<EMI ID=9.1>

<EMI ID=70.1>

<EMI ID=72.1>

The chemical formula of the thermosetting resin composition according to the invention can vary between
wide limits depending on its use. The weight ratio of maleimide compound to alkenylphenyl compound can generally vary from 1: 1 to 300: 1,
the preferred range varying from 5: 1 to 200: 1. If the quantity
of maleimide compound employed is below the above limits, the resin composition as used in the form of a varnish will have an abbreviated pot life, and the cured product will possess lower thermal stability or resistance to heat. less heat, while if this amount rises above the above mentioned limits, the resin composition will exhibit
decrease in its curing rate and will exhibit such poor curing characteristics
that the cured product may fail to achieve the desired mechanical strength.
A thermosetting resin composition according to the present invention may contain a polymerizable unsaturated compound, besides the maleimide type compound and the alkenylphenyl type compound. The term "polymerizable unsaturated compound" as used herein refers to vinyl monomers, radical polymerizable unsaturated polymers and radical polymerization unsaturated oligomers. As specific examples of vinyl monomers, mention may be made of styrene, substituted styrenes comprising their substi - <EMI ID = 69.1>
acrylic and its esters, methacrylic acid and its
esters, acrylamide, glycidyl acrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, divinylbenzene, divinyl-
toluene, diallyl phthalate, triallyl cyanurate, tribromophenylallyl ether and the like. As examples of the radical polymerization unsaturated polymers and the radical polymerization unsaturated oligomers, there may be mentioned a phthalate prepolymer.
diallyl, polypentadiene, polychloroprene, polybutadiene and unsaturated polyester; polymers and
the above-mentioned oligomers modified by the addition of styrene, maleic acid or epoxy resin; cyclic oligomers, such as dicyclopentadiene and dicyclododecatriene, terpenoid compounds and the like. These polymerizable unsaturated compounds can be used alone or in combination.
The amount of polymerizable unsaturated compound used depends on whether it is a monomer, a polymer
or an oligomer. However, the ratio of the combined weight of the maleimide-type compound and the alkenylphenyl-type compound to the weight of the polymerizable unsaturated compound can generally vary from 1:50 to 200: 1, with the preferred range varying from 1:20 to 100: 1. If the amount of polymerizable unsaturated compound used is greater than the above limits, the cured product will exhibit a lowering of heat resistance and storage stability; while if this amount is less than the above limits, the fluidity of the product. resin composition will be too weak to exhibit good molding properties.
The thermosetting resin composition according to the invention can be cured by the application of heat. Although there is no particular limit to be taken
Considering the curing temperature, the preferred range of curing temperatures is 30 to 300 [deg.] C. The product can also be cured by exposure to radiation, such as ultraviolet rays,
<EMI ID = 70.1>
Depending on the purpose of its use, the thermosetting resin composition according to the invention can either be mixed with one or more additional components, or be dissolved in an organic solvent. More specifically, if the resin composition is to be used as a molding material, one or more inorganic fillers can be incorporated therein, such as silica, silica glass, clay, aluminum hydroxide, asbestos, glass fibers, mica, gypsum, kaolin, cement, talc, zinc white, graphite, magnesite, molybdenum disulphide, titanium white, silica sand, black carbonate, barium sulfate and calcium carbonate.
In addition, a conventional flame retardant such as organic brominated compounds, antimony compounds and phosphorus compounds can be added to the resin composition,
for the purpose of giving it flame-retardant properties.
If the resin composition is to be used under

good electrical and mechanical properties and it can lead to improved workability efficiency due to its good moldability and fast hardening. Therefore,
the composition in question can be used in a very large number of industrial applications, and it can be used, for example, for the manufacture of impregnating resins, adhesives, coatings
and powder paints, as also molding materials. Further, when used for the vulcanization of rubber, the resin composition in question can exert excellent effects of crosslinking and accelerating vulcanization, thereby imparting improved characteristics, such as very high resistance to heat. -thermal degradation, vulcanized rubber. Therefore, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the thermoset resin composition: breakable in accordance with the invention constitutes a material
of exceptional quality with a broad spectrum of utility.
The present invention will now be further illustrated with the aid of the examples which follow. In these examples, all parts and percentages are by weight unless otherwise specified.
