PRODUCTION D'IMAGES COLOREES.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
S= 2 d sin 2 et. (I)

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

PRODUCTION OF COLORFUL IMAGES.
The present invention relates to improvements, changes and additions to that which is the subject of the main patent and relates more particularly to cathode ray tubes intended for color television receivers; it relates more particularly to tubes of this type which, as in the first improvement in the main patent, comprise a perforated electrode, one of the faces of which is covered with bands of fluorescent substances emitting different colors under the excitation of a beam. electronic.
The first improvement to the main patent describes a color television tube equipped with a perforated electrode, as stated above, the spots of fluorescent materials giving a monochrome light emission, said spots being deposited on the face of the tube. the perforated electro- corresponding to the exit of the electrons; the bottom of the bulb of the tube, or a support plate parallel to the perforated electrode, carries a conductive and transparent coating which reflects on the spots of fluorescent materials, the electrons having passed through the openings of said electrode.
When the tube is in operation, a high positive potential is applied to the perforated electrode and a relatively low potential to the reflection electrode, so as to create an antagonistic electric field between the first and second electrodes. This retarding field causes the reflection of the electrons having passed through the openings, from the first and going towards the deflector electrode, so that these electrons fall back on the spots of fluorescent material, excite them and cause an emission of light. , this same field varies so as to cause the selection of colors.
The present improvement describes a cathode ray tube for color television equipped with a perforated electrode of sufficient rigidity and
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
easy to manufacture, so that the drawbacks already mentioned are avoided.
In a color television tube which has a perforated electrode, the distance S between the point of intersection of the path of an electron beam coming out of a perforation and the plane of the outer face on the one hand, and the return point of the same electron on a spot of fluorescent substance on the other hand, is given by the expression:
S = 2 d sin 2 and. (I)
1 -V / V In this formula: d is the distance in centimeters between the perforated and reflective electrodes,
Vc is the potential of the perforated electrode,
Vc is the potential of the reflecting electrode, Ó is the angle of the trajectory of the electron beam exiting a perforation with the normal to the perforated electrode.
It is evident from expression (I) that any variation of d entails a variation of S. It follows that, if the perforated electrode is subjected to vibrations or deformations which determine modifications local variations or overall variations of the distance d, the control of the return path of the electrons to the perforated cover will be disturbed, so that the spots of fluorescent material will not be excited in accordance with the correct operating mode. of the tube.
Current metalworking techniques lead to the use of tweezed metal sheets to construct perforated electrodes of the type described. Structures that are easily deformable and very sensitive to vibrations are thus obtained. The devices and manufacturing processes, which should be used to obtain the increase in the rigidity of these structures, complicate the manufacture of cathode-ray tubes for color television and increase their price of returns.
According to the present improvement, the perforated electrode is a plate of plastic material metallized on its faces and coated, on the side of the reflecting electrode, with concentric bands of fluorescent substances. The plastic material used is amorphous and becomes crystalline after exposure to ultra-violet rays; sensitive to the action of certain chemical agents such as hydrofluoric acid, it becomes practically insensitive to them after exposure to ultraviolet radiation. This phenomenon is taken advantage of to obtain the perforations of the plate of plastic material after exposure to ultraviolet rays, behind a mask, and subsequent attack with hydrofluoric acid.
In order to better understand the characteristics and advantages of the invention, an exemplary embodiment thereof will be described, it being understood that this is in no way limiting as regards the embodiments of the invention or the applications. that we can do.

FIG. 1 shows a cathode ray tube produced according to the present improvement, the casing 11 of which consists essentially of a hemispherical portion 12 to which are attached a transparent spherical face which allows the observation of the 'image reproduced by the tube and the neck 14 arranged relative to 13 on the other side of 12. The neck 14 is formed of a cylinder, containing the cathode and the electron gun constituting the assembly 16, extended by a cone.
The focusing coil
17 on the one hand, the horizontal and vertical deflection devices 18 &
19 on the other hand, are suitably arranged to cause a correct scanning of the electrode structure on which the image is reproduced and which is represented at 21 During the movements of the electron beam, during the scanning, it seems to come from a point 22 located on the axis of the tube and at the intersection of the median planes of the deflection coils.
The cathode ray tubes for color television produced according to the present improvement, such as that represented in FIG. 1, are equipped with an electrode structure 21, of a new type, allowing the reproduction of the images. The structure 21, as can be seen in more detail in FIG. 2, comprises a perforated plate 23 of plastic material, the faces of which are metallized, bearing on the face which constitutes the screen of the tube and is directed towards the direction opposite to the cathode, on the one hand bands of fluorescent materials giving a monochrome light emission and, on the other hand, a reflective electrode 29 arranged parallel to the plate 23 behind it and causing the reflection towards it , on the bands of fluorescent material, electrons which crossed it.
This electrode 29 consists of a layer of transparent material serving as a support for a layer of transparent conductive material 30. The plastics material plate 23 is of relatively large thickness and comprises a set of conical openings. 24 carried out in such a way that the extensions of the axes of each opening are concurrent with point 22 already defined. The process for obtaining the conical perforations 24 depends on the particular characteristics of the plastic material of which the plate 23 is made; it will be described later *. The term "plastic material" used to denote the constituent of the mask, should be taken in its broadest sense including all materials of this type obtained by chemical synthesis, including glasses.
The perforated plastic plate is covered with a conductive coating such as aluminum on both sides; one of them also comprises a set of bands of fluorescent substances 27, 26 and 28, preferably arranged in concentric arcs regularly distributed between the rows of openings 24.
FIG. 3 represents, on a large scale, a front view of a portion of the surface of the electrode 23 directed towards the bottom 13 of the tube.
We distinguish the opening of the perforations 24 and the concentric bands of fluorescent substances 26, 27 & 28 interposed between the rows of also concentric openings.
The plastic material which constitutes the element 23 of the perforated electrode must be sensitive to the action of light. The plastic material referred to as "photoform glass" can be used. This substance has an amorphous structure and is transparent to ultraviolet rays. Exposure to ultraviolet light of this substance, followed by baking, gives it a crystalline structure. A part of said plastics material which has been partially exposed to ultra-rays.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
purple, then immersed in a hydrofluoric acid bath, will preferably be attacked in its parts not exposed to ultra-violet light.
It has been experimentally determined that the attack time of the exposed parts is about fifty times that of the unexposed parts. Thanks to this property, it is easy to manufacture the electrode 23 which is perforated with openings whose axes coincide at the same point.
FIG. 4 illustrates a method of manufacturing the perforated electrode using the property described above. A plate of plastic material, sensitive to ultraviolet rays, of the desired thickness, is covered with a cover 31 which only masks the openings of future perforations.
The cover 31 is pierced with openings arranged regularly along concentric arcs. The source of ultraviolet rays 33 which occupies the center of a transparent spherical envelope, is arranged on the same side of the plastic plate as the cover 31 on the perpendicular to the plane of the surface of the element 23, in contact with 31, passing through the center 32 of the concentric arcs along which the openings of 31 are arranged. Thus, the source 33 occupies, with respect to 23, the position of the point 22 which is the point of intersection of the trajectories of the electrons which pass through the openings, of the perforated electrode of the finished tube.
Since the electrons and the ultraviolet rays follow rectilinear trajectories, the ultraviolet rays coming from the source 33 and passing through the openings of the cover 31 cause a modification of the structure of the plastic material which becomes practically insensitive to the light. action of hydrofluoric acid; the parts of 23 exposed to ultra-violet radiation constitute the solid parts of the perforated electrode, while the shadow cast by the cover 31 determines, in the mass 23, the location of the future perforations.
The refractive index of the plastic material of which 23 is made is different from 1; as a result, if the surrounding medium 23 is air, the ultraviolet rays from 33 undergo refraction when they enter 23 at the air-plastic separation surface.
For this reason, the source of ultraviolet rays is enclosed in a transparent spherical envelope of which it occupies the center, the source 33-envelope and plastic plate assembly is immersed in a transparent medium. to ultra-violet rays with the same refractive index as 23.
When the manufacture of the perforated electrode is completed, the latter is mounted in the tube of FIG. 1, so that the position of the point of intersection of the electronic trajectories is identical to those of the source 33 during the exposure to ultraviolet rays.
Electrons following straight paths passing through 22 will pass through the cone-shaped openings of 23.
After exposure to ultra-violet rays, the element 23 is subjected to the action of a suitable etching bath, so that only the face of 23 to which the cover 31 was attached is subjected to the action of the bath.
A perforated plate of conical openings is obtained, shown in Figure 2. Conductive coatings of aluminum or other metal are formed on both faces of 23, or at least on the one to be disposed, in the plate. Completed tube, to the reflector electrode 29 The metal deposit (s) can be obtained by immersion in a bath or by any other method. Finally, the face of 23 to be turned towards 29 is coated with concentric bands of fluorescent substances of different colors 26, 27, 28.
When the manufacture of the electrode 23 is completed, it is assembled with the electrode 29. For this purpose, U-shaped conductive flanges are arranged at each of the four corners of the structure 21 which is rectangular in shape. . Figure 5 shows one of these flanges. The electrodes 23 & 29 are kept in correct relative positions, with the aid of the spacer blocks 36 & 37 which are of conductive glass of relatively high electrical resistivity on the one hand, and the plate. annular 38 made of a material which is a good conductor of electricity, which serves to ensure a correct arrangement of the structure 21 in the tube, on the other hand.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The block 36 is placed between the face of 29 turned towards the bottom 13 of the tube and one of the branches of the U-shaped flange; the block 37 is placed between the conductive face of 29 and the perforated electrode 23; the annular plate 38 is placed between 23 and the second branch of the U-shaped flange. The various elements assembled by the flange 35 are clamped together by means of a screw 39 bearing on the branch of the flange in contact with the block 36
The structure 21 being assembled, it is fixed in the tube shown in FIG. 1, to the casing 12, by means of several tabs 41 of the annular wedging plate 38. The tabs 41 are arranged along the tops of a equilateral triangle and their end 42 is curved at a right angle (Figures 1 & 6).
These curved parts 42 are screwed and brazed to the casing 12, so that the latter is vacuum tight.
When the tube is in operation, the electrode 23 is brought to the same potential as the casing 12 by means of 38; conductive layer 30 of the reflective electrode 29 is joined to a spring-shaped conductor 43 attached to an insulated spacer 44, supported by a bell-shaped insulator 45 sealed to 44 and the casing 12. The operating potential of 29 is applied to conductor 44.
