<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

It is frequently desired to cool quickly and keep solid or liquid substances, especially food and drink products, cool for a period of time. At home, this is easily done in a cooler. But we do not have a refrigerator for food or drinks that must be taken to the workplace or outside. Insulated containers, whose useful capacity is generally quite low, are not sufficient either, in most cases, especially when it is desired to cool hot substances rapidly.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
This is done frequently by adding pieces of ice to the food or drink, but the mixing of the food with the water of the melted ice and the dilution of the drinks are generally undesirable, and are, moreover, not hygienic. The present invention overcomes these drawbacks.
The object of the invention is a method for cooling and keeping solid or liquid substances cool, consisting in placing in a refrigerator a hermetically sealed hollow body containing a freezable cold accumulating liquid and in which an expansion space is provided for take into account the increase in volume of the liquid during freezing, to leave the hollow body in the refrigerator until the liquid has completely frozen, then remove the hollow body and make it act on the substance that you want to cool or keep cool.
The hollow body in question can exert its action directly or indirectly on the substance that one wishes to cool or keep cool and which thus undergoes no change in taste or water content, that is to say that the hollow body may have the shape of a container for the substance to be cooled or kept cool, for example the shape of a double-walled cup or the shape of a tray on which a container is placed containing the substance to be cooled or kept. keep cold. For cooling the hollow body, the freezing compartment of a household or industrial refrigerator is preferably used, which is advantageously used to hold a certain number of previously cooled hollow bodies in reserve.
The invention further relates to a device for carrying out this method, characterized in that it is formed by at least one hermetically sealed hollow body made of a material that is poor conductor of heat, the cavity of which is filled with a freezable liquid, with the exception of an expansion space intended to take account of the increase in the volume of the liquid during freezing.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The hollow body of poor heat conductor material advantageously comprises a metal heat exchanger wall, which acts directly or indirectly on the substance to be cooled or kept cool., To improve heat transmission, this wall can be lined with metal cooling fins on the side in contact with the cold accumulating liquid.
FIGS. 1 to 4 of the appended drawing represent, in section and by way of examples, four embodiments of the device for implementing the method according to the invention.
In the embodiment shown in fig.l, the hollow body 1, made of a material that is poor conductor of heat, for example plastic, has the shape of a plate, the upper wall of which is formed by a metal plate 2 , for example in nickel-plated sheet, hermetically recessed. The plate 2 is lined on its inner face with metal cooling fins 3 which dip into the cavity of the hollow body 1. This hermetically sealed cavity of the hollow body 1 contains a freezable cold accumulator liquid 4, such as water, brine, etc. An expansion space 5 is provided and proportioned so as to avoid any deformation or destruction of the hollow body 1 by the increase in volume of the cold accumulating liquid during freezing.
The hollow body 1 is cooled in a refrigerator until the cold accumulating liquid 4 is completely frozen, and it can then be used as a tray, plinth or "bottom" for a container containing the substance to be cooled or stored. keep cool, which can be a cup or cup 6. The metal plate 2 then fulfills the function of heat exchange wall, and the heat exchange is greatly favored by the fins 3.
The device shown in FIG. 2 is constituted by a hollow body in the form of a cup or cup with a double wall, intended to receive a liquid to be cooled or to be kept cool, and the outer wall 11 of which is made of a bad material

conductive of heat, for example plastic, while the inner wall 12 is metallic, for example aluminum.
The inner wall 12 is lined, on its outer face, with fins 13 which extend into the cavity formed between the inner 12 and outer 11 walls of the cup or cup. The hermetically sealed cavity between these two walls contains a freezable cold accumulating liquid 14, such as water, brine, etc., and a sufficiently large expansion space 15 is still provided in this example.
The device shown in fig.3 comprises two hollow bodies. One of these hollow bodies is in the form of a double-walled flat box, the outer wall 21 of which is made of a material which is a poor conductor of heat, while the inner wall 22 is metallic, for example aluminum. The inner wall of this boot also bears on the outer face of the fins 23, which plunge into the cavity between the inner and outer walls. The hermetically sealed space separating the two walls contains a freezable cold accumulating liquid 24, such as water, brine, etc., and a complementary expansion space 25 is still provided in this example.
The other hollow body of this device is a cover adapting to the box, the outer wall 26 of which is made of a material which is a poor conductor of heat, while the inner wall 27 is metallic. The inner wall 27 carries, on its outer face, fins 28 which extend into the cavity formed between this wall 27 and the outer wall 26. The cavity hermetically sealed between the two walls 26, 27 of the cover contains a freezable accumulator liquid. of cold 29, such as water, brine, etc ... and still has a sufficiently large expansion space 30. The box 21,22 is intended to receive food to be cooled or kept cool, ice cream, etc.
The device shown in FIG. 4 comprises a boot 31 made of a material which is a poor conductor of heat, closed by a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
cover 32 made with the same material. In this' box 31, are housed two hollow bodies in the form of trays, the opposite walls 33 of which are made of a material which is poor conductor of heat while the walls 34, facing one another, are metallic. The walls 34 carry, on their inner face, fins 33 which extend into the cavity between each wall 34 and the corresponding wall 33. The hermetically sealed cavity between the walls 33 and 34 of the two hollow bodies contains a freezable cold accumulator liquid 36, and comprises a complementary expansion space 37, which is sufficiently large.
The food or other substances to be cooled or kept cool are placed in the box 31 between the two: hollow orps in the form of trays.
