Description

   <Desc/Clms Page number 1>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 4>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

   The invention relates to telephony and more particularly to a device for temporarily recording all information required to charge a subscriber who is conducting an inter-local call. Once a telephone company introduces subscriber long-distance dialing, it expects to be able to no longer need the operators who now handle inter-local traffic.

   To this end, the switching equipment at all switching points involved can be arranged to respond to the number sent by the subscriber and then connect him to the removed party, which function hitherto requires the intervention of at least one operator. made. However, one of these operators was used, in addition to participating in the connection, to write a rate card, for which the subscription. no was taxed. Therefore, if the operators disappear and all switching operations are performed automatically, this rate card function, which used to be

 <Desc / Clms Page number 2>

 assigned to an operator can also be performed automatically.

   This function, which is completely separate and clearly distinguished from the automatic switch. Calling problem, according to the invention, is performed by first recording all information needed for tariff purposes while the call is being made.

   One of the objects of the present invention is to provide an automatic message recording system comprising a magnetic drum and a device which effects the recording of the call information on the drum during the course of a call and then transfers the recorded information to a drum. collector from which they can be subsequently withdrawn for tariff purposes.

   Another object is to provide an automatic message recording device which continuously searches connection lines from an automatic switching system for a connection line which has been taken by a calling subscriber in order to detect the information and for such a call and which on a recorder sees several tracks select a recording track to record the information regarding such a detected call.

     Yet another object is to provide a read track selector for a multi-track recorder that is common to a plurality of tracks.

   Another object is to provide an apparatus in a telephone switching system with automatic message recording capabilities that blocks calls originating from a nunt station or other unauthorized line without affecting the coin station or unauthorized lines in a separate group. are accommodated.

   The above and other objects of the invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 and 2 side by side illustrate how the automatic message recording system according to the invention works; and
FIG. 3 is a graph showing the timescale control for recording the call information on the magnetic drum.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

   In the drawing, the system described records fully automatically the pertinent details of an interlocal call, including the automatic identification not only of the line from which a subscriber is calling, but also of his station, if connected to a party line. The system also makes records in a master or pilot exchange of calls originating in a satellite exchange.

   The basic elements of the system housed in a main exchange are a rectifier diode array, which establishes the identity of the calling line; furthermore, a magnetic drum acting as a temporary register for the numerical information; in addition, a magnetic or paper strip, which is the permanent collection register; a device for identifying party line posts; a pulse timing; and clock and calendar chains so that all necessary information of a long distance call is recorded for a later load.

   The step-type telephone exchange includes the line locator, (indicated by
LF in the drawing), the first selector (1S), the second selector 2S), a connector (C) and a modified amplifier for an outgoing link cable, as schematically represented in FIG. 1 and 2. It is noted, however, that with minor modifications to the automatic message recording system, the invention may also be applied to rotary and crossbar exchanges.

   The function of the automatic message recording system (AMR) is to record all the information necessary to charge a subscriber for an inter-local call which he has initiated himself. This means that the number sent must be registered; that the directory number of the calling subscriber must be automatically obtained and registered; the date and time of the call must be recorded; that the duration of the call must also be recorded.

   In AMR, the duration of the call is obtained by first recording the time at which the called subscriber answers and then the disconnection time and subtracting one from the other to determine the duration of the call. This avoids having to do a time registration. holding the duration of the conversation.

   The AMR system, as shown, includes a magnetic drum 3 on which the information of the call is recorded during the call. By

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

 By means of such a drum, a number of call information can be recorded simultaneously with a minimum of equipment. According to the invention, the drum is further associated with a number of writing heads 4 and reading heads 5, which are arranged such that the drum is divided into a number of tracks 6 at the periphery, each of which is provided with a writing head and a reading head. However, each track is of such a length that it can have sufficient recording cells to store all the information necessary for a predetermined number of communication lines; bring.

   As will be described hereinafter, the read head for each track is controlled by a time scale circuit 8 such that the head records the information from the associated connection lines serially. By means of a track selector 9, the notification of each call is immediately read from the drum and fed to a more permanent form of storage device, such as a magnetic or paper strip, shown schematically at 10. In FIG. The track selector circuit is controlled so that only one call is read each time, so that the information from a number of cells is recorded on the strip machine 10 in series.

   An unshown strip map converter may be used at the end of each day, week or month as desired to issue a strip with a set of call information, after which each call information is transferred to punched cards, which can suitably be used to charge subscribers.

   Subscriber lines can be connected either over a separate line or over a party line or mixed to an automatic switching equipment of a central exchange. In the figure, line 12 is shown as a lot line with posts
13 and 14. During operation, a subscriber picks up his microphone, picks up a line locator, which connects him to a primary dialer, and receives a dial tone. If the subscriber now initiates a local call, the AMR equipment is not activated, but if he sends a long-distance access code such as a single digit (which, however, can also be different digits, depending on the circuitry used), the call passed to a repeater for outgoing trunk calls such as 16.

   At this moment, since it is not known that the call to be initiated is an interloèal call, of which a card must be made, the AMR equipment is put into use. The slightly modified amplifier is essentially the amplifier used in the common switching system, apart from the fact that 6 to 8 points have to be changed therein.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 tied to the associated AMR trunk stream 18. All digits which the subscriber is now sending and which the amplifier is transmitting over the trunk are also applied to this trunk stream, where they are counted in turn.

   The drum common write circuit 20 reads the value of each digit received by the counter, decodes this digit and writes the result on a portion of the magnetic drum 3 reserved only to record the called number. , that is associated with a call using the particular trunk in question. At the time when the first of these digits is recorded, previously selected digits are those therein. be struck to access the connection line, already similarly recorded on the drum, their values being known by the connection line reached thereby.

   The features and operation of the trunk current loop 2 and of the drum record write circuit, the associated line identification and batch line identification units 21 and 22, and the boost battery monitor circuit 23 are described in U.S. Patent Application No. 594,756, filed June 29, 1956. Timescale chains 8, 24, and 25 are described in U.S. Patent Application No. 598,961, filed July 19, 1956.

   While this dialing is in progress, when the calling subscriber is connected to a party line, a transistor oscillator 30 (Fig. 2) sends into the calling subscriber set 7, as described in U.S. Patent Application No. 451,791, filed August 24, 1954. , a tone of one of ten or more possible frequencies that characterizes the calling station out each time dialer contacts are opened in the subscriber's set. When these contacts are closed, which is always the exception during dialing, this oscillator is shorted and at rest. This tone is detected by means such as those described in the.

  U.S. Patent Application No. 595,486, filed July 2, 1956, which means forms a portion of the interconnect line stream 18. The frequency of this tone is determined in a tone discrimination detector connected to the trunk current loop and a digit corresponding thereto is sent over the write circuit to the drum where it is recorded at a location which exclusively reserved for that purpose.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

   When enough dialed digits have been sent over the trunk to ensure that the tone has been detected and the correct postal digit registered, a request state is set up in the trunk flow loop 18 to initiate an identification of the calling line. Since only one line identification can take place at a time, the link must wait its turn and when it occurs, the link line current flow is caused to replace the hold ground on the "special" wire of the amplifier with a line. small positive potential. This potential, in addition to further holding the connection, is fed back along the particular wire to the calling line current loop from which it passes to the rectifier diode array.

   In the meantime, by the identification circuit 22 of the lot line stations, the postal number previously recorded on the drum 3 has been extracted therefrom and stored on the matrix 21 such that the directory number of the calling subscriber is directly extracted from the matrix can be obtained. This number is applied across encoder and identity checker 32 to the identity transmitter
33, which converts it into electronic pulses and sends it through the writing circuit 20 to the portion of the drum reserved for the calling number of calls routed on the respective trunk.

   These identifi-. line cation and number determination can be made at any time during which the link is held, but this will usually be the case as soon as after the postal cipher is registered the common chains become available.

     It should be noted that the description of the method of determining and recording the directory number of a calling subscriber connected to a party line refers to the type of trunk exchange in which the directory numbers of different subscribers are on the same line are not interrelated, that is, when using single terminal connectors per post. If party lines are numbered on the basis of one terminal per line, the determined postal digit constitutes a part of the directory number of the calling subscriber and it is only necessary to register the number, together with the line obtained from the matrix, at appropriate places on the drum.

   If the calling subscriber has an individual line, his extension owns

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 no oscillator, no tone is detected and an extra signal is generated by the matrix indicating that the number obtained therefrom is the subscriber's directory number and can be recorded as such on the drum¯ When the called subscriber answers) the time of day out. Obtained a clock circuit 34 of known form and applied through the time sensor gate 35 and the write circuit 20 to the portion of the drum reserved for the call response time on the particular trunk.

     When the calling subscriber turns off, the recording analyzer 36, which subsequently reads each drum track under the control of the track selector 9, recognizes this state, then signals the start-stop controller 40 to turn on the strip machine. , it then takes the various recorded data belonging to it from the drum and feeds this data to the write circuit 42, which records it in series on the magnetic strip 44 of the machine 10.

   At the same time, the recording analyzer 36 signals the write circuit 46 to record sync pulses on a second track of the same magnetic stripe, which pulses are later used in the strip-card converter. In addition, the write circuit 42 obtains the time of day, that is it. time of the time transmitter and the date of the date transmitter. When all of this data has been recorded on the strip, register analyzer 30 signals start-stop controller 40 to stop the flow.

   Since the registration analyzer can only handle one call at a time, a connection line is occupied for about 2 seconds after the disconnection signal, so that no calls are lost when a number of simultaneous disconnections occur. Once a trunk is free, another call can pick it up and the spaces reserved on the drum for the various intelligence data and filled by the data from the previous call will be needed for this new call. It is therefore important that this 2 second delay be present in the system to ensure that all data associated with the previous call has been extracted from it and applied to the strip before allowing a new one to be recorded. - call the connecting line.

   It should be noted that information can be sent to the drum from any or all connecting lines simultaneously. registered; and that the reading or the withdrawal operation, which is only each time

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 only for one connection line, in no way affects the simultaneous write operation for any or any number of other connection lines. A withdrawal of deregistration normally only takes place for full and thus billable calls; however, if specifically required, incomplete calls can also be recorded.

   At a time convenient for the user, the magnetic stripe is removed from the stripe machine and another strip is deployed, while all disconnected connectors, when performed, are busy.

  The first strip is then placed on the strip-map converter. Such a strip coil can contain, for example, the recording for 14,000 long-distance calls.

   While the strip was being printed with an information read from the magnetic drum and therefore had to be moved just 38 cm per second in order to obtain a sufficient distance between the elements of the information coming from the drum, it must be are read at a speed suitable for card punching which is mechanically rather slow.

  In fact, the strip is read by the strip map converter 5 at 1.25 @ per second, which corresponds to 15 decimal digits per second. The card punching machine makes one card for each long distance call; these cards can then be dealt and sorted to the subscriber accounts to be sent. can then be formatted fully automatically with the aid of conventional accounting machines 42.

   The card punch machine shown is preferably an I.B.l. type 526 card punch press but others such as Remingtcn Rand machines can easily be used instead with some minor changes to the strip card converter. By arranging the converter to control a conventional teletype repeater, only punched or punched and printed paper strips can be produced instead of punch cards.

   For detailed information on a suitable stripe card converter, reference is made to U.S. Patent Application No. 594,187, filed June 27, 1956.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

   In another available embodiment of the invention, which is particularly suitable for the case of a small main plant, a registration on a paper strip is made direct. from the drum and it is not necessary to make a registration on a mag @ etic strip. However, since a recording on a paper strip is much slower than a recording on a magnetic strip, the inter-local traffic from which the maps are to be made must be such that this slow operation can be permitted.

   Another method of identifying the items which have the advantage of simplicity and economy is to allow the calling subscriber to identify himself with regard to his own postal digit, namely by leaving him with a separately determined digit after the access code. depending on which party it is on the line: this digit is fed to the connection line current loop and recorded on the drum, but is prevented from repeating over the connection line. The line identification and the determination of the directory number as well as the registration thereof take place as before.

   When counting, if a boost battery on the particular wire is used to count local calls, it is also preferable to use a boost battery guard circuit that prevents line identification from taking place if a count occurs. Since the identification only takes about 1/4 second, the fact that the identification has to be performed between counts presents no difficulty. In addition, since the voltage used for line identification is comparatively small, it cannot run a message register; and therefore these two extra functions performed over the particular thread cannot interfere with each other.

    For details of a booster battery count, the chain of custody and the erroneous transmission release, reference is made to U.S. Patent Application No. 59,756.

   The drum 3 in fig. 3 can have any number of tracks 74 from twelve to several hundreds. Each track can record the information belonging to at least five connecting lines and thus only a small drum is required for most contral. A track is always used to record sync pulses, which are amplified by a reading amplifier, then again

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 are generated by a pulse generator, and are used to drive a time scale circuit.

   This timescale chain controls the identity transmitter, the time transmitter, the date transmitter, the record analyzer and the write circuits, and further determines when each chain will deliver its Intelligence to the drum; as the mess continues. rotates at preferably 15 revolutions per second, this actually means that the timescale circuit determines when each circuit will function. For further details, see U.S. Patent Application. question 598,961 (Jul 19, 1956).

   If the exchange housing the AMR equipment is a node of interconnects, it is likely that there are many outgoing groups of interconnects and that the numbers for calls going out on these interconnects , are not related to the actual steps that the switches must make to route the calls over these communication lines. Also, a route selection is often required in such cases.

   For this purpose, an electronic register transmitter is preferably provided to co-exist with AMR and provides a three- or six-digit conversion, handles routing and either transmits pulses at a rate of 10 per second. either multifrequency pulses while following a route selector. and capturing a link will wait for an initial signal if necessary before sending pulses over the link. This electronic register transmitter offers a great advantage over the usual electro-mechanical director, which has been used in some step systems, such as in London, for many years.

   The AMR system further provides a device which a) will derive the elapsed time from the answer and disconnect time, b) derive the tariff from the called area code and / or the called exchange code, the date and day, and c) the load will derive for the call from a) and b).

   Coin stations and in fact any line can be blocked by the AMR equipment from making long distance calls without having to group these lines into separate groups within the exchange. With a fully automatic identification means are available for each mail

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 block a party line from sending a long-distance call and still allow the other stations on the line to initiate such a call. Thus a coin station can be connected to a party line if necessary and the other subscribers on this line can still have the option of selecting an interlocal line.

   Cold-cathode gas-filled tubes have been used as extensively as possible in the AMR because of their long life and reliability. Transistors have also been widely used because of the advantages of their small size and low power consumption.

   The time scale consists of a counting device of 600 points and is arranged with four stages; first stage is divided into four chains; second is divided into five chains; third stage is divided into ten chains; the fourth stage is oddly divided into three chains. By combining the outputs with appropriate gates, 600 individual pulse outputs are obtained.

  Since the time scale is operated by the clock track on the drum, one pulse is present for each of the 600 elements of this track. Thus, when the nth element of the clock track appears at the read head of the clock track, the time scale will generate a pulse at the nth gate, which pulse will allow the positive or negative information pulse to be written to the drum by the write head. at the nth place of the signal track.

   However, the write head is disposed diametrically opposite the reading head (or 180 after) so that the actual reading time of the nth element is when the (n-300) th element is read on the signal trace. When the time comes to read the information on the drum and transfer it to the strip, the information on signal track below the reading head is in sync, but delayed by 300 elements from the clock track. The drum used is of a model capable of recording information for fifty connection lines on ten signal tracks. In order to maintain the readout operation, a sequence track selector 9 is used.

   The track selector 9 is a gate circuit which makes it possible to search (and extract from it if necessary) the recorded information on each track to be searched. By using a counting

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 direction with 10 points it is possible to search up to 10 tracks of the drum. A second counter is necessary to extend the chain for more than 10 tracks.

   The connecting line current loop 18 can be suitably divided into two sections.

  The function of the first section is to extract the pulses sent, the response control signal, and the shutdown signal at the amplifier, and to further send these signals to the recorder. The function of the second section is to start with the identification of the calling subscriber.

   The write circuit 20 is a gating network, which receives all the relevant information, either as direct current signals (or biases) from that portion of the trunk current that records the transmitted digits, or as pulse sequences from the transmitter of the identification circuit or from the transmitter. of the timing chain, whereupon this gate network passes these signals under the control of outputs of the timescale so that they are written on the correct portion of the track on the drum. The system for recording is such that erasure is unnecessary.

   A new information is printed over the previous information, i.e. the drum is magnetically saturated with opposite polarity. The tubes of this chain, which produce the correct waveforms, are common to one track of the drum, i.e. to five connecting lines, since there are five connecting lines: on one track. The rectifiers that supply signals to these tubes form five similar groups, one group being common to a connection line.

   The clock chain 34 and the calendar chain 50 supply the time of day, day of the month and month of the year through the positions on a step switch. This information is transmitted through gates to the time transmitter 35 and the calendar transmitter 51. The output from the time transmitter is available such that the time is continuously written on the drum for each connection line. When the removed party answers, the time recording is halted.

  The time last written is the response time, accurate to within six seconds, as the clock steps every six seconds. The output of the time transmitter and calendar transmitter is available to the registration analyzer 36

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 to write the shutdown time on the strip (or transfer the time from the drum to the strip) and also write the date on the strip. A writing circuit is provided to handle the information from five connecting lines: - parts.

   The write head is controlled by an in-out tube and causes the writing of a "1" or "0" on the drum. However, the drum reading is offset 180 degrees from the writing position and is continuously read in the recording analyzer. The purpose of this chain is to examine each track to determine if there are channels waiting with full calls to be recorded and further to extract this information from the drum and continuously update the magnetic strip. Register. The first five digits of the track contain separate messages for each of the five link lines examined by the timescale chain, and this information may be referred to as the "record state digits".

   The remainder of the track contains the information for each of the five channels at every fifth digit position, spaced uniformly around the drum. A channel contains all the information from one trunk.

   In fig. 3, the graph represents a drum track 70 as divided by time scale circuit 8. Each track is divided into time zones to accommodate all call information pertaining to five communication lines, the call information being are recorded in sequence according to the time at which the information becomes available and according to the timescale control that is responsible for writing the information. According to the time scale, the track, which represents one revolution of the drum, is divided into 30 pieces.

   The first piece is the registration state control area, the next four pieces are grouped together to accommodate date information, the next 11 pieces give the information about the called number, the next 8 pieces give the information about the calling number, the next five pieces provide information on the response time, while the last piece is spare and can be used as desired.

   The system of this application may provide information as to the date

 <Desc / Clms Page number 14>

 can be fed to the drum, but as stated above, they may alternatively be sent directly to the strip recording machine over the date transmitter. When sent directly to this machine, the information need not be recorded on the drum and this space may be used for other purposes if desired. However, in some installations it may be desirable to record the date information on the drum, and space is therefore provided for this. According to the timescale control, each.

    1 / 30th section of track information for each of the five connecting lines.

  The first portion 73 of the calling number section 72 is shown enlarged by way of example to show this distribution of the track time between the connecting lines T1-T5. The portion 75 of the first section 73 is used for one decimal digit of the calling number for the connection line T1. The-

   Although the principles of the invention have been described above, with reference to a particular apparatus, it is to be understood that the description is given by way of example only and the invention is not limited thereto.
