping portion 60 have nail receiving openings (not shown). A locking pin 66 is insertable through aligned openings (not shown) in protruding portion 62 and receptacle 36 serves as means for locking protruding portion 62 of clamping member 58 within receptacle 60 in a desired relative telescopic position.
The use and operation of the suspension means illustrated in FIGURE 1 will now be described. Clamping member 58 can be slid over sidewall 42 until gripping portion 60 engages sidewall 42 and protruding portion 62 protrudes from under eaves 38. Gripping portion 60 is then nailed to sidewall 42 by nails extended through the nail receiving openings. Roof scaffolding 10 is then lifted into position using ropes, ladders or both and the receptacles 36 on first end 16 of suspension members 14 are then telescopically slid over protruding portion 62 of clamping member 58, such that sidewall 20~6901 42 is clamped inbetween gripping portion 60 and suspension member 14. Clamping member 58 is then locked in the desired relative telescopic position in relation to receptacLe 36 by inserting locking pin 66 through aligned openings in protruding portion 62 and receptacle 36.
Referring to FIGURE 2, the means for securing first end 16 of suspension member 14 under eavles 38 of building 40 is an ex~ended contact member 70 adapted for telescopic insertion into recep-tacle 36. Extended contact member 70 has a contact end 72 and an extension portion 74 which extends through and protrudes passed receptacle 36. A locking pin 76 insertable through aligned openings (not shown) in receptacle 36 and contact member 70 serves as means for locking contact member 70 within receptacle 36 in a desired relative telescopic position. A mounting bracket 80 is pivotally mounted to a sleeve 82 which is, in turn, telescopically mated with extension portion 74 of extended contact member 70. ~ locking pin 84 insertable through aligned openings (not shown) in sleeve 82 and extension portion 74 serves as means for locking mounting bracket 80 to extension portion 74 of contact member 70. Mounting bracket 80 has a projecting tongue 88 with a series of nail receiving openings (not shown) which permit mounting bracket 80 to be nailed to a sloped roof of a building 40 by means of nails 90. Mounting bracket 80 also has a secondary attachment point in the form of a pocket 92 in which a "U" shaped anchor 94 attached to the roof is received.
The use and operation of the suspension means illustrated in FIGURE 2 will now be described. "U" shaped anchor 94 is first attached to the roof. The distance between sidewall 42 and the edge of eaves 38 is then measured. In most cases this distance is a standard dimension. The positioning of contact member 70 and sleeve 82 are then adjusted to accommodate the distance between sidewall 42 and the edge of eaves 38. Contact member 70 is adjusted by inserting locking pin 76 through r 2~69~1 `
selected aligned openings in receptacle 36 and contact member 70. Sleeve 82 i8 similarly adjusted by inserting locking pin 84 through selected a],igned openings in sleeve 82 and extension portion 74 of contact member 70. Roof scaffolding 10 is then hauled up to a position under eaves 38 using ropes, ladders, or both. In order to maintain roof scaffolding temporarily in position pocket 92 on mounting bracket 80 is slid over "U"
shaped anchors 94 which were previously installed on the roof.
Nails 90 are then driven through nail receiving openings on projecting tongue 88 to fasten mounting bracket 80 more securely to the roof. When in position, contact end 72 of extended contact member 70 engages sidewall 42 at first end 16 of suspension member 14, and contact member 44 engages sidewall 42 at second end 18 of suspension member 14.
It will be apparent to one skilled in the art that modifications may be made to the illustrated embodiments without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the claims.
BACKGROU~D OF T~E INVENTION
There i8 a need for an improved form of scaffolding for use by workmen working near the edge of a roof.
SUMMARY OF THE INV~NTIO~
What is required is scaffolding on which a workman can stand when performing work at or near the edge of a roof.
According to the present invention there is provided a scaffolding which is comprised of at least one pair of frame members. Each of the frame members consists of an elongate suspension member having a first end, a second end, a building facing side and an outwardly facing side. Means is provided for securing the first end of the suspension member under the eaves of a building such that the suspension member is suspended adjacent to the sidewall of the building with the building facing side facing toward the building and the outwardly facing side facing away from the building. A
platform support extends substantially horizontally from the outwardly facing side of the suspenslon member. Means is provided for securing planks to the platform support such that the planks span adjacent platform supports of the at least two frame members. -The means for suspending the suspension member will necessarily vary. A suspension means which is suitable for new construction, is not necessarily suitable for use when repairing an existing roof. Prior to soffit installation with new construction access can be obtained to place a clamping device over the top of the sidewalls of a building. The means for securing the first end of the suspension member under the eaves of the building can, therefore, be a tubular female receptacle positioned at the first end of the suspension member, a clamping member adapted for telescopic insertion into the receptacle, and means for locking ~he clamping member 20~6901 within the receptacle in a desired relative telescopic position.
After soffit installation is complete, the suspension means must be more elaborate. A t:ubular female receptacle positioned at the first end of the suspension member is still employed. A contact member is adapted for telescopic insertion into the receptacle to maintain spacing between the suspension member and the side wall of the building. The contact member has an extension portion which extends through and protrudes past the receptacle. Means is provided for locking the contact member within the receptacle in a desired relative telescopic position. A mounting bracket is provided which is adapted to be secured to a sloped roof of the building. The mounting bracket is pivotally mounted to a sleeve which i6 telescopically mated with the extension portion of the contact member. Means is provided for locking the sleeve to the extension portion of the contact member.
Although beneficial results can be obtained through the use of the roof scaffolding as described, there are other improvements which can be added to improve performance. Even more beneficial results can be obtained by providing a contact member positioned on the building facing side adjacent the - 25 second end of the suspension member. When a load is placed upon planks which span adjacent platform supports, the suspension member pivots toward the sidewall of the building bringing the contact member in contact with the sidewall of a building.
It is important that the platform supports on which men and material rest be as strong as possible. Even more beneficial results may, therefore, be obtained by providing reinforcement to the platform support. The platform support has a first end and a second end. The first end of the platform support is attached at an intermediate position between the first end and the second end of the suspension 20g6~
member. A brace member e~t~nds diagonally between -the second end of the suspension member and the second end of the platform support.
It i6 important that some step6 are taken to ensure that a workman does not fall from the planks which form the platform spanning between adjacent platform supports. Even more beneficial results may, therefore, be obtained by having a guard rail support extending substantially vertically from the platform support and means for securing planks to the guard rail support. The planks span adjacent guard rail supports of the at least two frame members thereby serving as a guard rail.

The preferred embodiments, a roof scaffolding generally identified by reference numeral 10, will now be described with reference to FIGURES 1 and 2.
There are two embodiments of roof scaffolding 10. A first embodiment is illustrated in FIGURE ~. A second embodiment is illustrated in FIGU~ 2. The difference between the embodiments relates to the manner in which they are secured under the eaves of a roof. The first embodiment is for use with to new construction in which soffits have not been installed. It can be used as soon as sidewalls on a building 2~901 have been raised and braced. The second embodiment i8 for use once the dwelling is completed. Those features that both embodiments have in common will first be described.
Referring to FIGUR~S 1 and 2, each embodiment of roof scaffolding 10 uses at least one pair of frame members 12. For ease of reference two frame members 12 in each pair will be identified as 12a and 12b, and common features on adjacent frame members 12a and 12b wili similarly be designated by a and b. Each of frame members 12 COllSiSt of a substantially vertical suspension member 14 having a first end 16, a second end 18, a building facing side 20 and an outwardly facing side 22. Frame members 12 have a substantially horizontal platform support 24 having a first end 26 and a second end 28. First end 26 of platform support 24 is attached at an intermediate position 30 between first end 16 and second end 18 of suspension member 14. A brace member 32 extends diagonally between second end 18 of suspension member 14 and second end 28 of platform support 24 to provide structural reinforcement.
A guard rail support 34 extends substantially vertically from platform support 24. A tubular female receptacle 36 is positioned at first end 16 of suspension member 14 and serves as a component in the means for securing first end 16 of suspension member 14 under eaves 38 of a building 40, which 25 will hereinafter be further described. With both embodiments suspension member 14 is suspended under eaves 38 and adjacent to a sidewall 42 of building 40. A lower contact member 44 is positioned adjacent to second end 18 of suspension member 14. With the second embodiment it is preferable that contact member 44 be adjustable. Contact member 44 is adapted to contact without damaging sidewall 42 of building 40. Planks 48 span adjacent platform supports 24 of frame members 12a and 12b. Brackets 52 serve as means for securing planks 54 to guard rail support 34 such that planks 54 span adjacent guard rail supports 34 of frame members 12a and 12b to form a guard rail.

When suspension member 14 is secured in position under eaves 38 and adjacent sidewall 42, workmen can stand upon and load equipment on platform planks 48. When standing on platform planks 48, eaves 38 will be about at the height of the waist of the workmen. From platform planks 48 the workman can perform work partially up the roof. Guard rail planks 54 provides the workmen with some protection against falling backward off platform planks 48. When the workman must work higher up on the roof he can climb onto the roof from platform planks 48, and work knowing that should he slip and slide down the roof he will be caught by platform planks 48 and guard rail planks 54, rather than fall all the way down onto the ground.
Referring to FIGURE ~, the means for securing first end 16 of suspension member 14 under eaves 38 of building 40 is a clamping member 58 which has a gripping portion 60 and an opposed protruding portion 62. Protruding portion 62 is adapted for telescopic insertion into receptacle 36 at first end 16 of suspension member 14. It is preferred that gripping portion 60 have nail receiving openings (not shown). A locking pin 66 is insertable through aligned openings (not shown) in protruding portion 62 and receptacle 36 serves as means for locking protruding portion 62 of clamping member 58 within receptacle 60 in a desired relative telescopic position.
The use and operation of the suspension means illustrated in FIGURE 1 will now be described. Clamping member 58 can be slid over sidewall 42 until gripping portion 60 engages sidewall 42 and protruding portion 62 protrudes from under eaves 38. Gripping portion 60 is then nailed to sidewall 42 by nails extended through the nail receiving openings. Roof scaffolding 10 is then lifted into position using ropes, ladders or both and the receptacles 36 on first end 16 of suspension members 14 are then telescopically slid over protruding portion 62 of clamping member 58, such that sidewall 20~6901 42 is clamped inbetween gripping portion 60 and suspension member 14. Clamping member 58 is then locked in the desired relative telescopic position in relation to receptacLe 36 by inserting locking pin 66 through aligned openings in protruding portion 62 and receptacle 36.
Referring to FIGURE 2, the means for securing first end 16 of suspension member 14 under eavles 38 of building 40 is an ex~ended contact member 70 adapted for telescopic insertion into recep-tacle 36. Extended contact member 70 has a contact end 72 and an extension portion 74 which extends through and protrudes passed receptacle 36. A locking pin 76 insertable through aligned openings (not shown) in receptacle 36 and contact member 70 serves as means for locking contact member 70 within receptacle 36 in a desired relative telescopic position. A mounting bracket 80 is pivotally mounted to a sleeve 82 which is, in turn, telescopically mated with extension portion 74 of extended contact member 70. ~ locking pin 84 insertable through aligned openings (not shown) in sleeve 82 and extension portion 74 serves as means for locking mounting bracket 80 to extension portion 74 of contact member 70. Mounting bracket 80 has a projecting tongue 88 with a series of nail receiving openings (not shown) which permit mounting bracket 80 to be nailed to a sloped roof of a building 40 by means of nails 90. Mounting bracket 80 also has a secondary attachment point in the form of a pocket 92 in which a "U" shaped anchor 94 attached to the roof is received.
The use and operation of the suspension means illustrated in FIGURE 2 will now be described. "U" shaped anchor 94 is first attached to the roof. The distance between sidewall 42 and the edge of eaves 38 is then measured. In most cases this distance is a standard dimension. The positioning of contact member 70 and sleeve 82 are then adjusted to accommodate the distance between sidewall 42 and the edge of eaves 38. Contact member 70 is adjusted by inserting locking pin 76 through r 2~69~1 `

Nails 90 are then driven through nail receiving openings on projecting tongue 88 to fasten mounting bracket 80 more securely to the roof. When in position, contact end 72 of extended contact member 70 engages sidewall 42 at first end 16 of suspension member 14, and contact member 44 engages sidewall 42 at second end 18 of suspension member 14.
It will be apparent to one skilled in the art that modifications may be made to the illustrated embodiments without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the claims.
Claims (10)
1. A roof scaffolding, comprising:
a. at least one pair of frame members, each of the frame members comprising:
i. an elongate suspension member having a first end, a second end, a building facing side and an outwardly facing side;
ii. means for securing the first end of the suspension member under the eaves of a building such that the suspension member is suspended adjacent to the sidewall of the building with the building facing side facing toward the building and the outwardly facing side facing away from the building;
iii. a platform support extending substantially horizontally from the outwardly facing side of the suspension member; and iv. means for securing planks to the platform support such that the planks span adjacent platform supports of the at least two frame members.
a. at least one pair of frame members, each of the frame members comprising:
i. an elongate suspension member having a first end, a second end, a building facing side and an outwardly facing side;
ii. means for securing the first end of the suspension member under the eaves of a building such that the suspension member is suspended adjacent to the sidewall of the building with the building facing side facing toward the building and the outwardly facing side facing away from the building;
iii. a platform support extending substantially horizontally from the outwardly facing side of the suspension member; and iv. means for securing planks to the platform support such that the planks span adjacent platform supports of the at least two frame members.
2. The roof scaffolding as defined in Claim 1, having a contact member positioned on the building facing side adjacent the second end of the suspension member, such that when a load is placed upon planks which span adjacent platform supports the suspension member pivots toward the sidewall of the building bringing the contact member in contact with the sidewall of a building.
3. The roof scaffolding as defined in Claim 1, the platform support having a first end and a second end, the first end of the platform support being attached at an intermediate position between the first end and the second end of the suspension member, and a brace member extending diagonally between the second end of the suspension member and the second end of the platform support.
4. The roof scaffolding as defined in Claim 1, having a guard rail support extending substantially vertically from the platform support and means for securing planks to the guard rail support such that the planks span adjacent guard rail supports of the at least two frame members.
5. The roof scaffolding as defined in Claim 1, the means for securing the first end of the suspension member under the eaves of a building being a tubular female receptacle positioned at the first end of the suspension member, a clamping member adapted for telescopic insertion into the receptacle, and means for locking the clamping member within the receptacle in a desired relative telescopic position.
6. The roof scaffolding as defined in Claim 1, the means for securing the first end of the suspension member under the eaves of a building being a tubular female receptacle positioned at the first end of the suspension member, a contact member adapted for telescopic insertion into the receptacle, the contact member having an extension portion which extends through and protrudes past the receptacle, means for locking the contact member within the receptacle in a desired relative telescopic position, a mounting bracket adapted to be secured to a sloped roof of a building, the mounting bracket being pivotally mounted to a sleeve which is telescopically mated with the extension portion of the contact member, and means for locking the sleeve to the extension portion of the contact member.
7. The roof scaffolding as defined in Claim 6, having means for securing planks to the mounting bracket such planks are secured to and adjacent mounting brackets to prevent debris from sliding off the roof onto the planks spanning the platform supports.
8. A roof scaffolding, comprising:
a. at least one pair of frame members, each of the frame members comprising:
i. a substantially vertical suspension member having a first end, a second end, a building facing side and an outwardly facing side;
ii. a substantially horizontal platform support having a first end and a second end, the first end of the platform support being attached to the outwardly facing side at an intermediate position between the first end and the second end of the suspension member;
iii. a brace member extending diagonally between the second end of the suspension member and the second end of the platform support; and iv. a guard rail support extending substantially vertically from the platform support;
b. means for securing the first end of the suspension member under the eaves of a building such that the suspension member is suspended adjacent to the sidewall of the building;
c. a contact member positioned adjacent the second end of the suspension member, the contact member being adapted to contact without damaging the side of a building;
d. means for securing planks to the platform support such that the planks span adjacent platform supports of the at least two frame members thereby forming a platform; and e. means for securing planks to the guard rail support such that the planks span adjacent guard rail supports of the at least two frame members, thereby forming a guard rail.
a. at least one pair of frame members, each of the frame members comprising:
i. a substantially vertical suspension member having a first end, a second end, a building facing side and an outwardly facing side;
ii. a substantially horizontal platform support having a first end and a second end, the first end of the platform support being attached to the outwardly facing side at an intermediate position between the first end and the second end of the suspension member;
iii. a brace member extending diagonally between the second end of the suspension member and the second end of the platform support; and iv. a guard rail support extending substantially vertically from the platform support;
b. means for securing the first end of the suspension member under the eaves of a building such that the suspension member is suspended adjacent to the sidewall of the building;
c. a contact member positioned adjacent the second end of the suspension member, the contact member being adapted to contact without damaging the side of a building;
d. means for securing planks to the platform support such that the planks span adjacent platform supports of the at least two frame members thereby forming a platform; and e. means for securing planks to the guard rail support such that the planks span adjacent guard rail supports of the at least two frame members, thereby forming a guard rail.
9. The roof scaffolding as defined in Claim 8, the means for securing the first end of the suspension member under the eaves of a building being a tubular female receptacle positioned at the first end of the suspension member, a clamping member adapted for telescopic insertion into the receptacle, and means for locking the clamping member within the receptacle in a desired relative telescopic position.
10. The roof scaffolding as defined in Claim 8, the means for securing the first end of the suspension member under the eaves of a building being a tubular female receptacle positioned at the first end of the suspension member, a contact member adapted for telescopic insertion into the receptacle, the contact member having an extension portion which extends through and protrudes passed the receptacle, means for locking the contact member within the receptacle in a desired relative telescopic position, a mounting bracket adapted to be nailed to a sloped roof of a building the mounting bracket being pivotally mounted to a sleeve which is telescopically mated with the extension portion of the contact member, and means for locking the mounting bracket to the extension portion of the contact member.
