<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Dans le seul but de mieux faire comprendre encore les caractéris- tiques de l'invention, certaines exécutions sont décrites ci-après avec ré- férence aux dessins annexés, dans lesquels : les figures 1 et 2 schématisent, en vue de face et en vue de pro- fil, un pneumatique et le sol sous-jacent ; les figures 3 et 4 schématisent, en vue de face et en vue de pro- fil, un pneumatique et l'application du dispositif de l'invention ; les figures 5 et 6 représentent schématiquement en vue latérale et en vue en plan, l'application du dispositif à un véhicule automobile ; les figures 7-8-9-10 schématisent très sommairement des variantes d'exécution ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

METHOD AND DEVICE FOR INCREASING THE ADHESION OF. WHEELS OF A VEHICLE
ON SLIPPERY GROUND.
The invention relates to a new means for increasing the adhesion between the wheels of a motor vehicle and the underlying ground, more particularly in the circumstances where the latter is covered with a layer of ice or snow,
It is known that in cold weather, when the ground is covered with snow or ice, the grip between the wheels and the ground is not only reduced due to the condition of the latter, but also due to the fact that, very generally the tire is covered with a layer of snow or ice forming a real smooth rim.
This has the double drawback of completely obstructing the footprints of the tire, thus rendering them of no use whatsoever and moreover, this envelopment has a practically zero coefficient of adhesion with respect to the underlying ground. As a result, the rolling motion is accompanied by a sliding effect which makes driving extremely dangerous and poses a permanent danger of skidding. We also know the disastrous consequences during the winter period.
The invention relates to a new means making it possible at least to a large extent to avoid these drawbacks and making it possible, on the other hand, to ensure the starting of the vehicle in the many cases where, as a result of freezing, the slipping of the vehicle. wheel on hard ground prevents the vehicle from moving.
The new means, object of the invention, consists in ensuring a supply of calories to the right of the surfaces of which it is necessary to increase the coefficient of adhesion. These calories are supplied by the exhaust gases. The latter can be projected directly onto the suitable surfaces or they can be used for heating air streams duly oriented towards said suitable surfaces. The latter can be located either on the tire, or on the ground, or even on both.
Therefore, according to the invention, the means for increasing the adhesion between the wheel and the ground consists of projecting either on the wheel or on the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
ground, or both on the one and the other, a heating fluid. This projection can advantageously be oriented and adjusted from at least one actuator placed near the driver, for example on the vehicle panel.
The invention also extends to the non-application of such a means with a view to ensuring, at a suitable location of the vehicle, an intake of a heating fluid to which can easily be connected a hose terminated by a lance of a shape. appropriate, the whole being conditioned so as to be able to easily project the hot fluid anywhere on the vehicle and / or on the ground in order to be able to increase the adhesion between the vehicle and the ground. Thus, if the driving wheels are engaged on ice, for example, it would be possible to bring the hose so as to project hot gases or hot air towards the point of contact between said driving wheels and the soil in order to cause softening of the surfaces in contact and thus increase mutual adhesion.
By this simple means, it is very often possible and in relatively comfortable conditions to start the vehicle.
It goes without saying that the means which make it possible to bring the hot gases or hot air to the appropriate places are infinitely variable and the invention obviously extends to all these applications.
For the sole purpose of making the characteristics of the invention even better understood, certain embodiments are described below with reference to the appended drawings, in which: FIGS. 1 and 2 show schematically, in front view and in view. in profile, a tire and the underlying soil; FIGS. 3 and 4 show schematically, in front view and in profile view, a tire and the application of the device of the invention; Figures 5 and 6 schematically show in side view and in plan view, the application of the device to a motor vehicle; FIGS. 7-8-9-10 very briefly show variant embodiments;
FIGS. 11 and 12 show schematically in side view and in plan view the application of a mixed device applied both to the wheel and to the ground; FIG. 13 shows schematically the application of the device to a tractor; FIG. 14 is a schematic representation of a device for adjusting the jet of hot fluid; FIG. 15 shows schematically a variant using the exhaust gases for heating the air.
In Figures 1 and 2, there is shown very schematically a wheel 1 lined with a tire 2, itself wrapped in a layer or crust 3. of ice or snow for example. This wheel rests on a layer of ice or snow 1 ± covering the underlying ground 5. Under these conditions, the adhesion between the wheel and the ground is practically zero.
The method, which is the subject of the invention, consists, as shown diagrammatically in FIGS. 3-4, in spraying either on the tire or on the ground, or at the same time on both, for example through the intervention of a duct 6 , a jet of a hot fluid which aims to melt the snow or ice so as to again cause the indentations 1 to appear on the tire and to soften the surface of the ground so as to promote the grip of the tire. A duct 6 can, for example, as shown diagrammatically in FIGS. 5-6, be connected on either side of the muffler 8 fixed at the end of the exhaust duct 2. coming from the engine . These conduits 6 may be oriented such that the jet is directed towards the contact surface between the tire 2 and the ground 5.
Or, as dry-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Matized in FIG. 7, the heating fluid can, via two conduits 10-11, be launched onto the tire 2 so as to heat the latter to a temperature sufficient to completely free the imprints and possibly even to be heated, by contacting the underlying ground and thus promote adhesion.
In many cases, both the tire 2 and the ground 5 can be stressed by the hot fluid. FIG. 8 is a diagram of such an example in which the fluid supply duct. hot 6 is disposed opposite a deflector 12 capable of directing the hot fluid both towards the tire 2 and towards the contact surface between the latter and the solo The same result could be obtained by terminating the duct 6 by two tubes 13-14 oriented respectively towards the tire 2 and towards the ground 5, these tubes being able to be orientable and controllable at will. The same conduits 6 could moreover, as shown diagrammatically in FIG. 10, be arranged towards the inside of the vehicle wheelbase, so as to orient the jet of hot fluid transversely.
Another embodiment would consist in projecting the hot fluid in front of the driving wheels with or without projection on the tire. This execution would be extremely simple, since it would suffice, as shown diagrammatically in FIGS. 11-12, for example, to move the muffler 15 by pulling it towards the front of the vehicle and to make from said muffler two conduits 16-17 each terminating opposite a driving wheel 2 of the vehicle. The two rectilinear sections of said conduits 16-17 arranged in the median plane of the driving wheels 2 would be internally crossed by a series of orifices, respectively 18-19, thus forming in a way two ramps, ensuring two alignments of hot fluid jets in front of said driving wheels 2.
These can also be stressed by a jet of hot fluid coming from said conduits 16-17, the posterior ends of which it will suffice to keep open.
It is certain that, in this way, a vehicle being, for example, immobilized by snow or by ice, it will very quickly cause the softening, respectively the melting, of the latter at the level of the surfaces arranged in front drive wheels.
Figure 13 shows schematically a similar execution applied to a tractor. We find there the same pipes such as 16-17, coming from the muffler 15 and the same orifices 18-19 oriented downwards in front of the tire 2.
Obviously, the installations will always be completed by a maneuvering device, respectively a control device, allowing either the normal evacuation of the exhaust gases or their diversion towards the device of the invention.
Such a device is shown schematically in FIG. 14. It is obviously described only by way of example and could be produced according to numerous variants. In this case, the exhaust duct 2 ... leads to the traditional muffler 15. From this comes a duct 25 forming, in a way, the extension of the exhaust pipe 9. A second duct, 26, comes from the same muffler 15 and ends opposite the surface onto which the hot fluid must be projected. A drawer 27 provided with an opening 28 is capable of moving opposite the two conduits 25-26.
For this purpose, this drawer is guided upstream and connected to one of the branches of an angled lever 29 capable of rotating about a pivot 30 and the second branch of which is connected by a flexible to an operating button 31 mounted on the switchboard 24 of the vehicle. Depending on the position occupied by said operating button 31, the opening 28 of the spool 27 will be located in relation to either the direct exhaust 25 or the duct 26.
Thus, the hot fluid will be properly directed by this simple maneuver. Also, the section of passage of said fluid and, consequently also, the quantity of hot fluid projected towards the surfaces to be heated will be duly regulated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In all these embodiments, the direct projection of exhaust gases has been more especially considered, however, in all the cases envisaged, it is also possible to use air heated by said exhaust gases. .
Such an execution is shown diagrammatically in FIG. 15 in which the exhaust tube 2 is, over part of its length, surrounded by a sleeve 20. This sleeve is, towards the front, provided with a socket. air 21 directed towards the motor 22 and equipped by un'dispositif electric adjustment controlled, for example., the intervention of an operating button 23 mounted on the panel -4 of the vehicle. At its other end, the jacket 20 is, for example, provided with nozzles such as 13-14 of the type described in the example of FIG. 9.
We will thus obtain that the air passing through the jacket 20 around the exhaust pipe 9 will be strongly heated and evacuated in two oriented jets, respectively on the tire 2 and on the underlying ground 2 ... the air 21 can be adjusted in proportion to the temperature of the air passing through the jacket 20 or in any other way. On the other hand, the quantity of air conveyed towards said jacket 20 can be controlled by the operation in the appropriate direction of the button 23.
These different executions will obviously be supplemented by all the accessories generally of any kind intended to be able to put the device on or off, in order to be able to judiciously orient the hot fluid streams.
The invention extends both to devices mounted during the construction of the vehicle and to installations or parts of installations capable of being attached to the vehicles in order to equip them in accordance with the invention. For this purpose, it is possible to provide, on the vehicle, more especially on the exhaust gas tube or on any member in relation to said exhaust gas tube, a plug or mouth or connector such as it is. it is possible to quickly fix a removable conduit therein, for example a flexible hose, the mouth of which can be brought opposite the surface or surfaces to be heated.
There will thus have been an accessory forming part of the equipment of the motor vehicle and capable of being used at the opportune times. This outlet may be such that, by the very fact of fixing the removable duct, the partial or total bypass of the exhaust gases or of the air heated by said exhaust gases is automatically caused, so that instead to follow the normal circuit, it follows the removable conduit thus adapted. -
The invention therefore extends to all applications and generally any executions of the device of the invention.
