Abstract

Water (0.1-0.5%) is added to a mixture of saturated 8-18C (pref. 10-14C) primary monohydric alcohols and this mixture is treated in the presence of an acid catalyst, pref. BF3, with sufficient ethylene oxide that the product contains 43-47% of C2 units thus added. Further treatment in the presence of base, pref. NaOH, gives a polyglycol ether product containing 57-61% of units derived from the added epoxide.
