Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

A towed fishing net is disclosed, which net includes a fish collection chamber or bag having an elongate slit in a suitable position. To the edges of this slit is attached a sliding clasp fastener for opening and closing the bag.
The attachment of the fasteners eliminates the use of stringers or ropes for tying the bag end.

Description

This invention relates to a fishing gear, more parti-cularly to a towed net for catching a school of fish in midwater or pelagic trawling.
The term towed net generall~ includes o~ter trawls, seine trawls, small trawl nets, beach seine, sardine drag nets and the like.
The basic construction of these fishing nets comprises a belly section, a bag contiguous thereto and a towing bridle connecting the net to a fishing boat. As the boat moves, the water is strained through the meshes of a moving net, leaving the fish in the bag. With most of the prior art towed nets, it was necessary to tie the bag end with a string or rope when setting the net in fishing position and to untie the same for removal of the fish caught. This operation was not only time-consuming and tedious, but had a urther drawback in that the mesh of the net at areas where tied and squeezed becomes smaller and tends to catch mud and other foreign mat-ters, resulting in increased water resistance. In such a -situation, necessity would arise for adjusting the engine of the boat f~equently to cope with varied load of t~e net. In some instances, the squeezed net portion would become completel~ ~`
plugged up, causing the death o the fish in the bag.
It is thereore a primar~ object of the present inven tion to provide an improved towed net which will eliminate the above-mentioned difficulties of the prior art device.
More specifically, the invention provides an improved towed net which incorporates an opening and closing means whereby the necessity for -tying and ~untying o the bag net ~ . ~ .

is completely precluded, and hence the fishing operation is greatly facilitated.
According to the invention, there is provided a towed fishing net comprises a belly section and a bag contiguous thereto. The bag includes a top webbing, side webbings, an end webbing and a bottom webbing. The towed fish~ng net ~urther comprises means for opening and closing the bag along an elongated slit formed therein.
These and other features of the invention will become manifest upon referring to the following description and the accompanying drawings which illustrate by way of example certain preferred embodiments which the invention may assume in practice.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a towed fishing net constructed in accordanc~ with a preferred embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the net, showing another embodiment;
Fig. 3`is a similar view but showing a further embodi-ment; and Fig. 4 is another similar view but showing still another embodiment.
Referring now to the drawings and Fig. 1 in particular, there is shown a preferred form o towed net according to the invention, the net structure being generally designated by the reference numeral 10 and comprising ~ beIly section 11 and a bag 12. The belly section 11 comprises a main webbing 13 secured to and supported by a headrope 14 and a footrope :

15 respectively, which are each extended substantially in arcuate fashion and provided with floats 16 formed like beads at spaced intervals in the well known manner. The headrope 14 and the footrope 15 are spread apart by means not shown also in a manner well known in the art.
A bag or fish collection chamber 12 is generally rectangular in shape, and comprises a top webbing 17, side webbings 18,18', an end webbing 19 and a bottom ~ebbing 20, all webbings being secured to and set in place by a pair of substantially U-shaped beam members 21 and 22 ~hich are con-nected to the headrope 14 and the footrope 15, respectively, such that as the belly 11 is spread and expanded with move-ment of the boat, the ish enters through an opening 23 at the ~orward end of the bag 12 opposite to the end webbing 19 or the after end of the bag 12 and is trapped in the bag 12 in a manner well known.
In accordance with the principles of the invention, there is provided means 24 for opening and closing the bag 12, which means comprises a sliding clasp fastener F compris-; 20 ing a pair of oppositely disposea support tapes Fl, F2, carrying along their respective one longitudinal edges respective ro~s of interlocking fastener eIements F3, and a slider F4 or coupling and uncoupling the same. The fas-tener elements F3 and the slider F4 are made preerably of anti-corrosive materials such as plastics or metals treated with an anti-corrosive coating.
According to one preferred ~mbodiment as shown in Fig. 1, the o]pening and closing means 24 is attached to ~ilD'7~

the edges of an elongate slit 25 extending along the border-line between the top webbing 17 and the end webbing 19.
Fig. 2 shows another embodiment in which the slit 25 for attachment of the means 24 is formed in the end webbing 19 along a center line extending substantially at a right angle to the longitudinal axis of the bag 12.
Fig. 3 shows a further embodiment in which the slit 25 for attachment of the means 24 is formed in the top webbing 17 along a line extending substantially in parallel with the longitudinal axis of the bag 12.
Fig. 4 shows still another embodiment in which the slit 25 for attachment of the means 24 is formed in and along the borderline between the end webbing 19 and the bottom webbing 20.
The advantages of the towed net 10 const~ucted in accordance with the invention are as follows:
1. The bag 12 can be opened and closed with utmost ease and at high speed by simple manipulation of the sliding clasp fastener F.
2. Plugging up of the bag 12 with mud or the like is eliminated which would otherwise require frequent readjust-ment of the engine of the boat or cause the fish to die.
3. Excess of fish can be easily removed from the slit 25 by opening the fastaner F when the total weight of the fish caught in the bag 12 exceeds the allowable limit of hauling.
4. The bag 12 can be maintained in neatly closed posture. -~'7~

Although various minor modifications may be suggested by thos~ versed in the art, it should be understood that we wish to embody within the scope of the patent warranted hereon, all such embodiments as reasonably and properly come within the scope of our contribution to the art.
