<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

HYDRAZINS WITH LONG ALIFIED CHAIN AND THEIR PREPARATION
The present invention relates to hydrazines having in their structure a long aliphatic chain%, and to the preparation of these compounds,
More specifically, the present invention relates to hydrazines corresponding to the following general formula t
EMI1.1
in which proposals:

an alkyl nitrite, such as, for example, isoamyl nitrite. The yield of the diazotation is inversely proportional to the amount of water, if any, present. A detailed example of a diazotation in an anhydrous medium is described in British Pat. No. 840,731. Suitable organic solvents for carrying out the diazotation include acetic acid, iaopropanol and n-propanol.
The diazotation as used in the preparation of the hydrazines according to the present invention proceeds more specifically as follows: the amine or amine hydrochloride, which has already been

After adding 2 to 3 moles of hydrogen chloride in the form of concentrated hydrochloric acid calculated with respect to the amine, the diazotation is carried out with an alkyl nitrite,
Bee
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
preferably isoamyl nitrite in equimolecular amount or slight excess (e.g. 30%. The duration of the diazotation and the reaction temperature depend on the reactivity of the amine used and the stability of the diazonium compound formed. Usually the diazotation is carried out at a temperature comprised between 15 and 40 ° C and the reaction requires a reaction time of 15 to 60 minutes. After the diazotation, any excess nitrite can be dissolved by adding urea.
The diazonium compound formed is reduced, preferably with at least double the molar amount of tin (II) chloride-2-water dissolved in concentrated hydrochloric acid (about 1 g per ml. Depending on the technical equipment, the tin (II) chloride-2-chloride solution can be added without objection to the diazonium salt solution or the latter to the former.
Since the reduction is exothermic and the thermolability of diazonium compounds must be taken into account, the temperature at which the reduction is carried out must be kept below certain limits. Favorable results are obtained at a temperature of not more than 12 ° C for the reduction of diazonium salts with electron-donating substituents and at a temperature of no higher than 20 ° C for the reduction of diazonium salts with electron-attracting groups.
After the completion of the reduction, the reaction product is separated. In certain cases, by recrystallization from a suitable organic solvent, the corresponding hydrazine salt of high purity can be obtained (see preparation 1).
According to another purification technique, the reaction product is extracted from the reaction mass at boiling temperature with an organic, water-immiscible solvent, such as, for example, n-hexane, isopropyl ether or benzene.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The extracted hydrazine salt can then be reacted, also in an organic medium, with alkali into the free hydrazine base (see preparation 2).
According to a process with more limited possibilities, certain hydrazines can be prepared starting from halides which bear an electron-attracting group on a nucleus of aromatic character in o and / or p position in relation to the halogen atom. G.D. Byrkit and G.A. Michalek,
Ind. and Eng News 42 (1950) 1862 describe the reaction of said halides with hydrazine hydrate to form the corresponding hydrazines.
E Koenigs and A. Wyleziok, J. Prakt, chem 132 (1931) 24-38 describe the reaction of alkylsulfonylphenyl halides with hydrazine hydrate in ethanol at boiling temperature. From the examples described in the latter reference it can be deduced that the yield is inversely proportional. with the length of the aliphatic chain of the starting product, and the increase in reaction temperature does not benefit from this.
The process used according to the present invention makes it possible to prepare o-alkylsulfonylphenylhydrzaine p-alkylsulfonylphenyl hydrazine, N-alkylsulfamoyl hydrazine, N, N-dialkylsulfamoylphenylhydrazine and analogous 2-hydrazinopyridine derivatives from the corresponding halogen compounds. This process relies on the reaction between activated halides and anhydrous hydrazine. The reaction is preferably carried out at boiling temperature in an organic solvent, which is inert to the reagents and the final products. Moreover, it is preferably carried out in a homogeneous phase, so that this should be taken into account when selecting the solvent.
A particularly suitable solvent for this type of reaction is, for example, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether
Although in principle the substitution reaction can be carried out with a double molar amount of hydrazine,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
usually a 10 to 15 fold molar amount of anhydrous hydrazine is used to shorten the residual time *
The concentration of dissolved halide is preferably as high as possible, for example 15 to 2 moles per liter of ethylene glycol monomethyl ether
The reaction time is, of course, dependent on the nature of the activating substituents on the core with aromatic character.
The choice of the exchangeable halogen, which is determined by the required activation and economic factors, also determines the reaction time. Depending on the starting product, it is sufficient to boil the reaction mass for 1 to 24 hours under reflux to obtain complete conversion.
After the reaction, by cooling and / or precipitation (in water, methanol or ethanol) and thorough washing with water, the hydrazine in crystalline state and in high purity can be obtained. the following preparations illustrate the invention.
Preparation 1 o-octadecylthlophenylhydrzzine

After 30 minutes, a yellow solution is obtained, to which 9 g of urea (0.15 mol) are added and which is stirred for a further 30 minutes.
The reduction is carried out by adding to the diazonium solution at 5-1000 in 75 minutes a solution of 260 g of tin (II) chloride-2-water (1.15 mol) in 300 ml of 12N hydrochloric acid. After stirring for 60 minutes, the mixture is warmed to solution and poured into ice. The precipitate formed
