<EMI ID=1.1>

<EMI ID=5.1>

Method of controlling the dimensions of an object
The present invention relates to a method for checking the dimensions of an object, and in particular dimensions such as the width of the flange of the profiles, for example at the outlet of the rolling mill.
There are many optical methods for measuring the dimensions of objects and in particular the dimensions of the cross section of the profiles, by means of measurements of distances and generally of angles associated with these distances. The methods of this type involve the ba-sweeping of the section by the emission field under the action of at least one deflector driven by a rotational and / or translational movement.
The applicant has already recommended, for example, a method in which radiation is sent onto the profile and the part of the radiation retransmitted by the profile is detected by means of a receiver. The cross section is scanned by means of a rotary deflector and the retransmitted beam is maintained in the field of view of the receiver by synchronizing the orientation of the transmitter and receiver axes.
The results obtained with such processes have been found to be very satisfactory and it has thus been possible to control not only the quality of the rolled product, but also the quality of the rolling work.
However, there is always interest in increasing
the speed and precision of these measurements, on the one hand, for economic reasons and, on the other hand, for reasons of effective control. Indeed, the rolling rates are higher and higher and to control the products during manufacture, it is necessary to measure more and more quickly. Furthermore,
if you want to cut the products to length, it is in your interest to repeat the measurements as often as possible along the products,
in order to better locate the places where one passes from a correct dimension to a dimension out of tolerance.
The present invention specifically relates to a method making it possible to increase the speed and the precision of such measurements.
In order to avoid any misunderstanding, it should be specified that in order to define a dimension, within the framework of the present invention, points are chosen in relation to said dimension. Generally, these points are two in number and constitute the ends of said dimension. However, two series of points can also define a dimension and the projection on a perpendicular to the surface on which the object rests, of the distance between any of the points of the first series, of any of the points of the second series can constitute this dimension, for example the width of the flange of a section where the two series of points making it possible to define it can be made up on the one hand, by the points located on the the upper end of the sole and on the other hand,
by the points located on the core of this profile.
The method, object of the present invention in which on the one hand, at least one radiation is sent to the object and with the aid of a deflector, the various parts of the contour of the object comprising the points defining the dimensions to be measured, and in which on the other hand,
using a second deflector, the beams retransmitted by the said object are captured by means of a linear receiver, is essentially characterized in that, during the time taken by a deflector to scan one of the different parts of the contour of the object, the other deflector completely scans all of said different parts of the contour of the object and in that the optical elements are arranged relative to each other, such that the beams retransmitted by a of the different parts of the object outline remain substantially
on the same abscissa of the linear receiver during the scanning of said part of the contour.
According to a first embodiment of the invention, in the case where the dimensions of a cross section of the object are measured, the optical elements relating to the emission are located in the plane of said cross section and, of the on the receiving side, the axis around which the scanning takes place and the axis of orientation of the linear receiver are parallel and intercept the emitting plane at two points situated on a straight line perpendicular to the plane of the profile sole.
In a particularly advantageous manner, the angle made by the emission plane with the plane formed by the receiving elements consisting of the scanning axis and the orientation axis of the linear receiver, has a value of 45 [deg .].
According to a second embodiment of the invention,
two beams are simultaneously emitted whose axes form a known angle between them and these two beams are directed towards the points of the object in relation to the dimensions to be determined, so that when one of the two beams falls on one of the two points defining a dimension, the second beam falls on the second point.
According to another embodiment of the invention, a minimum scanning area is determined for each of the different parts of the contour of the object comprising the points defining the dimensions to be measured, and on the one hand,
scanning at the limits of each minimum zone and on the other hand, said minimum zones at the position of the object.
According to yet another embodiment of the invention, the minimum scanning areas are determined so that they are contiguous.
In the case where the object is liable to deviate from its normal position, the position of the object is identified by triangulation, by means of an auxiliary system comprising a receiver and a deflector.
The auxiliary receiver is advantageously, according to the invention, a network of photodiodes on which
forms the image of the cross section of the object, the position of the edges of the object corresponding to the end diodes
of the illuminated part.
According to the invention, the radiation (s) emitted advantageously have the form of directional beams, for example
<EMI ID = 1.1>
phrase and focused 1 help- of an objective on the object whose dimensions we want to determine.
Also according to the invention, the focusing of the beam or beams on the object is carried out at variable distances depending on the distance between the different parts of the contour of the object comprising the points defining the dimensions to be measured.
Figures 1 and 2 appended are given by way of non-limiting example, in order to make the invention clearly understood.
FIG. 1 relates to a section whose wing width is to be measured by means of a laser beam. FIG. 2 relates to a section whose wing width is to be measured by means of two laser beams the axes of which form a known angle between them.
According to FIG. 1, the section (1) whose wing width (2) is to be measured is located on a support (3). The

upper end of the sole and by a point (5) located on the web of the profile (1). If we know the projections on a perpendicular to the support (3) of the distances of points (4) and (5) with respect to a reference point, we can know the lar-
<EMI ID = 3.1>
other.
From the laser emitter (6), a beam is sent to an objective (7) which focuses this beam on a diaphragm (8). At the exit of this diaphragm, the beam, the section of which is clearly delimited, is focused on point (4)
by means of an objective (9). The impact of the beam on the point
(4) is provided by a mirror (10), the mobility of which is intended to cause the emitted beam to scan the upper end of the wing and part of the core comprising the point (5). The beam retransmitted by the point (4) is picked up by the mirror (11) which directs it onto an array of photodiodes (14-15) of a receiver (13) after passing over a focusing objective (12).
While the mirror (10) slowly sweeps the upper end of the sole, the mirror (11) rapidly sweeps this same area and the elements. (11), (12), (13), '-
(14-15) are arranged so that the beams retransmitted by said upper end of the sole fall substantially at the same place (17) of the photodiodes array (14-15), thus producing a more intense illumination of the diode (17) than according to other methods, since the diodes of the network (14-15) are usually rectangular in shape, the largest side of which is perpendicular to the axis (14-
15).
After having swept the upper end of the sole, the emitted beam sweeps the part of the core comprising the point (5). In the same way as for point (4), the beams retransmitted by the part of the core comprising point (5)
<EMI ID = 4.1>
diodes (14-15), thus producing a more intense illumination of the diode (16) than in other methods.
Knowledge of the positions of the diodes (16)
and (17), as well as mirrors (10) and (11) make it possible to determine by triangulation the width of the wing (2).
The reference numerals 1 to 17 of figure 2 represent the same elements as those of figure 1.
In figure 2, a second laser emitter (6 ') has been added as well as a focusing lens (7') on a diaphragm (8 ') and a second focusing lens (9') on the profile (1) . This modification of the emission of figure 2 compared to figure 1 is intended to direct towards the profile
(1) two beams whose axes form a known angle between them,
<EMI ID = 5.1>
another beam falls on point (5).
The beams retransmitted simultaneously by the points (4) and (5) are received respectively by the diodes (17) and (16), thanks to the arrangement of the reception system, in accordance with the invention. As in the case of figure (1), the diodes (16) and (17) have a more intense illumination than according to other methods.
Since the profile (1) of figure 2 is assumed to be a hot product and to be able to deviate from its normal position on the support (3), an auxiliary system is used to identify the instantaneous location of the profile (1) . This auxiliary system comprises a receiver (18) and a mirror (19) by means of which, by triangulation, the position of the profile (1) can be known at any time. The mirror (19) is made to oscillate, so that the receiver (18) scans the field in which the profile (1) must be located. When the receiver
(18) is illuminated following the detection of the profile (1), the position of the mirror (19) is noted to which corresponds a set position of the emitting mirror (10) around which said mirror (10) oscillates. During the next scan of the mirror (19), a new setpoint is sent to the mirror (10), the position of which is therefore slaved to the mirror (19), and by the latter to the position of the edge of the wing of the profile (1 ).
When we speak of linear receiver in the present invention, it is meant a receiver of which one dimension, for example the length, is large compared to another dimension, for example the width.
