<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"Expanding shaft mechanism for high reduction ratios **
Mechanisms with expandable shafts for high reduction ratios are already known which comprise two rings arranged concentrically one inside the other and the inner ring of which can be deformed radially, so that its wall is applied at several peripheral locations against the other ring and that peripheral locations not having such a connection are each time between them. This mechanism has only one fixed transmission ratio which is predetermined by the production dimensions.
The object of the invention is to modify such a mechanism so that it is possible to effect with it a continuous change of the transmission ratio.
The invention is characterized by the fact that in order to obtain the continuous change of the transmission ratio, the two rings can be displaced in the axial direction with respect to one another.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
port to another by touching on different diameters along the displacement motion.
As a result, it is possible to obtain a continuous change of the transmission which has a large adjustment range - while retaining the very simple constitution of the mechanism having a high reduction ratio.
One embodiment of the subject of the invention is shown, by way of non-limiting example, in the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 shows a section of the mechanism along the line C-C of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the mechanism.
The mechanism has an inner ring 1 in which there are four planet wheels 2 which cooperate with a pinion 3 mounted on a drive shaft 4. The satellite wheels are retained by a spider 5 which is freely supported by the shaft 4. The planet wheels 2 exert pressure against the inner ring 1 and the dimensions of the parts are planned so that the shape of the ring 1 differs slightly from the exact circular shape and approximates a square force with rounded angles, so that the diameter of the ring 1, measured at location A - A, is slightly greater. to that of place B - B.
This difference may be around a few tenths of a millimeter in small mechanisms, so that it is not visible in the drawing. The planet wheels 2 and the pinion 3, as well as the inner surface of the ring 1, can be made either as friction wheels or as toothed wheels. The planet wheels 2 are arranged in rotation on each time an axis 12 which is held rigidly on its side on the spider 5. During a rotation of the pinion 3, the planet wheels 2 roll on the inner surface of the ring 1 , so that the domed places move on the ring 1.
The ring 1 has a cone on the outside and in the direction of its transverse face 6. An outer ring 10 has
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
also on its inner side a conical surface II which is intended to cooperate with the cone 7. Since the ring 1 differs from the exact circular shape, the conical surfaces 7 also apply in four places only against the bagua 10 and these places move along the periphery when the shaft 4 and hence the planet wheels 2 are turned. The periphery of the cone 7 therefore unwinds on the conical surface II.
However, since the inner ring has a slightly smaller periphery than the ring 10 due to its flattened areas between the satellite wheels 2, a difference in the periphery is obtained during the unwinding movement which results in by relative rotation of the ring 1 or the ring 10, the other turns the difference between the two peripheries, so that a relatively large production ratio is obtained.
In order to modify this reduction ratio, the rings 1 and 10 are moved ur.e relative to each other in their axial direction; it is assumed that the ring 10 is of a deformable or elastic material, for example of a synthetic material such as "NYLON". Assuming that the ring 1 is retained in its axial direction and that the ring 10 is moved in the direction of the ring 1 along the arrow E, the effective diameter of the tapered surface II of the ring 10 which comes into contact with the cone 7 changes, which also changes the reduction ratio. Since small differences are already sufficient to cause a large change in the reduction ratio, corresponding small axial displacements are also sufficient.
During this relative movement of the rings; the outer ring is also more or less deformed at the contact points. It would also be possible to produce the surfaces coming into contact with one another of the rings 1 and 10 with a relatively flat bending.
As output wheel, it is possible to provide, as desired, wheel 1 or 10, the other wheel having to be retained each time. The direction of rotation of the output is different depending on whether wheel 1
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
or 10 is retained, assuming that pinion 3 always turns in the same direction.
It is obvious that the whole of the constitution can also be realized in reverse by the fact that the satellite rollers or the elliptical ball bearing are arranged on the outer periphery of the rings. For specific uses, it is also possible to retain the pinion 3 and entrain the rings, or drive the pinion 3 and the rings, the other ring or also the pinion 3 then serving as output.
The rigidity and the shape of the rings and the cones where the curvatures of the surfaces unwinding on one another are chosen according to the field of use, so that: a) The power remains constant over the entire range of rotational speeds b ) The torque remains constant over the entire range of rotation. c) Power and torque change only in function. tion of needs.
The mechanism can also be used as a sliding coupling when a control torque is exceeded.
