<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS TO OPTICAL PROJECTION DEVICES.
The present invention relates to optical apparatus for projecting a converging or diverging light beam in a particular direction or projection axis; its object is to establish an improved apparatus of this type.
The invention applies more particularly to light signals used in railways or to other similar uses; in these signals, the light supplied by an electric lamp must be concentrated and projected in a beam of substantially parallel rays or in a conical beam, so that the light rays or a surface illuminated by them are visible throughout the space included in a viewing angle determined from the projection axis? the present invention makes it possible to achieve this aim in a particularly efficient and practical manner.
It has already been proposed to concentrate, according to a parallel or conical beam, the light emitted by a light source, by using reflective surfaces or mirrors. In accordance with the invention, these reflecting surfaces are constituted in whole or in part by the internal surface (s) of one or more transparent bodies of suitable shape, so that the reflection of the light takes place inside. of this or these body (s), the reflected light being transmitted through the transparent material to form an external light beam or to illuminate a surface arranged perpendicular to the optical axis of the apparatus. Reflective surfaces being interior are not affected by atmospheric conditions, and can maintain high efficiency at all times.
The material constituting the transparent body is preferably the plastic material sold commercially under the trademark "Perspex".
The invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawing in which
Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are schematic views showing
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
in cut side elevation various optical systems in accordance with the invention and intended for railway signals or other similar uses.
Figure 6 is a schematic front view of the optical system of Figure 5.
Figures 7 and 8 show schematically, in cutaway side elevation, two other optical systems similar to that of Figure 3, but comprising certain modifications and additions in relation thereto.
If we first consider Figure 1, we see that in this embodiment the light source consists of an electric incandescent lamp 1 mounted inside a cavity 2, hollowed out at the top of a block. 3 of "Perspex", having the shape of a solid paraboloid, the filament 4 of the lamp is placed at the focus of the paraboloid whose axis coincides with the desired projection axis.
In this arrangement, the light rays emitted by the filament of the lamp and reaching the interior surface of the paraboloid formed by the block of "Perspex" are reflected on this surface to form a beam that is substantially parallel or concentrated as indicated by the lines. dotted line and arrows. In order to use the rays emitted beyond the block 3 and behind the latter, a semi-spherical reflector 5 is arranged behind the lamp 1 with its center of curvature placed on the filament of the latter.
Since this paraboloid block 3 has a limited axial length, a central and axial cone of light rays coming from the source passes through the block without undergoing reflection; in order to concentrate some of these rays in a substantially parallel beam, it is possible to provide a suitable lens 6 disposed, as seen in FIG. 2, on the front surface 7 of the block, or near this surface, the lens 6 preferably forming an integral part of the surface 7 as is the case in FIG. 2.
In another embodiment shown in FIG. 3, the transparent block consists of a number of hollow, cup-shaped parabolids or shells, 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d, housed coaxially within each other; the light penetrating through the adjacent ends of the different elements of the transparent body is reflected on the inner surface of each element so as to be projected in hollow and substantially cylindrical beams as indicated by the dotted lines and the arrows. The angle at the top of the central cone formed by the rays emitted directly by the filament of the lamp 4 and not undergoing reflection is considerably reduced in this embodiment.
One can, if desired, concentrate a part of the light rays of this central cone by using a central lens as in the case of figure 2 or else a central core 8 in the form of a paraboloid which carries out the concentration of these rays. by internal reflection.
A colored beam can be obtained by coloring at least one of the entry and exit faces of the transparent block or the material constituting this block or by using colored screens placed either on one side or on the other of the block. projection.,
The devices according to the invention and described above are designed to project a beam of substantially parallel light rays from a concentrated light source such as an electric lamp filament; devices of this kind are particularly interesting for the realization of the railway signals of the long-range type, also called "projectors" in which the signal must be visible at a relatively large distance and in a relatively small viewing angle.
The present invention can, however, be applied also to optical projection apparatus of the type in which a surface is to be brightly and uniformly illuminated so as to be visible in a wide viewing angle, as is the case in signals. so called close range.
In a device of this type, in accordance with the invention, and shown in FIG. '' 4, the transparent block is composed of hollow elements 9a, 9b,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
9c, 9d in the shape of a paraboloid and housed one inside the other; the block is interposed between the surface to be illuminated and the light source. This can consist, as in FIG. 4, of an electric incandescent lamp 1, the bulb of which can be transparent, frosted or opalescent; in any case, the elements 9a, 9b etc ... making up the transparent block have shapes and dimensions such that the light rays emitted by the lamp are reflected several times on the interior surfaces of the elements which thus direct rays towards the surface to be illuminated.
It is also possible to have an opalescent or frosted surface interposed 'between the lamp' and the transparent unit and produced either by a special screen or by the entrance face itself of the projection unit 3.
The central part of the composite block is constituted by a core 10 of "perspex" in the form of a paraboloid which completes by internal reflection the full illumination of the surface, the latter possibly being in the form of a glass cover (not shown). ) having a lenticular or prismatic shape. This surface to be illuminated can be formed by the very exit face of the projection unit, which face is then frosted or opalescent, or by a frosted screen. @
In another embodiment shown in Figures 5 and 6, the composite transparent block, the outer surface of which takes the shape of a paraboloid, is composed of a certain number of segments 11 assembled together like the blades of a dynamo manifold, each sectional segment having the shape of a wedge.
The transparent block is easily subdivided into radial planes and the light rays entering each segment 11, from the side of the lamp 1 or from any other light source, are reflected several times inside the segment, and exit therefrom. to illuminate the glass cover constituting the signal or any other similar surface located at the other end of the transparent block.
As in the embodiments described above, the central part of the block is constituted by a core 12 having the shape of a paraboloid.
In other embodiments, which may be suitable for both long-range and short-range signals, the composite transparent block consists of a sheet of "Perspex" or similar material wound in a spiral. so as to form a paraboloid, the thickness of the sheet varying transversely in the appropriate direction so as to obtain the desired final shape.
The transparent block can also be formed from a bundle of bevelled rods bent and assembled so as to close a paraboloid, each rod forming a guide channel serving to conduct the light rays from the source to the opposite end of the tube. transparent body by internal reflection occurring inside the rods.
In the optical signaling system of FIG. 7, it can be seen that the paraboloid 13 is made as in FIGS. 3 or 4, the front surface 14 of the block 13 however having a concave shape in order to eliminate the known effect. under the name of "ghost effect". For this purpose, it is also possible to provide the exit face of the transparent block with an inclined transparent screen.
The optical system shown in Figure 7 also includes arrangements providing a rear light; a rod or block 15 of "Perspex" is mounted in the signal box above the lamp 1, in a position such as the inner end 16 of this rod, which end is inclined at 45 with respect to the axis horizontal of the rod, or placed vertically above the filament 4 of the lamp. The opposite end 17 of the rod 15 is perpendicular to the horizontal axis thereof, the surfaces of which, with the exception of the face '17 and a part 18 of the lower surface, are surrounded. by a housing 19 which prevents any light outside the device from entering the rod.
All surfaces of rod 15 are perfectly polished so as to allow internal reflection, with the exception of end face 17 which is preferably roughened or otherwise treated to increase.

lie the scattering of light.
The end face 17 of the rod 15 is disposed opposite an opening 20 of the housing 21 of the signal. It is evident that the light rays emitted by the filament 4 of the lamp and passing through the part 18 of the rod 15 are reflected internally on the end face 16 and on the other interior surfaces of the rod. To illuminate end 17, as indicated by the dotted lines and arrows.
Since the rod 15 can be mounted relatively close to the lamp 1, a sufficiently bright illumination of the end surface 17 is obtained, which appears as a tail light through the opening 20.
In the modified optical system of FIG. 8, the two inner and outer end faces 16 and 17 of the rod 15 are perpendicular to the horizontal axis of this rod, which axis passes through the filament 4 of the lamp.
An annular reflector 22, the reflecting surface of which has the shape of an ellipsoid having one of its focal points on the filament of the lamp.
4, is arranged around the transparent block 13 of the optical system, the other focus of the reflecting surface of the reflector 22 being at a point 23 inside the rod 15.
The light rays coming from the filament 4 of the lamp are thus concentrated at the focus 23 and come to illuminate, by internal reflection, the end face 17 of the rod 15 which scatters the light.
An opaque screen 24 is interposed between the lamp 1 and the rod 15 for the purpose of preventing daylight from entering through the opening 20 and producing a false signal through the block 13.
Although, in the devices, described and represented above, the transparent block has the fame of a paraboloid, either full or composed of a certain number of shells or cups threaded into each other, it is understood that in in some cases the transparent block may have the shape of an ellipsoid, a hyperboloid or even a cone, and may be composed of a number of shells or cups having any of these geometric shapes.
The transparent projection block is not necessarily a body of revolution, - it can have a non-circular conical section in planes parallel to a given plane and sections which can be parabolic, elliptical, hyperbolic, conical or cylindrical, in the planes perpendicular to this given plane.
It is obvious that the present invention is not limited to a particular embodiment and that the devices described and represented above are given only by way of example.
