Abstract

A B S T R A C T

This invention combines the exhaust pipe, tailpipe and muffler presently in use to silence exhaust gases of internal combustion engines into one continuous unit. The use of two pipes, one of which fits into the other such that gases may pass alternatively through the inner pipe as well as in the area between the two pipes and with the inner pipe having incorporated into it various size openings at particular locations as well as inner and outer baffles, creates the necessary expansion, resonance and spit chambers to effectively muffle or silence the sound of the gases while conducting same to the atmosphere.
To install the unit on any vehicle using an internal combustion engine,the unit can be bent to the desired shape and installed in the usual manner using clamps and hangers without reducing the effectiveness of the unit.
This system standardizes muffler exhaust systems, reduces manufacturingand storage costs and because of its simplistic design and ease of manufacture can be economically produced using other materials, particularly stainless steel. The unique design allows for a more uniform heat distribution and less entrapment of moisture which decreases rusting thereby prolonging the life of the component.

Description

~7 ~ 3 This invention relates to an integrated muffler and exhaust system which incorporates two pipes, one of which fits into the other and is so modified by a series of openin~s and baffles that the entire pipe acts as a muffler to silence the noises oi the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine as well as conducting these gases to the atmosphere.
In nearly all cases, the method employed to silence exhaust noises of internal combustion engines consist of a separate muffler which is the silencing unit interconnected by an exhaust pipe to the engine and by a tail pipe to the atmosphere. The muffler is a relatively bulky unit requiring numerou~ manufacturing processes to produce as well as being built to a high number of confi&urations to fit the numerous makes and models of vehicle~ on the marketO This involves a high level of inventory to be carried resulting in higher costsO The de3ign of present muffler axhaust systems creates an uneven heat buildup in the system and causes excess entrapment of moisture resulting in accelerated ru~ting o~ the metal9 This invention improves the present system of a separate muffler and exhaust pipe by utili~ing tuo pipes one of which fi-ts within the othar and both of which are uniform throu~hout their lengths to serve a dual purpose, to conduct exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine to the atmosphere while at the same time silencing the noises craated by these ga3es. This is accomplished by modifying only the inner pipe with a series of openings ~nd baifles which make the gases alternatively pass throu~h the inner pipe and in the area between the two pipes creating the necessary expansion and resonance chamber~ to effectivaly reduce the noises of the ga~esO
This invention requires only a small number of configurations and si~esthereby ~tandardi2ing the muffler exhaust systems compared t~ present practices. The standardi~ation, ease of manuiacture and smaller inventory levels that have to be main.ained will reduce ov~rall costs ~ubstantially as well as allowing for the use of stainless steel in place of regular mild steel at a marketable price range.
This design is an improvement over current devices in that the metal is less prone to rusting since the unit will distribute heat more evenly over its length as well as entrapping less moisture in the systemO

Referring to the drawinp, the inteBraLed muffler e~haust unit 20 consiæts of an inner pipe 21 located within an outer pipe 22 creatin~ passage 23 in inner pipe 21 and pas~age 24 between inner pipe 21 and outer pipe 220 Located within innor pipe 21 are a number of openings designated by 25 and 26 and baffles 27. Located between inner pipe 21 and outer pipe 72 are baffles 28 and openings 29~ Inlet end of the unit is indicated by 3~ and outlet end by 31. Areas 32 and 33 indicate resonance and expansion chambers.
The exhaust system 20 which has been prebent on a pipe bending appaxatus to fit the particular vehicle is attached at inlet end 30 to the exhaust manifold of an internal combustion engine by a clamp or an adapter. ~`~
portion of the ga3as enter area 32 which acts a~ a resonance chamber within the inner pipe 21 and a portion of gases enter area 33 ~hich acts as an expansion chamberO Baffles 27 and 28 respactively contain the gases in areas 32 and 33. Openings ~S allow tha gases to enter passages 23 and 24 at particular points along the length of the pipe. Numerous small openings 29 are located in a number of baffles to reduce high frequency sounds.
This general arr~ngements of openings and baffles are repeated throughout the length of the pipe~ The exhaust gases travel through the pipe alternatively through passage 23 in the inner pipe and through pa~sage 24, the area between the two pipes and exit the pipe at 31~ This arrangement ef~ectively creates numerous resonance and expansion chambers l~hich silence the noise~ of the exhaust gases; the arrangement is such that the same efEect ls achieved regardless of ~hich w~y the gases travel through the pipe.
The inner pipe is kept in position relative to the outer pipe by the baffles ln Figure 2 or the extanded corrugations as shown in Figure 1 an~ will remain in position even ~Jhen bent to variou~ configurations to fit underneath an automobile or other vehicle, Since this arrangement is repeated many times over the length of the pipe any section of pipe can be used with the same eEfect.

Claims (5)

  1. The embodiment of an invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:

    l. An integrated muffler and exhaust system for internal combustion engines consisting of two pipes or tubes, the smaller of which fits inside the larger and is of a diameter to divide the cross-sectional area of the larger pipe approximately in half such that exhaust gases can pass through the inner pipe as well as through the area between the two pipes; further that the inner pipe has incorporated into it a series of various sized openings and baffles repeated over its entire length such that the gases are alternatively passing through the inner pipe and in the area between the two pipes, effectively reducing the noises of the gases to an acceptable level.
  2. 2. An integrated muffler and exhaust system for internal combustion engines as claimed in claim l consisting of a continuous uniform pipe acting as a conduit to conduct gases from the engine to the atmosphere while at the same time silencing the noises of the gases by creating the necessary resonance and expansion chambers.
  3. 3. An integrated muffler and exhaust unit as claimed in claim 1 in which the inner pipe is corrugated having certain corrugations extended to close off the inner pipe and various corrugations extended to fit against the outer pipe to create the necessary baffles and to align the inner pipe co-axially with the outer pipe and to maintain this relationship when the unit is bent to fit the shape of the underside of an automobile or other vehicle.
  4. 4. An integrated muffler and exhaust unit as claimed in claim l in which the locations of the openings and baffles within the two pipes are arranged in such a manner that the same effect of silencing the gases are achieved regardless of which direction the gases pass through the unit.
  5. 5. An integrated muffler exhaust unit as claimed in claims 17 2 and 3 in which the ease and economics of manufacture as compared to other systems is considerably reduced such that stainless steel can be used and sold at a popular price.
