Abstract
ABSTRACT
A tear strip is formed in a web of tear resistant flexible material by forming a pair of spaced parallel weakened tear lines extending along the length of the material to form a narrow tear strip therebetween. A lengthwise tearable adhesive strap is bonded to the outer face of the tear strips and adjacent margins of the web along the length of the weakened tear lines. When pulled outwardly from the outer face of the web, the tear strip acts as a reinforcing backing which causes the tearable adhesive strap to tear with the tear propagating along the weakened tear lines as the strap is pulled.

Description
~25~072 DS6-3638~158 This invention relates to tear strips for wrappers.
Many products are packaged in a wrapper for shipping and handling purposes. Tear strips are commonly provided to facilitate the removal of a wrapper. One such tear strip is widely used to facilitate the removal of a wrapper formed around a cigarette package. This tear strip consists of a strap of plastic material which has a greater tensile strength than the wrapper. The strap is bonded to the inner face of the wrapper and because the wrapper itself is made from a readily tearable material, by pulling on an end of the strap, it is possible to tear the wrapper along the edges of the strap. This tear strip relies upon the fact that the cellophane material from which wrappers are commonly made will tear easily once a tear has been initiated.
In webs of material such as paper in which fibres are randomly oriented, it is not possible to guarantee that the web will tear along a predetermined tear line without substantially weakening the web along a predetermined tear line. If, however, the web is weakened to provide a weakened tear line, the inherent strength of the wrapper will be substantially reduced. For this reason, considerable difficulty has been experienced in providing an e~fective tear strap suitable for use in paper wrappers.
I have found that I can provide a simple and efficient tear strip for a paper wrapper by forming a pair of spaced parallel weakened tear lines along the length of the wrapper and reinforcing the weakened area by applying an adhesive tape along the length of the weakened tear lines to provide initial web strength. By employing as the reinforcing strap, a material which does not have randomly oriented fibres, I facilitate the tearing along the weakened tear --1 , ~ 56~7;~
lines by requiring that the principal tearing activity takes place along the length of the tear strap. According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided in a wrapper which consists of a web of flexible material which is resistent to straight line tear propagation having an inner face and an outer face, the improvement of a tear strip comprising a pair of spaced parallel weakened tear lines extending along a length of the wrapper to form a narrow tear strip therebetween and a lengthwise tearable adhesive strap bonded to said outer face of said web, said strap being bonded to the tear strip and adjacent to margins of the web along the length of the weakened tearlines, said tear strip having a manually engageable end portion at one edge of said web, said tear strip, when pulled outwardly from the outer face of said web acting as a reinforcing backing which causes the tearable adhesive strap to tear with the tear propogating along the weakened tear lines as the strap is pulled so as to permit removal of the tear strap and separation of the wrapper along the length of the tear strap.
The invention will be more clearly understood after reference to the following detailed specification read in conjunction with the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a pictorial view of a paper wrapper constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged detailed view of a portion of the wrapper of Figure l; and Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the removal of the tear strip.
~5607~
With reference to Figure 1 of the drawings, the reference numeral 10 refers generally to a paper wrapper. The wrapper 10 may be made from paper such as craft paper which is commonly to act as a wrapper. Two tear strips 12 and 14 are provided which extend about the perimeter of the wrapper at spaced intervals such that after removal of the tear strips 12 and 14, the wrapper will be separated into an upper tray portion 16, a lower tray portion 18 and a central sleeve like portion 20. The paper web 22 has an outer face 24 and an inner face 26. Spaced parallel weakened tear lines 28 and 30 are formed in the body of the paper web 22. The weakened tear lines 28 and 30 are preferably formed by cutting completely through the thickness of the web over the full length of the tear strip. It will be understood, however, that the weakened tear lines 28 and 30 may be formed by intermittently perforating or otherwise weakening the web to an extent sufficient to ensure that the paper will tear along the weakened tear lines. By forming the weakened tear lines 28 and 30 by cutting completely through the thickness of the web, all risk of incorrect propagation of the tear along the tear lines is eliminated and this is the preferred form of the invention.
A narrow tear strip 32 is formed between the weakened tear lines 28 and 30 and is retained therebetween even when the weakened tear lines 28 and 30 are cut completely through the thickness of the web.
A length of tearable adhesive strap 34 is applied to the outer face 24 of the web so as to extend along the length of the weakened tear lines. The strap 34 is adhesively secured to the strip 32 and to the marginal edge portions 36 and 38 of the web. Notches 40 ~L25S~
are preferably formed at an end of the adhesive strap which extends to the edge 42 of the overlapping portion of the web 22. As shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, when the end portion 42 of the tear strip 32 is pulled outwardly the tearable adhesive strap 36 will tear along tear lines 46 and 48 which are located between the opposed edges of the tear strip 32 and the margins 36 and 38. Because the tearable adhesive strap is made from a plastics material such as scotch tape or a similar strapping material in which the resistance to lengthwise propagation of a tear is minimal, it is possible to remove the tear strip without difficulty. The tensile strength of the untorn adhesive strip may, however, be quite substantial thereby serving to retain the wrapper in its wrapper end configuration during shipping and handling.
When the tear strips 12 and 14 have been removed, the tray like portions 16 and 18 may be used as support trays for use in the displaying of the items which are packaged in the container in use.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the present invention provides a simple and efficient tear strip for use in flexible paper wrappers.
