"PROCESS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF PHOTOGRAPHIC EMULSIONS".

This invention relates to a process for the manufacture of photographic emulsions, and more particularly to a process for the manufacture of photographic silver halide emulsions having increased light sensitivity.

It is known to increase the general sensitivity of photographic emulsions by the use of polyvalent inorganic bases such as, for example, stannates, the amount of bases used being such that in all probability the pH of the emulsion is affected.

We have now found that the general sensitivity of photo-graphic silver halide emulsions can be markedly enhanced by the addition of small amounts of inorganic or organic tin compounds such as stannous salts (e.g. stannous chloride), stannites (e.g. sodium stannite), chlorotin ( II) hour or chlorotin (IV) acid and their inorganic or organic salts, double salts or complexes, such as sodium, um-chlorostannite, quinolinium chlorostannite or pyridinium chlorostannate.

The addition of the tin compound can be done before, during or after the aging of the emulsion.

In addition to the tin compounds of the present invention, the emulsion may also contain the common addition products such as hardeners, stabilizers, spreading agents, preservatives, chemical sensitizers, optical sensitizers, or super sensitizing combinations.

The following examples illustrate the invention without limiting it in the least.

  Example 1 -
The sensitivity of a silver bromo-iodide emulsion, which contains 0.3 mol of silver halide per kg of emulsion, is noticeably increased by the use of 5 mg / kg of quinolinium chlorostannite.

 Example 2
The sensitivity of a silver bromo-iodide emulsion containing 0.3 mole silver halide per kg emulsion is markedly increased by the use of 0.2 mg / kg chlorotin (II) acid.

  Example 3:
The sensitivity of a silver bromo-iodide emulsion containing 0.3 mole silver halide per kg of emulsion is markedly increased by the use of 0.5 mg / kg sodium stannite. Example 4
The general sensitivity of a panchromatic silver bromo-iodide emulsion containing 0.3 mole silver halide and 30 mg per kg of emulsion
 EMI2.1
bis2 (3-methylbenzthiazole) alpha-methyltrnethinecyanine iodide. is noticeably boosted by the use of 5 mg / kg of quinolinium chlorostannite.
