<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

APPARATUS TO MAKE TARMACADAM
The present invention relates to an apparatus for making tarmacadam.
We know that tarmacadam is a product intended for road surfaces, this product consisting of the intimate mixture, in given proportions, of stones, crushed to a determined size, with a binder consisting in general, of tar or bitumen or by a mixture of these two substances: For the tarmacadam to be of good quality, it is necessary that at the time of mixing,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the stones are free of their dust and that they are at a sufficiently high temperature so that the binder used for their coating does not coagulate.
For the manufacture of tarmacadam, several devices are used at present which serve, respectively, for the preparation of stones, for that of the binder, and for the mixing by stirring of the stones and the binder. This results in extensive handling which not only increases the cost of labor, but also results in an inferior product.
The object of the invention is the production of an apparatus which makes it possible to carry out all the treatments which the stones and the binder used for the manufacture of tarmacadam must undergo, the latter leaving the apparatus completely manufactured. Said apparatus makes it possible, in particular, to carry out the heating, and the dedusting of the stones, the heating of the binder, the automatic dumping on the stones of the binder, in the desired quantity, the intimate mixture of the stones and the binder
The apparatus according to the invention is essentially characterized in that it consists of a fixed part comprising the binder trays, and an oven, and a movable part rotating inside said oven, this movable part being arranged so as to receive, separately, the stones and the binder,
then in causing the intimate mixing by bragging, of said stones and of said binder, and the evacuation of the tarmacadam resulting from the aforementioned mixture.
Other advantages and characteristics of the invention will emerge from the description which follows with reference to the appended drawing which represents, schematically and simply
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
by way of example, one embodiment of an apparatus for making tarmacadam.
In this drawing: Fig. I is a longitudinal sectional view of the apparatus, FIG. 2 is a side view, partly in section, corresponding to that of FIG. I, Fig '. 3 is a plan view of the fixed part of the device
According to the exemplary embodiment shown, the apparatus essentially comprises: a fixed part and a rotating part '.
The fixed part is made up of two rectangular tanks I, intended to contain the binder (bitumen tar or other), suitably spaced and forming the frame of the apparatus :. The inner walls of the trays .1 constitute, at the same time, the walls of an oven whose hearth is indicated at 9.
The oven is complete. By an outer casing 3! completely surrounding the rotating part of the appliance *. The gas from the oven was evacuated through a chimney 4.
Each tank supports, by means of bearings 4 ', a shaft 5 provided with two rolling rollers 6 and, at one of its ends, with a toothed pinion 7.
The two pinions 7 'and, therefore, the shafts 5 are driven in rotation by means of a transverse control shaft 8 provided with two toothed pinions 9, meshing with the pinions 7, and by a pulley d. 'drive 10. The drive of the shaft 8 is obtained by any suitable motor,
Inside the chamber II of the furnace is mounted a tube bundle 12 supplied with cold air by its end 13, by means of a fan which can rest on a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
platform 14, integral with the two tanks I.
At its outlet end, the tube bundle is in communication with a duct 15, opening out inside a chute 16. used for supplying stones to the rotating part of the device :. The hot air which passes through the rotating part, as will be seen later, is evacuated by a dust tube 17 in communication with the chimney 4. The fixed part of the apparatus is completed by a pipe 18 of arrival of the binder, this pipe itself being in communication with a feed pump which can be mounted on the platform 14 supporting the fan and sucks the binder from the bins r.
The rotating part of the apparatus consists of three horizontal and coaxial cylindrical bodies, 19, 20 and 21, made integral with each other by suitably placed spacers. These cylinders are internally provided with propellers 22, 23 and 24, forming an Archimedean screw, the pitch of the propeller 23 corresponding to the intermediate cylinder 20 being reversed with respect to the pitch of the corresponding propellers 22 and 24. respectively, to the outer 19 and lower 21 cylinders.
The inner cylinder 21 has, at its rear end, a bottom pierced with an opening 9-II into which the feed chute 16. The front end 25 of the cylinder 21 is open.
The intermediate cylinder 20 is open at its rear end and closed at its front end by a cover in the form of a truncated cone 26, communicating with the dust collection tube 17.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The outer cylinder 19 is closed at its rear end and is provided, at its front end, with an extension in the form of a truncated cone 27, the inner wall of which is provided with a helix 28, forming an Archimedean screw. and constituting, in a way, an extension of the propeller 22 provided in said outer cylinder 19. At its front end, the frustoconical part 27 is open and extended by a flared element 29 forming a weir for the discharge of the finished product *.
The three cylinders 19, 20 and 21 and the truncated cone 27 form a rigid assembly, which rests on the track rollers 6, by means of two tracks 30 and SI *.
The gaulotte 16 is fed by any means. suitable: elevator, loader, shovel, etc. '.
The operation of the device described is as follows:
The trays I being filled with binder and the interior of the oven being at an appropriate temperature, the rotating part of the apparatus is rotated and the stones crushed in the format are introduced therein, by means of the chute 16. desired: On leaving the chute 16, the stones fall into the inner cylinder 21 and due to the rotation of the latter, are driven in the direction of arrow F, by the propeller 24 '. During their journey, in the cylinder ±, the stones are crossed by the current of hot air arriving by the pipe. This air heats up the stones, carries the dust with it and exits into the open air through duct @ 17 and chimney 4.
When the stones have traveled the entire length of cylinder 21, they fall into intermediate cylinder 20
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
and under the action of the propeller 23 they move in the direction of the arrow F1, until they fall into the outer cylinder 19. When the stones are in this last cylinder, they are entrained by the 'propeller 22 in the direction of arrow F2.
During their journey in the cylinders 21, 20 and 19, the stones are freed of their dust and brought to the desired temperature for their intimate mixture with the binder '.
This is added to the stones as soon as they leave the cylinder 19, at the place where the pipe 18 opens, that is to say, at the intersection of the cylinder 19 and the frustoconical body 27. The flow rate of the pipe. 18 is calculated so that the quantity of binder added to the stones corresponds exactly to the volume of the stones contained between two consecutive turns of the heli this 22.
At the exit of the cylinder 19, the stones and the binder are taken by the propeller 28 and conveyed along the truncated body 27 to the weir 29. through which the tarmacadam exits ;.
During their journey in part 27, the stones and the binder are intimately mixed by stirring, the coating of the stones being complete due to their rotation on themselves.
Conveying materials in a continuous and fractional fashion in relatively small quantities allows rapid and efficient drying, dusting and heating.
For the same reason, the dosage of stones and binder as well as their mixing is made easier:
It goes without saying that the apparatus has only been described for explanatory purposes, in no way limiting, and that various modifications of detail could be made to the shape of the device.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
embodiment indicated, without going beyond the scope of the invention. Thus the rotating part of the apparatus could comprise a different number of cylindrical bodies, the dimensions of these caps as well as those of the propellers being a function of the flow rate of the apparatus and, consequently, variables. The frustoconical body 27 could be replaced by a cylindrical body, or cylindrical part and frustoconical part.
Likewise, the fan blowing air into the tube bundle could be replaced by a vacuum cleaner mounted on the dust collection tube, said tube bundle could also be replaced by one or more heating boxes, or eliminated. , the propeller 23 of the intermediate cylinder could be omitted, the conveying of the stones inside the cylinder 19 being obtained by inclining backwards, with respect to the horizontal, the whole of the rotating part. Finally, the whole apparatus could be mounted on wheels, in order to be able to be easily moved.
