Abstract
Abstract of the Disclosure A dental composition having natural ingredients is very useful for combating superficial dental and periodontal diseases, and halitosis. Use of the composition provides fresher breath and mouth, cleaner gums and whiter teeth. The dental composition is composed of calcium carbonate, betel nut, ginger, alum, pepper, salt, myrobalan and camphor.
Description
~133831 This invention relates to a dental composition having naturzl ins_edients.
The dental compogition is ve y useful for fighting supe~ficial dental and perio-dontal diseases, and halitosis (oral malodour) originating from the oral cavity.
The composition is also effective in halting tooth decay with concomitant relief of pain.
The dental composition works by stimulating the cells of the tissues in the mouth and by killing bactEria. According to Dr. C. T. Peterson, a periodon-tist of London, ~ntario, "~inety-eisht percent of the people of Amsrica have oral disease" (Prevention, p.ll7, 5zpt., 1973). Further, Dr. Michael Lerner, a dent~st of Lexington, Kentucky, U.S.A. writes "Ninety-five percent of the people of America have inflamed gums, and that means most A~ericans have some desree of bad breath" (Ref. W. Gottlieb, Prevention, p. 72, Sept., 15eO). Gottlieb further writes in the same article, "Alcohol-containins mouthwashes cause inflammation resulting in bad breath". Finally, according to C. McCarthy, (~ashincton Post, Nov. 10, 1974) "the averaSe r~orth-American mouth is a disaster area with sick teeth and sums beins one of the most costly diseases affecting the public".
The author cites some awesome statistics, e.g."24 out of 25 6-year olds have suffered dental disease". At the same time, ~about 35 billion a year is spent on dental work and 3120 million on toothbrushPs". The author asks, "If people spend so much money on their teeth and mouths, why are the dental stati,'ics so bad ?"
The dental composition of this invention comprises aDout 30,* to 80,; cf calcium carbonate, about 10~ to 60~ of betel nut, about 1~ to 20~ of ginger, about 1~,~ to 25~ of alum, about 1-~ to 20~ pepper, about 1" to 25~ Df salt, aoout 5~ to 50~ myrobalan, and about 1~ to lDC,' czmFhor.
A pre~erred dental composition of this invent~on comprises about S0~ to 70~ of calcium carbonate, about 10~ to 20~,~ of b~tel nut, abGut 1~ to S~ of ginger, about 3,~ to 10~ of alum, about 2~ to 8p of black pepper, about 1-,~ to 5-~
of salt, 2bout 5~ to lS~. of my~obal~n, and about 1~ to S~ of camphor.
The dental compocition can be used as a dental powder, or formulated to form a dPntrifrice (tooth~aste), mouth~aâh, 1O2Ynges, tabtets, chewins sumâ, garsle or spray. Use as a dent21 powder is preferred. In additiGn, oth~r ing~e-lB -1- , 113~83~
dients can be incorporatsd into the composition, for example flavoring agents, antibacterial agents and the like. A preferred flavoring agent is peppermint (about 0.01~ to 5~ of the composition).
The following ingredients are used in the form of dry powder sr granular forms, as is commercially available: calcium carbonate or chalk; dried ginger in any form; alum or aluminum sulfats; pepper; common salt, such as rock salt or sea salt; and camphor (natural or synthetic). Betel Nut is obtained as a nut and is as specified on pages 130-133 in INDIAN MATERIA ME~I~A by A. K. ~adkarni, Third Edition, Vol. 1, 1954, Pub. Popular Book Depot, Bombay 7, lNDIA.
Myrobalan is obtained as the dried whole seed with the fruit and is as specified on pages 1205-1210 in INDIAN MATeRIA ME~ICA, Dy A. K. Nadkarni, Third Edition, Vol. 1, 1954, Pub. Popular Book Dspot, ~ombay 7, INDIA. The flavoring agent psppermint includes peppermint, brandy mint, lamb mint, and dried leaves and flowering tops of Mentha piperita L. or the volatile oil, tarnin, resin or gum thereof. When used as a dental powder, and for the best results, about 0.25 to 1.0 gram of the dental composition is massaged with a clean index finger on gums and teeth for about one to two minutes, then penetrated between teeth with a toothbrush before rinsing the mouth with water.
The dental powder should be used at least twice daily (after breakfast and bsfore going to bed). It is also an excellent product for cleaning the tongue: "Tongue-brushing is the most effective method of decreasing breath odour~ (J. Tonzetich, J. Periodontol., July 1972). It can also be used for cleaning dantuses or false tee~h.
~y regular use of the dental powder (massaging on gums and teeth with a clean index finger, penetrating between teeth and brushing on the tongue with a toothbrush) one can control bad breath very effectively and maintain excellent teeth and gums. By thoroughly mixing with an appropriate amount of water, the tental composition of this invention can be used as lo~enges, tablets, aentrifrice (toothpaste), mouthwash, chewing gum, gargle or spray for oral hygiene. The following specific examples are illustrative of the nature of the present invention, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto. The compositions are prepared in the usual manner as 113383i described above and all amounts of the various insredients are by percent weight (gram) unless other~ise stated.

Calcium carbonate, ginger, black pepper, salt (rommon salt, sea salt or rock salt), alum and camphor in dry powder or 3ranular forms were obtained 23 from local dealers of Montreal, ~uebec. Peppermint in concentrated liquid form or dry powder form was also obtained from a local dealer. ~f required, the above ingredients can be roasted znd dried in the vacuum or ordinary oven.
~etel nut, and rr~yrobalan dried whole seeds and fruits respectively were obtained from dealers in Tor~nto, Cntario. These are abundantly gro~n in India and neigh~oring countries. These nuts and fruits werr cleaned anc washed with warm water, dried and roasted in the oven at ambient temperature af lQ0 to 140 Cfor 1 to 3 hours. Thereafter, these were orushed into small pieces and then pulveri~ed first throush # 64 and then through ~1 27 screens of Ducon Micro-pulverizer. Salt, as usPd herein, rneans sodium chloririe.
~0 All powder and granular rnaterials were then propartionately added (Trible I~, mixed a~d thoroughly blended in a rotary electric mixer. Pepperrr, int lliquid or powder) was added durin~ the process of final rnixing. Final mixing .
of each batch was continued atleast for 30 minutes. After the final mixing, the powder was asain passed thrcugh ~ 27 screen of Ducon Micropulverizer.
