Description
72~3 SEAL FOR ROW ON APPLICATOR DEVICE
The present invention relates to roll-on applicator devices, such as those used for applying products such as deodorants, perfumes and the like to skin surfacesO More particularly, the invention provides a roll-on applicator devlce with an improved seal to aid in preventing products in containers having roll-on applicators from either evapora-ting or solidifying Roll-on applicators consist of a container having a round applicator ball which is captured by a lip in the neck of the container. the applicator ball is allowed to rotatP
within the container neck, and has some longitudinal move-ment so that product within the container is collected on the surface of the ball and when the ball is rubbed on the skin surface of an individual the product on the ball is transferred onto the skin. Such an applicator device is used in the application of deodorants, perfumes and other toilek preparations. The containers are generally blow molded of a rigid polypropylene, ABS or high density poly-ethylene. the round balls are formed with a reasonably coarse surface so the can collect proauct on the surface, and transfer product from the ball to a skin surface. The ball is snapped into place in the neck and held in place by means of a lip at the end o the neck. A certain amount of longitudinal movement allows the ball to move back rom the lip towards the container where a shoulder acts at least as a partial seal at the bottom of the ball to prevent product escaping from the container when the applicator device is not in use. A cap, usually having a screw attach-mentj fits ovèr the neck and applicator ball to push the applicator ball and partially seal the applicator ball against the shoulder of the neck. This type of sealing generally means that product in the space between the ball and the neck, reerred to as the well, is open to the 7;~78 atmosphere. In certain products evaporation can occur and the product dries out, thus when the applicator device is next used, the product does not easily come out of the con-tainer. Furthermore, it is oten found that this type of seal between the shoulder and the ball at the bottom of the ball, is not always an effective seal, and this permits air into the container which again can cause evaporation which dries up the product, or forms a skin on the top of the product which may prevent the product being properly applied when the applicator device is next used.
The present invention provides a seal at the top of the ball, rather than at the bottom of the ball, which avoids the problem of the product drying around the ball in the so-called well. The present invention also provides two lS seals, one at the top and one at the bottom of the ball to ensure that the product in the container does not evaporate.
The present invention provides in a roll-on appli-cator device for products, such as deodorants and the like, including a container having a round applicator ball captur-~0 ed by a lip in a neck of a container, the round applicatorball adapted to rotate in the neck and have limited longitu-dinal movement to permit transfer of product from the con-tainer, the applicator ball adapted to provide at least a partial seal when pressed in towards the container, and ~5 having a cap adapted to fit over the applicator ball and neck and press the applicator ball in towards the container to partially seal the applicator ball in the container, the improvement comprising a sealing means forming part of the cap to seal between the lip of the neck and the applicator ball.
In embodiments of the present invention, the cap preferably has a screw attachment to the container and the sealing means is a ring having a sharp circular edge to press against the applicator ball, the ring sealing between the applicator ball and the lip of the neck when the cap is screwed firmly onto the contalner. In another embodimenk the sealing means is a ring having a contoured surface to rest on an area of the applicator ball,-the ring sealing between the applicator ball and the lip of the neck when the cap is screwed firmly onto the container, the ring adapted to press the applicator ball in towards the con-tainer. In yet a further embodiment the ring has two sharp circular edges to press against the applicator ball.
In yet another embodiment o the present invention, the ring extends over the lip to support the lip in a fixed position and avoid distortion of the lip when the cap is screwed firmly onto khe container. The sealing means in one embodiment is fitted to an insert in the cap and has a ring extending downwards with a circular end surface to seal between the lip of the neck and the applicator ball.
In drawings which illustrate the embodiments of the invention, Fig. 1 is a side view, partially in section, of a roll-on applicator device known in the prior art.
Fig. 2 is a sectional side view of a cap fitted to the neck of an applicator device showing the top sealing system of the present invention.
Figs. 3 and 4 show partial sactional views of a top sealing ring between an applicator ball and the lip of the neck of the container.
Fig. 5 is a partial sectional side view of a cap fitted to the neck of a roll-on applicator device showing another type of seal ring according to the present invention.
Fig. 6 is a partial sectional side view of a cap itted to the neck of a roll-on applicator device showing an insert fitted inside the cap, the insert having a seal ring according to another embodiment of the present invention.
Reerring now to the drawings, Fig. 1 shows a con-tainer 10 having a neck 11 which captures a round applicator ~2~7Z'7~
ball 12 by means of a lip 13 at the end of the neck 11.Adjacent the lip 13 of the neck 11 is a parallel section 14 followed by an adjoining tapered seckion 15. The ball 12 has longitudinal movement as shown in plain and dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the space between the ball 12, lip 13, parallel section 14 and tapered section 15 is called a well l When the ball is pushed in towards the container 10 a circular contact is made between the ball 12 and the tapered section 15 -to act as a partial seal. A screw thread 17 is provided at the base of the neck 11 for attachment of a cap. The roll-on applicator device shown in Fig 1 is of the device known in the prior art.
Fig. 2 illustrates a cap 20 which fits over the neck 11 of the applicator deyice and has an internal screw thread 15 21 to engage with the screw thread 17 on the neck 11. A
small central ring 22 extending downwards inside surface at top of cap 20 pushes the ball 12 in towards the container 10, ensuring that the surface of the ball 12 touches a shoulder of the tapered section 15 to form a partial seal between the ball 20 12 and the tapered section 15. Such a ring 22 exists in the caps used today with the roll-on applicator devices. However, due to variations in tolerances in the manufacture of con-tainers, it is often found that the prodl~ct in the container leaks around the ball because the seal is by no means a per-fect seal. Furthermore, product remains in the well 16 be-tween the ball, lip 13, parallel section 14 and tapered section 15. Because this product is open to air through the space between the lip 13 and the ball 1?, it can evaporate and dry out causing a problem of applying product from the container when the applicator device is next used.
The preset invention provides a top seal ring 23 also extending downwards from the lower surface of the top of the cap 20. The top seal ring is larger in diameter and concentric with the small central ring 22 and as shown in Fig. 2 has a sharp circular edge 24 or feathered edge and an outwardly tapered surface 25 which is positioned to seal

2~7~78 between the ball 12 and the lip 13 when the cap 20 is screw-ed onto the container 10. this top seal ring 23 presses against the ball 12 and provides a positive seal between the ball and the lip 13. Thus, product retained in the well 16 is not open to the air because this top seal prevents air passing between the lip and the ball and, furthermore, it also provides a double seal because the lower seal between the ball 12 and the tapered section 15 remains the same.
The material of the cap 20 is generally thicker than the material of the container 10. The top seal ring 23 as shown in Fig. 2, is integral with the cap 20 and must be suffi-ciently rigid to seal, but also have sufficient flexibility to prevent distortion of the lip 13 and neck 11. The top seal ring 23 is arranged so that when the cap 20 is screwed onto the container 10 the seal is made without distortion occurring to the lip 13 and the remainder of the neck.
further example of a top seal ring 23 is shown in Fig. 3 wherein the base of the top seal ring 23 has a con-toured surace 30 to fit over and retain the lip 13 in its position together with a circular eathered edge 31 extend-ing down between the lip 13 and the ball 12 to provide a seal. This configuration prevents distortion of the lip and yet provides a satisfactory seal between the lip at the ball 12. another example of a seal is illustrated in Fig. 3 wherein the bottom surface of the top seal ring 23 has a first circular edge 40 which extends down between the lip 13 and the ball 12 to provide a first seal, and a second circular edge 41 to act as a second seal on the ball 12.
Fig. 5 illustrates another arrangement of a cap 20 having a top seal ring 23 extending down from the bottom surface of the top of the cap, the bottom edge 50 of the top seal ring 23 is contoured to mate with the ball 12 and has a circular feathered edge 51 which seals between the ball ~2 and the lip 13. By pressing against the ball 12 over a wider area, the top seal ring 23 removes the necess-ity of having a small central ring 22 as shown in Fig. 2.Another embodiment of the invention is shown in Fig. 6 wherein a standaxd existing type of cap 20~ with a small central ring 22 to push against the ball and seal in the manner known in the prior art, has added to it an insert 60 which fits against the bottom surface of the top of the cap 20 and has a top seal ring 23 attached to the insert 60 having a sharp circular or feathered edge 24 to seal between the lip 13 and the ball 12. this insert 60 permits existing stocks of caps to be modified so that a top seal is provided between the ball 12 and the lip 13. Furthermore, this embodiment permits the insert 60 and top seal ring 23 to be made of a more flexible matexial than the cap 20 to provide more flexibility and a better seal.
It will be understood that various changes may be made to the top sealing means for the roll-on applicator devlce as disclosed herein, without departing from the present invention which is limited only by the scope of the following claims.
