 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 5>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 6>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 7>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 8>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 9>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 10>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 11>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 12>

 <Desc/Clms Page number 13>

 Improvements to fireplaces heated with atomized fuel.

   The present invention relates to installations for heating water vapor or other vapors, in particular fireplaces heated with pulverized fuel, and its aim is to allow a significant reduction in the temperature of the hearth, while maintaining a high percentage of CO2 in combustion products. A more precise object of the invention is to provide fireplaces heated with pulverized fuel and operating at temperatures such that the deterioration of the refractory material walls is slow, which makes it possible to use relatively simple fireplaces, having no walls. with water circulation, and whose construction

 <Desc / Clms Page number 3>

 and installation are inexpensive.

   Another object of the invention is the creation of inexpensive and safe independent heating steam heaters or superheaters. The invention is particularly useful in its application to heaters for reheating steam between stages of a turbine, since the independently heated heater not only allows the degree of reheating to be precisely controlled, but also makes possible. also an economy of tubular conduits and reduces the energy of the steam contained in the condui ts.

   The invention encompasses a method of heating by means of pulverized fuel the hearth of a heater of water vapor or other vapors, the method comprising mixing with the primary air flue gases at a temperature substantially lower than that. of the hearth, in a proportion insufficient to extinguish the flame, and to mix with another quantity of combustion air the burnt gases also having a temperature appreciably lower than that of the hearth and in a proportion greater than that of the gases mixed with the primary air, but still insufficient to significantly affect the rational combustion of the fuel.

   The invention also relates to an installation for heating water vapor or other vapors, such an installation comprising a hearth, a pulverized fuel burner, means of mixing with the primary air an adjustable proportion of gas. burnt gases having a temperature substantially lower than that of the hearth, and means for mixing with another quantity of combustion air supplied to the hearth another proportion, independently adjustable, of burnt gases also having a temperature appreciably lower than that of the hearth.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 4>

   An exemplary embodiment of the invention will be described below with reference to the appended drawing which shows, in vertical section, an installation for the production and heating of steam. For convenience, the section has been divided into three figures numbered 1, 2 and 3. Figure 4 shows a variation of some parts of the heater hearth shown in Fig. 3.

   The steam generator shown in FIG. 1 and the heater shown in Fig. 5 are arranged so that their combustion products pass together through the economizer and through the air heater shown in FIG. 2.

   The most important parts of the steam generator according to Fig. 1 are clearly shown, while certain other parts, which are not essential for the understanding of the invention, are omitted or shown schematically. In Fig. 1, we see pulverized charcoal burners 1 which flow into a water-cooled fireplace 2 and having opposite walls 3 and 4 whose cooling tubes are joined by collectors 5, 6, 7 and 8 inserted into the system traffic. The wall 9 seen from the front in the drawing is cooled by tubes connecting a lower manifold 10 to upper manifolds 11 and 12, and a similar arrangement is adopted to cool the wall opposite to the wall 9. All these manifolds are united in one. circulation system.

   A bundle of slightly inclined steam generator tubes 13 is supported above the hearth, and these tubes are connected to the water and steam body 14 by down tubes 15 and up tubes 16 connected to the collectors 17 and 18, respectively. - is lying. In the space between the tubes 15 and 16 run other upright tubes 19 and 20 cooperating with chucks which,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 5>

 with baffles attached to tubes 15 and 16, force the combustion products of the hearth to rise through sections 21 and 22 of the superheater, after having passed through the bundle of tubes 13, then down again through the economizer sections 23 and 24 to exit 25 (Figs. 1 and 2).

  A valve 26 controls the passage 27 between the baffles attached to the tubes 19 and 20, this passage constituting an adjustable bypass bypassing the superheater. A control device 28 enables the valve to be manually adjusted for setting or adjusting the degree of superheating. The valve 26 could also be controlled automatically.

   Coming from the body 14, the steam intended to be superheated descends through the superheater 22, 21 and becomes available at 29.

   The walls 3 and 4 converge at their lower end so as to form a hopper bottom above the pit 30 in which the slag is deposited.

   It can be seen in FIG. 2 that the gases passing through the outlet 25 enter a space 31 where gases also flow from the heater. The gases from the steam generator as well as those from the heater then rise together through the heat exchangers which have new economizer sections 32 and 33 as well as an air heater 34. Above. From this, the combined gases are sucked by means of an induced draft fan (not shown).

   Part of the dust transported by the gases passing through the outlet 25 is deposited at the bottom of the space 31.

   According to Fig. 3, the hearth 51 of the heater has walls and a sky of refractory bricks 53, and it is heated by two pulverized fuel burners 53, the section shown in FIG. 3 passing through one of these burners. Fuel is supplied to these burners

 <Desc / Clms Page number 6>

 by the pulverizer 54. Preheated air and cooled gases are also injected into the hearth of the heater as will be described later.

   The gases leaving the hearth rise through the sections 55, 56 and 57 of the heater, then pass laterally, through an opening 58 which can be closed by registers 59, into the space 31 (Fig. 2) and from there they rise, with the gases coming from the generator, through sections 32 and 33 of the economizer and the air heater 34. The vapor intended to be reheated is brought into the tube 60, then passes through the section 55 of the heater in parallel with gases, then sections 57 and 56 countercurrent to the gases, and finally becomes available at 61.

   Air supplied by a fan 62 passes through the air heater (if desired, part of the air passes through the adjustable bypass 63) and descends along the duct 64 to the level of the pulverized charcoal burners 1 where part of the air is used as secondary air for combustion in the furnace of the steam generator.

  Another part of the air is taken from a suitable point (not shown) and led to the crusher (not shown) which supplies the burners 1. Air is also supplied, through the duct 65, to the duct 66 adjacent to the. heater hearth, in a quantity regulated by registers 67. A branch 68 also goes from duct 65 to space 69 which forms part of the space surrounding the heater hearth between the refractory lining 52 and the outer casing 70 of insulating bricks.

  This external space is provided only above the level of the converging walls of a slag pit 71 formed at the bottom of the hearth. A register 99 serves to regulate the amount of air entering the space 69. Appropriate baffles (not shown) are arranged in the exterior space 69 and extend from the refractory bricks 52 to the casing.

 <Desc / Clms Page number 7>

 of insulating bricks 70, these baffles being spaced so as to force the incoming air to follow a large part of the outer face of the refractory bricks and thus to cool these bricks on the path from the branch 68 to the space 72. De this space 72 the air passes into the furnace as secondary air around the fuel and air streams delivered by each of the burners 55.

   The air which is not withdrawn at 68 continues its way in the duct 66 and part of this air can pass into the space 73 located on the side of the duct and from there it enters the hearth as a secondary air, around the fuel and primary air streams delivered by each of the burners. Registers such as 74 are used to regulate the arrival of this air to each of the burners.

   The remaining air passes from conduit 66, through conduit 75, to crusher 54 where it is used as the primary air to convey the pulverized coal, along pipes such as 76, to the burners.

     Subject to adjustment by registers 77 at the inlet of a duct 77a, cooled gases are taken up, by a fan 78, in the space 79 between the economizer 33 and the air heater 34 and delivered to a duct. 80 which is divided into three branches 81, 82 and 83. The branch 81 opens into the duct 66 in which, as already explained, circulates the air intended to serve as primary air and, also if necessary, of secondary air in the heater hearth.

   The quantity of gas entering the conduit 66 is regulated by a register 84 located in the branch 81.

   The branch 82 which receives a quantity of air regulated by the register 85, in turn divides into two branches 86 and 87 which run horizontally along the wall of the heater hearth opposite the burners, and delivers the gases above rows of tubes 88 and 89 which are controlled by

 <Desc / Clms Page number 8>

 needle valves and lead the gases into the hearth through horizontal rows of openings 90 and 91, respectively, formed in the refractory bricks. A similar row of tubes 92 controlled by needle valves is provided to conduct the gases from branch 86, through openings 93 of the insulating brick shell 70, into space 69.

   Register 85 cuts off the gas supply to branches 86 and 87 if, while the fireplace is in service, it becomes necessary to clear openings 90 and 91.

   The branch 83 in which the gas supply is controlled by a damper (not shown) extends horizontally across the width of the hearth and delivers the gases to the pipes 94 and 95 controlled by needle valves and carrying the valves. gas to the horizontal rows of openings 96 and 97 formed in the refractory bricks.

   The fact that the fan 78 sucks in the gases coming from the hearth of the steam generator and injects them into the heater is particularly advantageous during the start-up of the plant for the production and heating of steam. While the steam generator is brought up to operating temperature, the fan 78, the control of which must be independent of the steam supplied by the generator, serves to introduce burnt gases into the hearth of the heater, through the openings 90 , 91, 96 and 97, which makes it possible to gradually bring the heater to a temperature at least close to that required for starting.

   This temperature rise requires little supervision and the dryness of the steam path through the heater tube bundle is ensured without the expense of fuel in the heater hearth.

  The gases cooled by the fan 78

 <Desc / Clms Page number 9>

 are supplied to primary air and secondary air in order to maintain a low combustion temperature, and they are added to the hot burned gases of the heater hearth to prevent overheating of the heater. Gases are therefore added to the air intended to serve as primary air and, in addition to the regulation of the combustion temperature, their heat is useful to facilitate the work of the pulverizer when the coal introduced into it contains moisture.

  The proportion of gases in the primary air must be less than a limit determined by the tendency of the flame to separate from the burners in the event of an excessive proportion of gas. Above this limit, combustion becomes unstable and the flame may dull and go out.

   Gases are also added to the secondary air entering the heater hearth around the streams of fuel and primary air delivered by the burners.

  In the mixture of air and gas which can be admitted by opening register 74, the proportion of gas is the same as in its mixture with the primary air. However, it is permitted to mix with secondary air a much higher proportion of gas than in mixing with primary air, and this higher proportion is useful in mixing with secondary air, in order to establish a reduced combustion temperature. By adjusting the needle valves of the pipes 92, any desired proportion of gas can be admitted into the air entering the fireplace through space 72. The limit of the gas proportion is indicated, in this case, by the poor combustion of the fuel, which can be observed as soon as the limit is exceeded.

   Gases which can be called cooling gases are also injected through the openings 90, 91, 96 and 97 in the ceiling and in the wall opposite the heating end,

 <Desc / Clms Page number 10>

 in the combustion products in order to dilute them before they reach the heater, which has the effect not only of lowering the temperature of the combustion products to a harmless value, but also of ensuring effective protection of the combustion products. refractory bricks 52 from said wall and from a part of the sky further away from the burners.

   By adding, as described, gases cooled to the primary air and to the secondary air, a relatively low temperature is ensured in the furnace, leading to excellent combustion. This temperature is lower than that which would be obtained by mixing cooling gases with the primary air or with the secondary air alone. As a result, a simple firebox made of refractory bricks can be used and the expense and complications caused by water-cooled walls can be avoided.

   In addition, by injecting cooled gases also through the openings 90, 91, 96 and 97, the combustion products are brought to a suitable temperature before these products act on the heater. The heat exchange surfaces are thus protected against overheating and clogging by slag, that is to say against the deposition, on the tubes, of slag having a temperature above their melting point. . This is achieved without using, in the heater, cooling devices such as bundles of water tubes.

   Almost all of the heat released is sent to the bundles of heating tubes, which makes it possible to limit the dimensions of the hearth and the sprayer and to reduce the consumption of coal, compared to the quantity of heat transmitted per second to the steam.

   In addition, due to the rapid flow of gases over the heater tubes, due to the addition of recirculated gases to the fresh combustion products, the efficiency

 <Desc / Clms Page number 11>

 reheater tube bundles, that is to say their heat transfer rate is high. This also makes it possible to reduce the size of the heater. Another factor making it possible to reduce the dimensions of the heater is the reduction in the temperature drop of the gases going from the inlet to the outlet of the tube bundles., Thanks to the large quantity of the gases which results from the temperature of the tubes. combustion products at the inlet of the heater has been reduced to the desired value by the addition of cooled gas and not by other means such as for example a screen of tubes with water circulation.

   The quantity of cooled gas delivered by the fan 78 is normally regulated automatically by devices which depend on the temperature of the gas entering the heater, observed by a thermometer 98, in order to maintain this temperature below 'a certain security limit.

   In order to be able to regulate at any time, for example automatically as it has just been said, the quantity of gases to be used to dilute the combustion products of the heater hearth, the registers 77 can be used, especially when the fan 78 is running. at constant speed.

  But we could also use the fan speed control to adjust the amount of these gases. Whatever the method of adjusting the quantity of gas passing through the openings 90, 91, 96 and 97, it must be accompanied by an appropriate adjustment of the needle valves of the tubes 92 and an adjustment of the register 84, in order to maintain the desired proportion of gas in the primary air and in the secondary air.

   The feed to the burners 53 with pulverized coal is normally automatically adjusted so as to regulate

 <Desc / Clms Page number 12>

 suitably the temperature of the steam leaving the heater.

   Fig. 4 shows a variant of certain parts of the furnace of the heater according to FIG. 3. In the modified construction, the mixture of cooled air and gas used to cool the refractory bricks of the heater hearth passes from space 69 to the heating end of the hearth but, instead of serving as secondary air. , this mixture enters the hearth as tertiary air, through a row of openings 150 passing through the hearth at the heating end, between the burners and the sky. The proportion of gas cooled in the air thus injected into the furnace may be greater than in the primary air and is in practice regulated to be so, but in this case the proportion of the gases cooled in the secondary air is not should generally not exceed the proportion of gases in the primary air.

   For this reason, all the secondary air coming from space 73 is subject to adjustment by registers such as 74 cooperating with each of the burners.

   If the proper proportion of gas in the air admitted through the openings 150 is exceeded, this is indicated by the imperfect combustion of the fuel.

   The proportion of cold gases mixed with the primary air must not exceed a certain maximum as already explained with reference to the construction example described above, and this maximum is determined by observing the combustion conditions. , the proportion to be lowered when it is observed that the flame tends to separate from the burner.

   In another embodiment of the invention not shown here, it is envisioned to insulate the surfaces which transmit heat to heat the steam, from the chamber into which the burners open and to provide an open path also isolated from the chamber. this room, the pro-

 <Desc / Clms Page number 13>

 combustion ducts taking this path to reach the heat exchange surfaces. Cooled gases can be injected into this open path, for example at the same end as that through which the fresh combustion products enter, so as to moderate the temperature of the combustion products before they reach the temperature. heat exchange surfaces.

   An example of such a construction is shown in FIG. 4 of the date marl patent application, from the same Applicant, entitled "Improvements to steam generators comprising heaters and / or superheaters with independent heating".

   Certain characteristics described above, relating to the limitation of the temperature of the hot products of combustion going to the steam heater, by means of cooled gases which. have passed through a heat exchanger common to the hearth of a steam generator and to the hearth, heated independently, of the steam heater, are the subject of the aforementioned patent application.
