Abstract

DUAL TONE MULTI FREQUENCY PERSONAL CARD
Abstract This invention relates to a smart card and more particuiar to a smart card that interacts in a communication or processing system through DTMF tones.

Description

Description of the Prior Art Callin~ Cards in current use have printed thereor the name of the issuin~ company. In addition the name of the user and his account number which is provided in a raised type in order that the card may be placed in a device and data imprinted. The card also carries a ma~netic strip which is readable by the device and identifiesthe user of the card. ~ ;
In addition, the user presently needs to input a strin~ of addltional dl~its and the number dialed. The followin~ is a short description and examples of callin~ card dialin~
patterns in the U.S. and Canada.

A long distance call is placed by dialing O and the dialed ,~ number. After this point you will be prompted by the long d distance carriers name and then prompted to " enter your calling card number." If you are prompted by MCI and you wish to make a call through AT&T you would have to han~-up, and call 10ATT0 plus the called number and then the callina card number. AT&T's network may also be reached by 1 800 callATT. AT&T prefers that people call 10A1~0 to reach their network ( less digits to dial ~.
On the other hand MCI and Sprint use their 1 800 numbers to access their network as well as a 6 di~it access code.
Desired carriers do not process long distance calls even thou~h they also have their callin~ cards. The lon~
distance carrier such as AT&T, U.S. Sprint and MCI
would invoice the B.O.C.'s ( Bell Operating Companies ) and the B.O.C in return would re-bill their customer.

2 ~ 7 ~' rrj Canada -In Canada there are telephone companies (Telco) or desired carriers ( Bell Canada, MT&T, BCTEL etc.) and resellers or alternate carriers ( Callnst, Cable & Wireless, and Unitel etc.).
For all Telco's you must enter O plus your called number and then your callin~ card number. ( In all circumstances if you do not enter a callin0 card number an operator will assist you and ask your number.
The apparatus of the invention could help reduce the operators used by phone companies in Canada the U.S.A.
All alternate carriers use a 7 di~it access number,10 di~it authorization number, and finally the dialad number.

frequencies in a manner proposed by the applicant.

$umm~y of the Invention In the accordance with the invention, a personal card typically the size of a standard plastic card may be used in a variety of applications, from sendin~ multi frequency tones to a desired or alternate carrier and / or other companies and institutions ( ie. banks, medical, transportation, petroleum ) for authorization purposes. ~-The card looks and feels like an ordinary credit card. The card incorporates a printed circuit board on which a controller, a speaker, a battery for powerin~ a controller and all its circuitry and a plurality of user operable keys are mounted.
The card contains circuitry for transmittin~ DTMF signals between the card and a lon~ distance network. The DTMF frequencies pro~rammed in the card are the couplln~ means between the card and the public \ private ;
lon~ distance networks.
The card controller has the capabilities of storing, transmittin~ information including the card's unique number, user personal l.D. number and an update code, as well as monitorin~ volta~e levels to insure proper operation.
The card is selectively repro~rammable by an authorized representative at the associated station with new and different data as desired.

2 0 ~ ~ 7 ~ ~3 Detailed Description With further reference to Fi~. 1, a callin~ card 5 is illustrated which may be formed of semi-rigid plastic of -the kind that is commonly used in credit cards.
The card shall be, typically, the size of a commonly used credit card but not necsssarily restricted in size and / or ~-thickness 6. The card consist of multiple pushbuttons 1, 3 ,4 etc, a speaker 2, battery and latch door 7, or other suitable source of power and processin0 circuitry 8.
The pushbuttons 1,3,4 are of the type commonly used in a hand-held calculator. The speaker 2, shall be of the miniaturized type, inte~rated with the processin~ circuitry ~-and not hinder the size and dimension of the card. The -processin~ system 8 includes a controllar and associated components and the electrical connections therebetween for carryin~ out the functions which will presently be described.
The card shall have provision for a Company lo~o and name, customer account numbers, expiration dates (month/year), extra fields for miscellaneous information, holo~rams, and other future developments in technolo~y that will increase security techniques and methods, and enhance measures to combat counterfeitin~.
Fi~. 2 illustrates a block dia~ram of the processin~
system. This includes one 19 of the three pushbuttons de~cribed in Fi~. 1, erasable pro0rammable read only memory (EPROM) 20, controllér 21, frequency generator 22, di~ital to analo~ convertor 23, and speaker 24. The particular hardware components selected for use in Fi~. 2 are conventional in nature and can vary dependin~ on the particular requirements of the user.
Fi~. 3 portrays the ~eneration of DTMF frequencies.
Di~qits are composed of one tone from the Low Group and one from the Hi~h ~roup. ex: di~qit 9 in DTMF would consist of ~he 852 Hz and 1477 HZ tone pair. The value 2 (~ ~ ,; 7 7 ~
s should be within + ~r - 1.5% of the nominal frequency values.Card must send the DTMF tone for a minimum -duration of 40 milliseconds ON and 40 milliseconds OFF. -( The preferred value would be 50 milliseconds ) The nominal DTMF tone level should be -25 to +O dBm.

constructed as set fourth above will be described with reference to the flow chart of Fi~. 4. ~ -When a call is to be made, the telephons receiver is removed 30 from the cradle of the telephone device hence renderin~ an off hook condition 31. If dial tone is not ~iven, the operation would end 32. If dial tone is heard 31, a O plus the called number is dialed 33. A
messa~e is received 34 requesting to enter a callin~ card number. If the callinQ card number is not entered within a specified time, the operator 35 will intercept the call and prompt the caller for a callin~ card number. The speaker of the apparatus of the invention will be placed on the mouthpiece 36. The user will select either the corporate or residential button 37 dependin~ on which authorization number the call will be char~ed. The selected button will be depressed, initiatin~ a series of DTMF tones 37. The DTMF tones will be sensed by the Telco 38. The Telco wTII perform an account code verification 39 . If validated, the call will be established 41. If the account code is not validated, the operator will terminate the call 40. If thc mesfia~e requests the caller 34 to enter the callin~ card number, and the caller does so within a specified time the caller will place, the speaker of the Tnvention will be placed on the mouthpiece 36. The user will select either the corporate or residential button 37 dependin~ on which authorization number, the call will be char~ed. The selected button will be depressed, initiatin~
a serles of DTMF tones 37. The DTMF tones will be sensed by the Telco 38. The Telco will perform an account code verification and validation 39 . If validated, the call will be established 41. If the account code is not validated, the call will be intercepted by an operator 35.
The operator will request the caller to re-enter the callin~ ;-card number 35, 36, 37, 38. If the number is valid 39, the call will be established 41. If the account code is not valid for 2 second time, the operator 35 will indicate to -`` 2 ~
the caller that the authorization number is incorrect and cannot be validated. Hence, the call will be terminated 41 .

A call operation usin~ the apparatus of the invention constructed as set fourth above will be described with reference to the flow chart of Fi~. 5.
When a call is to be made, the telephone receiver is removed 44 from the cradle of the telephone device, hence renderin~ an off hook condition 45. If dial tone is not ~iven this would end the operation 46. If dial tone is heard 45, the speaker of the apparatus of the invention -will be placed on the mouthpiece 47. The caller will ~i:
select the network access button and depress it 48. If the network access code 48 is invalid, the call would end 49. If the network access code is valid 48, a second dial tone is ~iven by the alternate carrier 50. If the callin~
card number is not entered within a specified time, the call would end 52. If the callin~ card number is entered within the specified time then the user will select either the corporate or residential button 51, dependin~ on which authorization number, the call will be char~ed. The selected button will be depressed, initiatin~ a series of DTMF tones 53. The DTMF tones will be sensed by the alternate carrier 53. The alternate carrier will perform an account code verification and validation 54. Re~ardless if the account code is valid or invalid, a third dial tone is ~Iven 55. The caller dials the desired number 56. If the account code is invalld or if the number dialed is incorrect the call i8 terminated 58. If the account code is valid and if the number dialed Is correct then, the call is established 59.

A call operation usin~ the apparatus of the invention constructed as set fourth above will be described with reference to the flow chart of Fi~. 6.
When a call is to be made, the telephone receiver is removed 60 from the cradle of the telephone device hence rendering an off hook condition 61. If dial tone is not ~iven this would end the operation 62. If dial tone is heard 61, the speaker of the apparatus of the invention will be placed on the mouthpiece 63. The caller will select the network access button and depress it 64. If the network access code 64 is invalid, the call is then -.
ended 65. If the network access code is valid 64, an automated messa~e from the alternate carrier will be -heard 65. The automated messa~e will identify itself and request the caller to dial 0 and the desired number 67.
The automated messa~e will now request the caller to enter the callin~ card number 68. If the callin3 card number is not entered within a specified time, the operator 69 will intercept the call and will prompt the caller for a callin~ card number. The speaksr of the apparatus of the invention will be placed on the mouthpiece 71. The user will select either the corporate or residential button 72, dependin~ on which authorization number, the call will be char~ed. The selected button will be depressed, initiatin~ a series of DTMF tones 72. The DTMF tones will be sensed by the alternate carrier 73. The alternate carrier will perform an account code verification and validation 74. If validated, the call will be established 75. If the account code is not validated, the operator 69 will terminate the call 70. If the message requests the caller 68 to enter the callin~
card number, and the caller does so within a specified time the caller will place the speaker of the apparatus of the invention on the mouthpiece 71. The user will select either the corporate or residential bu~ton 72 dependin~ on which authorization number, the call will be char~ed. The selected button will be depressed, initiatin~ a series of DTMF tones 72. The DTMF tones will be sensed by the alternate carrier 73. validated, the call will be intercepted by an operator 69.
The operator will request the caller to re-enter the calJin~
card number 68, 71, 72, 73. If the number is valid 74 the call will be established 75. If the account code is not valid for the second ~ime the operator 69 will indicate to the caller that the authorization number is incorrect and cannot be validated, hence the call will be terminated 70.

Claims (11)

1. An automated operable card that reproduces DTMF
tones and frequencies transmitted through a commonly used telephone handset to a selected long distance network.
2. A card as in claim 1 wherein said multi-frequency tones are comprised of 0 to 9 and A to D for Fig. 3
3. Each end user has a unique personal identification number programmed as per claim 2.
4. A card as in claim 2 wherein said from a conventional telephone dial pad; A to D
frequencies cannot be reproduced thus eliminating long distance fraud.
5. A card as in claim 2 wherein said can be programmed remotely by an authorized representative .
6. A card as in claim 1 wherein said can be programmed to reproduce DTMF frequencies to access the user selected network provider.
7. A card as in claim 1 wherein said would maintain a high level of reliability by not permitting transmission of frequencies if the output level has not achieved a minimum of - 25 dBm.
8. A card as in claim 1 wherein said quick one button operation capable of transmitting a series of DTMF
tones simplifying manual dialing and reducing human error.
9. A card as in claim 1 wherein said designed with versatility has the capability of becoming a multi-functional card that can be programmed for multi-purpose applications.
10. The card as in claim 1 wherein said user authorization codes are audible but not visually revealed to any network employee or bystander thus reducing exposure of privileged information while enhancing confidentiality and reducing fraud.
11. The card as in claim 1 wherein said user portability is achieved because of the credit card size and minimum thickness which makes it compact and pocket size.
