<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>

<EMI ID=4.1>

"Roller screen for cleaning agricultural products,
particularly sugar beets "The invention relates to a roller grid for cleaning agricultural products, in particular sugar beets, comprising a number of rollers with parallel axes arranged one behind the other and each formed of a series of discs spaced apart on a common central axis, the arrangement being such that the neighboring rollers interlock like combs of which the discs would be teeth, as well as a cleaning device for removing soil, leaves, etc. intervals between the discs of the rollers.
Agricultural products that have just been harvested, especially when they are torn from the ground, are generally more or less dirty - depending on the weather and the nature of the soil in which they were cultivated -
and loaded with earth, pebbles, leaves, etc. which must be got rid of sooner or later. To carry out at least one preliminary cleaning of products which are then processed in the factory, in particular sugar beets, roller screens are used, which can be mounted on mobile devices, which clearly increases their interest, by which agricultural products can be cleared of most unwanted material on the spot, when it is loaded onto a truck, trailer or other means of transport, thus reducing transport costs as well as the costs of storage and handling in the factories.
A prerequisite for a roller screen to perform this preliminary cleaning job properly is that the roller discs and the gaps between the discs remain sufficiently clean.
and cleared. In the case of agricultural products which are torn from a loamy soil or from another soil with a tendency to stick, the earth and the root fragments which adhere to the discs very quickly cause clogging, which is still favored by leaves, especially in the case of beets. To obtain satisfactory cleaning of agricultural products,
therefore, the discs and their gaps must be cleaned at the same time.
Various devices are known in the art by means of which the gaps between the discs can be kept free. One of the known devices comprises, on part of the discs of the rollers, elements which protrude into the gaps between the discs of neighboring rollers and which must thus keep these gaps clear. However, it turned out that these cleaning elements are very easily damaged by stones; in many cases, such damage is accompanied in addition to a deformation of the disc on which the cleaning element is attached, so that not only the last one must be replaced but also
the deformed disc, which entails significant costs.
In another known system, each roller is combined with a fixed cleaning comb, the teeth of which protrude into the gaps between the discs of the roller. However, practice shows that an accumulation of soil, leaves, tangles of fragments forms very quickly.
root etc. in front of the teeth; such an accumulation of course ends up causing clogging but it also constitutes a kind of brake for the discs, which leads to the overload of the drive of the grid and / or to the tearing or deformation of the teeth of the comb or even the entire comb.
The invention provides a roller grid of the type defined at the beginning, but on which the intervals between the discs can be kept free reliably, whatever the nature (silty or stony, for example) of the soil on which the agricultural products to be cleaned were collected.
According to an essential characteristic of the invention, the cleaning device comprises, under at least one roller, a rotary body whose axis of rotation is parallel to the axis of rotation of the roller and on which is supported, for each interval between two disks adjacent to the roller,
a cleaning squeegee which rotates with the rotating body and which passes through a corresponding gap between two discs of the roller.
When each roll exposed to a particular risk of fouling is thus combined with such a rotating cleaning body mounted under the roll, the various scrapers are caused, during the rotation of the roll and the simultaneous rotation of the cleaning body, to pass through. the corresponding intervals between the discs of the roller, so that the gunk (earth, clods of earth, tangles of root fragments, leaves and so
immediately) that may stick to the discs or is stuck between them is removed with certainty. Like the rotating body carrying the squeegees
cleaning is mounted under the roller for which it is intended, the large stones that stand. possibly found between the agricultural products do not risk damaging the squeegees.
According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the rotary body is a shaft capable of being driven in rotation and at the periphery of which is fixed a number of support arms
equal to the number of intervals between the discs of the corresponding roll,
at the free ends of which - each capable of protruding into a corresponding gap - are supported the cleaning scrapers. The cleaning device for the gaps between the discs of the rollers can thus be relatively simple and the space under the rolls can be kept relatively clear.
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will emerge more clearly from the following description of several non-limiting exemplary embodiments, as well as from the appended drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic longitudinal section of part of a roller grid according to the invention; Figure 2 is a partial section taken along the line II-II of Figure 1; and Figures 3 and 4 are sectional details (along the line III-III de'la figure 2 but on a larger scale) showing two shapes
realization of a rotary cleaner shaft carrying the cleaning scrapers.
The roller grid 1 according to the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2 contains a number of rollers 2 arranged one behind the other - only four rollers are shown in Figure 1 for convenience - and each formed of a series of discs 3
<EMI ID = 1.1>
The discs 3 cannot rotate on the axis 2a, which preferably has a square cross section. The spacing of the discs on the neighboring rollers 2 is about the same everywhere; the discs 3 are however arranged staggered with respect to those of the neighboring roller or rollers 2 and partially penetrate into the gaps between the discs of the neighboring roller (s) in the manner of the teeth of combs. The discs 3 are identical and are preferably made of rubber or a similar material,
<EMI ID = 2.1>
are mounted in a commua 4 frame (Figure 2).
The rotational drive of the rollers 2 can be carried out in a conventional manner in the direction of the arrows 5 (that is to say in the direction of transport of the agricultural products to be cleaned), by a common drive mechanism or by separate mechanisms for the rollers and the mine speed or at different speeds of rotation, preferably with the possibility of reversing the direction of rotation.
The roller grate 1 further comprises a cleaning device for removing soil, clods, leaves and other unwanted material from the discs 3 and the gaps 6 between the discs. In the exemplary embodiment shown, this cleaning device comprises under each roller 2 a cleaning shaft 7 capable of being driven in rotation. Each

laying. All the cleaning shafts 7 of the grid 1 are rotatably mounted by their ends in the same common frame 4 as the rollers 2.
As emerges in particular from Figure 2, the axis 7a of each cleaning shaft 7 carries, for each gap 6 between two adjacent discs of the corresponding roller 2, a cleaning scraper 8 which the rotation of the shaft 7 allows to make. pass through the interval 6 considered. The axis 7a carries for this purpose at its periphery a number of support arms 9 which corresponds to the number of the intervals 6 between the discs 3 of the corresponding roller 2. The
<EMI ID = 4.1>
to Figures 3 and 4. At the free end of each support arm 9 is fixed a cleaning squeegee 8. It emerges from the drawing that the distance between the axes 7a of the cleaning shafts 7 and the axes 2a of the corresponding rollers 2 as well as the length of the arms 9 (including the squeegee 8) are chosen so that during the rotation of the shafts 7 the squeegees 8 penetrate sufficiently far into the gaps 6 between the discs - at the angular position where the penetration in the gap is maximum - preferably up to the vicinity of the hubs 3a of the discs delimiting the interval considered. Such an arrangement ensures proper cleaning of the discs 3 and the intervals 6 during the passage of the scrapers 8 through these intervals.
It should be noted here that the radius r of the circle of rotation of the squeegees 8, which is determined by the radial distance between the outer edge of the squeegee and the axis of rotation of the shaft 7, can have approximately the same the radius R of the discs 3 of the roller 2. It is however
It is recommended in such a case to rotate the cleaning shaft 7 at a speed other than the corresponding roller 2 so that the perfect cleaning of all parts of the periphery of the discs 3 and the gaps 6 can be ensured.
However, it is also advantageous to give the scrapers 8 a circle of rotation the radius r of which is smaller than the radius R of the discs 3, in which case it is preferable that the circles of rotation of the scrapers of neighboring cleaning shafts do not overlap. The cleaning shafts 7 can then be driven at any desired speed of rotation, therefore also at the same /
rotational speed as the rollers 2.
As regards the arrangement of the support arms 9 at the periphery of the shaft 7, it could in fact be carried out in any suitable manner. It is however preferable, as shown for the
embodiment of Figure 2, that the arms 9 (with the cleaning scrapers 8) are arranged on the periphery of the shaft 7 along a helical line and are uniformly distributed over the length of this shaft.
The fixing of the various support arms on the shaft 7 or, more precisely, on the axis 7a, will be described below with respect to the figures
3 and 4.
FIG. 3 first of all shows an embodiment where the axis 7a has a hexagonal profile and where each support arm 9 is fixed to the periphery of the axis 7a by welding the arm on two faces of the hexagonal profile. Figure 4 shows an embodiment where axis 7a has <EMI ID = 5.1>
corresponding transverse hole of the axis 7a and fixed to the latter using a nut 9'b. The support arm 9 'can thus be replaced very easily if necessary. Instead of being screwed on the axis 7a as in the example of Figure 4, the support arm 9 'can also be fixed on this axis
by riveting.
The cleaning squeegee 8 provided at the free end of the support arm 9 or 9 'can be fixed to this arm, both in the embodiment of FIG. 3 as in that of FIG. 4, by screwing, riveting or welding, a fastening means allowing replacement of the squeegee being preferred.
While all the axes 2a of the rollers 2 of the partial longitudinal section of FIG. 1 are located substantially in the same horizontal plane, it goes without saying that all these axes can also be arranged in the same inclined plane and that it is also possible to distribute them over several planes
(to form a stepped grid for example); however, it is important to ensure that each cleaning shaft remains substantially under the corresponding roller, so that it does not risk coming into contact with agricultural products and debris which advance on the grid.
A preferred application of a roller grid according to the invention is that it is mounted in a mobile cleaning and loading apparatus for bulk sugar beets. Such a device is usually placed on the field where sugar beets (or other agricultural products) are harvested. The apparatus is supplied with beets by clamshells, front loaders or similar devices; the appliance first removes dirt from the beets, in particular by means of the grid
with rollers and, then, by means of conveyor belts or other transport members mounted on the device, on the one hand loads the cleaned agricultural products onto a waiting truck, trailer or other vehicle and evacuates the other apart from the grime separated from the products. When such a cleaning and loading device is equipped with a roller grid according to the invention, it can be used on the most diverse fields with very different soils (heavy and sticky soils as well as very different soils.
<EMI ID = 6.1>
good cleaning of products.
A roller grid according to the invention can however also be used very effectively in devices, mobile or stationary, for stacking agricultural products in bulk (especially sugar beets); such devices are preferably installed in a factory yard, storage area or the like for, for example, unloading arriving transport vehicles with agricultural produce and cleaning simultaneously
these products.
