Abstract
Each fuel rod has an enclosed top and a wood charcoal filter plug in its base through which fission product gases escape into a collector manifold, they are extracted by entrainment into a stream of purging gas derived from the coolant proper by overpressure into a filter, the repurified coolant being reinjected into the main cooling circuit. The outlet from the collector manifold is via a fusible metal lock in which the metal is molten at operating temp. but solidified on shut down to seal the gases in during refuelling. The purging gas feed is via spring loaded NRV to prevent leakage of fission products in the event of coolant pressure drop.
