<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

"Slow distillation furnace for the production of tar-free fuels."
The increasing use of gasifiers for fueling internal combustion engines creates a great need for tar-free fuels. In this category, particular consideration should be given to bo coals, peat coke, cokes from lignites with low ash content, lignites, kiliths, etc. Its fuels are normally produced in large installations from raw materials (wood, peat, lignite low in ash, etc.) by dry distillation, or slow distillation (also known as low temperature distillation).
The invention described below now gives the consumer the possibility of easily and inexpensively manufacturing the fuel for his own relatively low personal consumption.
According to the invention, a slow distillation furnace is used to manufacture tar-free fuels.

constituted by a closed tank above and provided, below, with a perforated bottom, tank around which circulate the combustion gases. It is advantageous that the bottom perforated is. removable and constructed so that it can be removed from the masonry oven.
The schematic drawing shows in Figure 1 an exemplary embodiment of an installation or apparatus for carrying out the method in section along A-A and in Figure 3 in section perpendicular to the first.
The slow distillation installation consists for example of a tank 1 made of sheet iron, preferably rectangular in cross section, which is closed above and provided below with a removable bottom 2 perforated like a sieve. Tubes 3 have been welded at suitable distances in the tank which serve on the one hand as spacer bolts to make the assembly rigid and on the other hand cause better distribution of heat inside the tank.
On the cover of the reservoir, two U-shaped irons, 4, to which the reservoir is suspended in the masonry oven 6, have been fitted, as well as handles for hooking up a device for removing the reservoir from above. The oven 6 has in its upper part a hearth provided with a supply door 7, a scrub door 8 and a grid 9. At the top, the oven is closed by a sheet metal cover 10 with seal. sand 11. Through the outlet pipes 12, the combustion gases are discharged into a chimney.
The low temperature distillation material is placed in suitable fragments in the withdrawn and inverted tank, the sieve bottom is then put in place and the tank suspended in the furnace and the lid closed. A fire of a fuel chosen at will is kept in the hearth. Under the effect of heat, the water contained in the material to be slowly distilled is first expelled, and gradually combustible slow distillation gases are released, which. must come out from the bottom through the sieve bottom and mix there with. the air entering through the grille, light up at the fireplace and burn off. It is then unnecessary to continue to supply the stove with fresh fuel, because the distillation gases alone are sufficient to operate the entire distillation.
When the distillation gases are no longer given off and the flame goes out, the slow distillation is finished. The tank is then removed from the oven and placed with its bottom in a sieve on a pile of sand so as to prevent the entry of air into the tank and ignition of the distillation gas.

slow. The tank is then allowed to cool and at the same time another freshly filled one is placed in the bottom.
In most cases, then, the heat stored in the masonry suffices to initiate the slow distillation and hence the release of combustible gases, thanks to which the heating is continued. As long as these gases do not ignite spontaneously on contact with hot walls, a small ignition flame is sufficient to produce combustion.
With this slow distillation furnace, the production of tar-free fuels is carried out according to the invention in such a way that the complete slow distillation of the materials introduced into the furnace is carried out essentially by the formation of combustible slow distillation gases, in the material to be distilled itself, which leave the furnace at the bottom, ignite in this place, then bathe the furnace on the outside and escape.
