<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY
SUBMITTED IN SUPPORT OF A REQUEST
OF INVENTION PATENT Mr. Bror Gottfrid P L S S 0 N Improvements to washing machines. Swedish patent application in his favor of November 15, 1943.
The invention relates to washing machines operated by a motor or other control mechanism. For effective cleaning the treatment of the laundry in the washing machine itself, which usually has an agitator, is often insufficient, and treatment of the laundry or rubbing of the laundry is roughly the same. same way as with a laundry board is necessary. To this end, the laundry is treated outside the washing machine proper by means of scrubbing devices actuated by machines, called rubbing boards or soaking devices.
The invention relates to a combination of the latter type of apparatus and the washing machine, such that a separate drive motor is not required for the scrubbing apparatus. A considerable simplification and economy is thus obtained, since this device generally operates at the same time as the washing machine, and for this reason the two devices are operated in common. To this end, according to the invention, one or more scrubbing devices are actuated or capable of being actuated by means of a control transmission directly or indirectly by the same control mechanism which also actuates the washing machine. This transmission of control can be carried out in different ways, as will be seen from the following.
Preferably, but not necessarily, the washing machine is provided with a wringer, which is also actuated by the same control mechanism and which in turn can transmit the movement to the scrubber, which will be explained in the description. below, which also indicates especially suitable embodiments of the rubbing apparatus in connection with the latter combination.
The drawings show some embodiments of the invention. Fig. 1 shows an exterior view, partly in section, of the washing machine as well as of the wringer attached to it and of the apparatus for rubbing or treating the laundry. Figs. 2 and 3 show two different embodiments of the rubbing or treatment member itself, FIG. 4 an embodiment of the rubbing device with its clutch and the connection to the control mechanism, FIGS. 5 and 6 show respectively a vertical section and a plan view of another embodiment of the rubbing apparatus, and FIG. 7 a variant of this device, shown somewhat schematically. Fig. 8 is a sectional view of another embodiment of the driving force transmission mechanism for the rubbing apparatus.
Fig. 9 also shows a variant of the washing machine with the wringer and the scrubber, and Fig. 10
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
shows another embodiment of the relative arrangement of these parts.
As can be seen from FIG. l, the washing machine itself consists of a tank 1, preferably fixed while the machine is in operation, which is intended to receive the laundry and the washing or rinsing liquid, and which is provided with one or more agitating members , for example a rotating or reciprocating member (agitator) 2 with possibly perforated vanes or fins (see also fig. 9). The agitator member 2 receives its movement from a shaft 3 which is mounted in a housing 4, and which is connected to a transmission mechanism 5 (fig. 9), actuated by a motor 6 or by another driving force. . Preferably the whole washing machine is movable on casters, but it can also be fixed.
The tank 1 can be provided with a cover, or it can also be open at the top, as shown in the drawings.
To a suitable part of the washing machine a wringer 8 can be attached, preferably so that the wringer overhangs the tank 1, so that the expressed liquid can flow directly into the tank 1. The wringer can have the construction known from rollers 9 and can optionally be operated by hand or by a separate motor shaft. Preferably however the es-. soreuse will be operated from the mechanism or transmission housing 5, for example by means of a shaft 10 (fig. 9), which is mounted in a frame 11 intended for the wringer, and which at its lower end is connected by means of a drive wheel 12 and a belt or chain 13 to a drive wheel 14 take the driving force at a suitable location of the transmission housing 5.
The transmission 12, 13, 14 can be replaced by another transmission, or the shaft 10 can be in direct connection with the driving power take-off of the transmission housing. A control lever 16 connected to the transmission casing 15 of the wringer may be provided respectively for starting or stopping and reversing the running of the wringer rollers. The wringer as a whole can be easily removed from the frame 11, or it can be rotated around this frame by actuating a locking member 17.
According to fig. 1 the wringer is further equipped with a treatment or scrubbing apparatus for the laundry. This appliance must perform the same functions as a laundry board although the work is done mechanically. The apparatus need not necessarily be located near the wringer but may also be supported by another part of the washer or may be attached to a support or similar device separate from it, which will be described later. It is, however, essential that the appliance be operated by the same motive source as the washing machine, which is achieved by the fact that said appliance is in control in one way or another with the washing machine. engine 6 or by a special transmission or by the transmission housing 5.
In the latter case, the transmission housing may have a separate drive power take-off for the rubbing device or the latter may also be actuated by the drive power take-off for the drive wheel 14 or by that for the shaft 3, as will be described later, or also by a part connected to this shaft 3, or to the shaft 10, respectively.
The rubbing device can also be actuated by a driving power take-off from the transmission casing 5 or from another controlled part, connected to the wringer.
An example of the latter possibility is shown in fig. 1, where one of the rollers 9 of the wringer is in control with the working member 18 (eg a roller) by means of a shaft extension 19 or otherwise. The rubbing device is preferably provided with a protective cover 20, and the laundry to be treated will be introduced between the moving roller, preferably grooved and a counter-support
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
21, for example in the form of a plate, which is preferably fluted or corrugated, and which a spring urges towards the roller 18. The washing liquid, which is expressed by the work of the scrubber, can flow out in the tank 1 by a chute 23.
The mechanically operated treatment apparatus described herein can be performed in various ways, a few of which will be mentioned by way of example. Thus FIG. 2 shows the roller 18 itself, which is provided at its periphery with ribs or grooves, for example made of rubber, artificial resin, soft or other flexible or elastic material. The ribs can also be replaced or supplemented by brushes etc. The counter-support plate 21 is in this case preferably made of sheet metal, porcelain or the like, relatively hard. Fig. 2 shows how the laundry 24 is introduced into the apparatus and preferably guided by a tension member 25 in the form of a roller, which among other things has the purpose of preventing soil loosened from the laundry from accompanying the same.
The backing plate 21 is mounted so as to be able to yield, thanks to the springs 22, the pressure of which can, if necessary, be adjusted by appropriate members. A trigger 26 is provided, to allow if necessary the support 27 of the spring 22 to pivot, to make the space between the roller 18 and the support board 21 more accessible.
According to fig. 3-the roller 18 can be made of sheet metal, metal, porcelain or other hard material, while the counter-support member 28 is made in this case preferably of rubber or other soft material. An adjustable pressure can be produced without a spring, for example by means of an eccentric 29 which acts on a guide member 30, articulated to the plate 28, the latter being able to pivot at its other end. These provisions can obviously be amended in various ways.
Fig. 4 shows an embodiment, according to which the scrubbing apparatus is actuated from the transmission housing 5 of the washer or that of the wringer. For this purpose, said casing comprises an axis 31 for the power take-off. This axis is provided with a clutch, for example a claw clutch 32, by which the axis can be placed in control connection with the shaft 19 of the roller 18 of the wringer.
Below the counter-support plate 21, a trough 33 can be placed for retaining a certain quantity of washing liquid, which improves the action of the scrubbing apparatus. The trough 33 can be provided with an overflow 34, through which the liquid can flow to the tank 1, or to another place.
In all embodiments, the rubbing device can be made removable, for example by a bayonet locking 35.
The shaft of the scrubber does not necessarily have to be horizontal, but can also be tilted or vertical.
An example of the vertical arrangement is shown in figs.5 and 6. The friction member 36 here cooperates with a counter-support 37 and is connected to a vertical control shaft 38. The lower surface of the member 36, likewise, the upper surface of the counter-support is preferably ribbed, grooved or uneven.
The necessary application pressure can be obtained by a spring 39, which actuates a bearing support 41 for the pivoting member 36 at 40. A detent 42 similar to the detent 26 may be provided.
The shape, surface constitution, size and speed of movement of the scrubber will vary with the circumstances, so that the laundry is treated effectively.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
tee but however without resulting any damage. The speed as well as the direction of movement can be made variable. In certain cases it may be useful to also actuate the counter-support, which will be carried out with a different speed and a different direction of movement than those of the roller 18. The movement, which if necessary can be combined with a movement of pressure or mutual ramming of the working member and the counter-support, does not necessarily have to be rotary, but can also be a reciprocating rotational motion or an reciprocating sliding motion.
An example of the latter movement is shown in fig. 7, in which the friction member 43, which is suitably guided, is connected to a crank mechanism 44, actuated by a shaft 45.
The sliding or alternating rotational movement of the rubbing member can be obtained by placing the latter in a control connection with the driving power take-off of the transmission housing 5 for the shaft 3, in case of the latter. reciprocates, which is the most common case. One can for example for this purpose, according to fig. 8, provide a bevel gear transmission for the shaft 19 of the scrubber 18, and connect this transmission to the vertical shaft, for example 46, yes is mounted in a support 48 attached to a suitable part of the washer , and which is in control connection with the driving power take-off for the shaft 3 or with another reciprocating part of the transmission housing 5 or with the shaft 3 itself.
If it is desired that the member 18 has a rotational movement, the shaft 47 will be connected to the wheel 14 (FIG. 9) or to another rotating part.
Fig. 9 shows another variant of the rubbing member, which consists of a body 49 having more or less the shape of a disc or a mushroom cap which cooperates with a counter-support 50 and which is connected from similar way to what fig. 8, to a shaft 47 mounted in a support 48. The shaft 47 can be provided with a coupling member 51 and is connected at its lower part to a control wheel 52, which is actuated for example by means of a chain or belt 53 from a control wheel 54 located on the same axis as the control wheel 14.
If instead the control wheel 54 is arranged on the agitator shaft 3, this results in a reciprocating movement of the rubbing member 49.
Fig. 10 finally shows an embodiment, where the rubbing member 55, which for example may be a brush, if necessary removable, cooperates with a backing plate 56, preferably having the shape of a fluted board , which is mounted on a table 57 or other base, completely separate from the washing machine itself. The member 55 is provided with a handle 58 so that it can be driven by hand along the items of laundry lying on the board 56. As with the other embodiments, the member member 55 is actuated by the same source of movement as the washing machine, which is obtained for the embodiment shown in FIG. 10 by means of a driving power take-off 59 to the transmission casing 15 of the wringer 8.
This driving power take-off, which can be provided with a disconnectable coupling, is connected with the friction member by means of a flexible shaft 60 (or where appropriate by means of a rigid shaft, if on its side the laundry board 56 is movable).
Apart from the embodiments shown and described in particular, many other variants of the subject of the invention can be produced without thereby departing from the invention.
