ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A dovetail hinge consisted of a door plate fastened to a door, a jambplate fastened to a doorjamb, a dovetail slide movably fastened to the door plate through a dovetail joint and pivotably connected to the jambplate by a pivot pin, and a spring connected between the dovetail slide and the door plate for returning the door plate back to its original position in closing the door automatically each time the door was opened.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a dovetail hinge for a swinging door which is simple in structure, practical in function, easy to install, and inexpensive to manufacture.

A variety of hinges are known and widely used for fastening doors in place. Typically, a hinge comprises a pair of metal leaves joined through the knuckles by a pivot pin or pintle. This structure of hinge allows a door to be turned on a respective doorjamb, however, it can not move a door back to the closed position automatically each time the door was opened. There are hinges which allow a door to be moved back to the closed position automatically each time the door was opened. However, these hinges are commonly complicated in structure, expensive to manufacture, difficult to assemble, and inconvenient to install.

simple in structure and inexpensive to manufacture.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a dovetail hinge for an automatic door which is easy to install. It is still another object of the present invention to provide a dovetail hinge for an automatic door which i6 safe in use.

According to the preferred embodiment of the present invention, a dovetail hinge comprises a door plate fastened to a door, a jambplate fastened to a doGrjamb, a dovetail slide connected to the door plate through a dovetail joint and pivotably connected to the jambplate by a pivot pin, and a spring connected between the dovetail slide and the door plate. Pushing the door with force cau~es the door plate and the dovetail slide to make a relative movement for permitting the door to be turned on the doorjamb to an opened position.
Once the pressure is released from the door, the door plate is moved back by the spring to carry the door from the opened position to a closed position.

: DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODINENT
10Referring to Fig. 1, a dovetail hinge as constructed in accordance with the present invention is generally comprised of a door plate 1, a dovetail slide 2, a jambplate 3, a spring 4, and a pivot pin 5. The door plate 1 comprises an elongated base 10 having a 15dovetail groove 101 through its length, an end stop 13 raised from the dovetail groove 101 at one end, and two unitary, horizontal side wings 11,12 bilaterally extended from the elongated base 10 at the top and spaced by the dovetail groove 101. Through holes 20111,121 are respectively made on the side wings 11,12 for permitting the side wings 11,12 to be fastened to a door B by screws or any suitable fastening devices.

its length, in which the spring 4 is received, and a unitary knuckle 21 connected to the jambplate 3 by the pivot pin 5. The jambplate 3 is made from a flat plate having through holes 31, through which screws are inserted to fasten the jambplate 3 to a doorjamb A, and knuckles 32 at one end connected to the knuckle 21 on the dovetail slide 2 by the pivot pin 5. The spring 4 is received inside the dovetail groove 22 on the dovetail plate 2, having one end terminated into a first hook 41 hooked on a bolt (not shown) inside the dovetail plate 2 adjacent to the knuckle 21 and an opposite end terminated into a second hook 42 hooked on the end stop 13 of the door plate 1.

Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, the installation process of the present invention is quite simple and outlined hereinafter. The jambplate 3 is fastened to the doorjamb A by screws or any suitable fastening devices or by the process of spot welding. After the spring 4 has been inserted into the dovetail groove 22 on the dovetail slide 2 with the first hook 41 fastened in place, the dovetail slide 2 is inserted into the dovetail groove 101 on the elongated base 10 of the door plate 1, and the second hook 42 of tLe spring 4 is 2~.2(~ ~

hooked on the end stop 13 of the door plate 1, and then the knuckle 21 on the dovetail slide 2 is fastened to the jambplate 3 by the pivot pin 5 and connected between the two knuckles 32 on the jambplate 3. The door plate 1 is then fastened to the door B by screws or any suitable fastening devices, or by the process of spot welding. When installed, the dovetail slide 2 and the door plate 1 are allowed to make a relative movement as the door B is turned on the doorjamb A.

Referring to Fig. 4, pushing the door B with the hand causes it to be turned on the doorjamb A, and therefore the door B is opened conveniently. Once the hand was released from the door B, the spring 4 automàtically pulls the door plate 1 back to its former position relative to the dovetail slide 2, and therefore the door B is automatically closed again.

As indicated, the dovetail slide 2 is fastened to the door plate 1 through a dovetail joint, and therefore the dovetail slide 2 is stably guided to move back and forth relative to the door plate 1.
Because the spring 4 is concealed inside the dovetail slide 2, it is well protected. As the door B is completely opened, it is closely abutted to the doorjamb ~ 7 A to prevent from jamming the fingers. Furthermore, the dovetail hinge can be fastened in place by screws or through the process of spot welding according to the nature of the material of the door to be fastened.
Because less precision on installation position is allowed, the dovetail hinge can be quickly installed.

Claims

What is claimed is:
1. A dovetail hinge comprising:
a door plate having two horizontal side wings spaced by a dovetail groove and respectively fastened to a door, said dovetail groove having a front end opened and a rear end stopped by an end stop;
a dovetail slide movably inserted into the dovetail groove on said door plate and stopped by said end stop, said dovetail slide having a dovetail groove its length and a unitary knuckle at one end extended out of the front end of the dovetail groove of said door plate;
a jambplate fastened to a doorjamb and having knuckles at one end connected to the knuckle on said dovetail slide by a pivot pin; and a spring means having one end connected to said dovetail slide adjacent to the knuckle on said dovetail slide and an opposite end connected to said end stop on said door plate; and wherein pushing the door with force causes said door plate and said dovetail slide to make a relative movement for permitting the door to be turned on the doorjamb to an opened position; releasing the door causes said door plate to be moved back by said spring means in moving the door from said opened position to a closed position.
