<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>

STAAR DEVELOPMENT COMPANY - S.A. - BRUSSELS - BELGIUM
SOUND SYSTEM FOR SLIDES.
There are many coupling systems on the market forming a permanent or semi-permanent unit of a slide support with a sound recording support. These systems are often either too expensive or too inefficient.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide
simple, economical and reliable means for coupling one or a series of slides with a support for sound recordings and forming a very flat assembly which can, while protecting the elements, present a unit which can be easily manipulated, stored or stored and whose elements it contains, can be easily exploited.
In addition, simple means will be proposed. To access, read and interpret the audio and optical information while keeping the elements protected.
In addition, means are provided for synchronization when multiple slide holders
and related multiple record carriers are used.
To achieve these goals, we essentially propose
means for holding a support for one or more slides
and a medium for one or a series of sound recordings, in the same plane, in a common flat envelope; adequate openings are provided in the envelope to access the supports for their motion, reading and operation, while
leaving them trapped in their common mating envelope.
According to the proposed goals, the support of sound recordings is essentially realized by a flexible or semi-rigid disc of very small thickness.
The means proposed for reading and interpreting the audio and optical information are essentially produced by a mechanism in which the common envelope can be placed in a fixed position allowing the projection or the visualization of the optical image.
The drive elements of the disc carrying the sound recordings, the read head and the drive elements of the slide support are brought into contact automatically, or by manual operation, after the envelope has been inserted into its fixed active position, and are removed automatically, or by a manual operation, before the extraction of the envelope; the latter can itself carry the elements allowing the locking and the bringing together or the spacing of certain elements of the mechanism.
In order to clearly understand the invention, the following non-limiting examples will be described.
In FIG. I, there is shown, from the front and in profile, an envelope I produced by two sheets of plastic material
2 and 3, which can be partly stamped or thermoformed, making chambers 4 and 5, the sheets being superimposed and welded so as to leave openings
6 and 7 by which a disc 8 carrying a series of slides 9, and a disc 10 carrying the sound information, can be thus introduced into their housings.
To trap the supports in their housings,
one can, for example, thermoform in the surface 2, small protrusions 2 ′ yes will slightly obstruct the conduits of the passages.
FIG. 2 gives an example of a common envelope
for a single slide II which can be introduced into a housing 12 and thus be coupled to a disc 10 carrying the sound recordings.
The example of a disc 8 carrying slides
on its periphery is very well known and widespread on the market. Notches 13 allow the disc to rotate so
bringing the slides to the angular positions required for projection one by one, or for stereoscopic viewing of the slides.
With a view to exploiting the optical and sound information carried by the media trapped in the common envelope, openings or windows are provided therein.
A window 14 allows access to the notches 13 of the disc 8 and an opening 15 allows the centering thereof.
Openings 16 and 17 allow the projection or stereoscopic viewing of the slides.
An opening 18 allows centering and driving of the disc 10 and a window 19 allows access to the sound recordings carried by it.
Other openings may possibly be provided for marks, locks, etc.
FIG. 3 gives an example from the front and from the side, of an apparatus allowing the projection or the visualization of the slides, and the reproduction of the sound recordings carried by the supports maintained in the common envelope which ensures permanently, their coupling and their protection.
We see at 20 a box formed by two halves 21-22, in the middle of these two halves, over substantially the entire height, slides or rails 23-24 can receive and guide the edges 25 and 26 of the envelope I when that -this is introduced into the device through an opening 27.
When the envelope, completely inserted, abuts in its active position, the openings 16 and 17, and the slides that they reveal, are in a centered position, facing or in relation to the optical elements carried by the housing , for example a magnifying glass 28 and a frosted glass diffusing the light which penetrates through an opening 29 in the part 22 of the housing 20.
At this time, the disc 10 carrying the information
<EMI ID = 1.1>
to a flywheel 30 whose axis rotates in a socket integral with the bottom 22. A motor 31, powered by batteries not shown, drives the flywheel 30 in rotation by means of a belt 32.
A part 33, forming a chassis or control lever, and on which various centering elements are mounted. drive and reading, can pivot at 34 so that it can, manually, for example by the end 35 protruding from the housing, make it take essentially 2 positions, one, completely freeing any element which could obstruct the passage of the envelope to the introduction or extraction thereof, the other position, bringing into contact or in relation, different elements with the supports trapped in the envelope.
On the part 33 are mounted the drive elements of the optical discs, for example a lever 36 pivots about a fixed axis 37 which comes to center the disc 8 while engaging
in the central hole when the elements are brought together.
This lever 36 has a branch 38 which can be actuated manually. A lug 39, also part of the part
36 can then engage in the notches 13 of the discs 8 in order to drive the latter into different angular positions.
A return spring 40 returns the lever 36 to its initial position.
<EMI ID = 2.1>
to center the sound disc and make it integral with the drive wheel 30, for example, by a shoulder 42 of the axis 41 which will wedge the disc 10 against the flywheel 30.
On the part 33 is also mounted an axis 43 on which can slide a reading head .44 provided with a needle
45 coming to cooperate with a groove of sound modulations of the disc 10 when the chassis or lever 33 is placed in its active position.
When the viewing and hearing of the recordings are finished, the part 33 can be pulled manually, in the direction of the arrow 47, against the spring 46, in its separated position, and the centering axes 37 and 41, Thus, the read head 44 is spaced from the supports and the envelope can be removed without obstacles.
To synchronize the slides with the recordings relating thereto, it is for example possible, as is known, to initialize the start of the audio message when the first slide in a series is projected or viewed.
At the end of each message, an audible signal signals to the user that he must, manually, choose the next slide, and so on.
Silences can also be detected, i.e. unsaved parts between messages. At this time, we can initialize the start of the drive motor of the disc 10 when positioning the first slide.
When the first audible message is finished, signaled by a longer or shorter silence, the motor 31 can be stopped, and it is only when the lever 36 is again actuated to present the next slide, that the motor
31 will be fed again until the next silence.
For this purpose one can for example close a small switch when the lever 36 reaches the bottom of the travel which will act thus on an electronic or electro-mechanical system which will maintain the power supply to the motor as long as a silence, an unregistered part or a determined signal will not give the order to stop the engine.
Thus, the user can continue to watch as long as he pleases, a determined view, even if
the related audio message has already ended.
It will not be until the next slide is selected that the audio message will continue.
