<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Tensioning device, in particular for a box spring.
The present invention relates to a tensioning device applicable to elastic supports such as metal sheets or others with which the bed bases as well as certain furniture or sleeping or resting devices are provided, and remarkable in that it automatically causes the tension of the elastic support either in the transverse direction, or in the longitudinal direction, or simultaneously in both directions, as soon as a pressure oriented from top to bottom is applied at any point of the support, such as for example that resulting from the weight of a body.
It is known that the metal spring bases with tensioner comprise an elastic support constituted, most often, by a metal mesh fixed by one of its short sides on one of its raised end cross members of the frame consisting essentially
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
by two cross-braced side members and by the other end on a tensioning device allowing the tension to be adjusted.
This device ensuring the tension at the end and in the longitudinal direction of the fabric has the particular drawback of not ensuring the tension in the transverse direction and of risking the formation of pockets or the sagging of the edges of the fabric.
The object of the present invention is to remedy this drawback by ensuring the tension of the support in the transverse direction and possibly in the longitudinal direction.
The elastic support tensioning device according to the invention is remarkable in that certain points, two by two opposite of at least two of the opposite edges of this support, are connected to the ends of two identical and independent tensioning levers, oriented parallel to the median plane perpendicular to said sides and articulated respectively by their opposite ends at fixed points, integral for example with the frame of the support, so that any pressure exerted on the support causes the lowering of the mobile end of one any of said tension levers and hence the spacing of the opposite points of the mating edges of the support.
Any pressure exerted on the support at any point, instead of tending to cause a pocket or the sagging of the edges, on the contrary ensures the tension.
According to one characteristic of the invention, a plurality of pairs of tensioning levers are provided at suitable spacings on the sides of the support.
According to a preferred embodiment applied to a metal bed base, the tensioning levers are articulated on a cross member of the frame of the bed base, provided with two series of openings, any of which receives the articulation axis of the corresponding lever, so as to ensure the adjustment of the tension.
The invention will be better understood with reference to the appended drawing in which:

Each of the tensioning levers is hingedly mounted in one of the holes 4 by an axis, preferably a rivet, the rod of which is crushed on a washer.
It will be understood that each of the tensioning levers 5, 5a is capable of pivoting about its articulation under a prosiod exerted on the canvas, its extracted integral with the. edge of the canvas

<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The risk of localized pressure over part of the length of one of the longitudinal edges cannot raise the mating part of the opposite edge, because a plurality of pairs of levers 5 and 5a are provided. along the length of the bed base, at appropriate spacings.
In order to allow economical manufacture, all the tensioning levers are identical and adapt to the standardized widths of the bed bases, by the arrangement either separate (fig. 3) for two-person bed bases, or in a cross (fig. 4) for the one person box spring.
Of course, the embodiment described and shown and applied to a box spring does not limit the invention in the context of which it is possible to make any modification of detail.
The tensioning device, according to the invention, can moreover also be applied to any kind of furniture or apparatus requiring the tension of an elastic support, such as a wire mesh for example, of which the fixed frame will be. consisting of the piece of furniture or the appliance itself.
