<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

D'autre part, chaque bras 27
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Convertible armchair, The present invention relates to an armchair which, by a very simple operation, requiring neither tools nor dismantling, can be transformed into a very comfortable bed.
Essentially, the chair, which has a seat portion, a backrest and two cuffs or arms, consists of a fixed main frame, on which the backrest is hinged so as to. allow horizontal folding on this frame; on the other hand, the seat itself, integral with one of the arms of the chair, is mounted to slide horizontally on this frame, while being supported by two of the legs of the chair.
For the transformation into a bed, the seat is slid transversely, that is to say that this seat, with the arm connected to it, and the two feet which support it, slides on the fixed frame, moving away from the arm attached to the frame ; the location occupied by the seat thus becomes free, which makes it possible to fold the backrest onto the frame, at the location previously occupied by the seat. Backrest and seat are then in the continuation of one another.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The two arms are on the other hand mounted on the parts which support them so that they can be folded outwards in various positions until they are placed in the horizontal plane, thus forming, with the seat and the backrest, a surface considerable, about two meters in length.
The invention also relates to the construction and assembly details which will emerge from the description below, made with reference to the accompanying drawing by way of example, and in which: fig.l is a perspective view of the chair, fig.2 is the vertical section along II-II of fig.l, fig.3 is a perspective of the armchair transformed into a bed, the cushions being removed, fig.4 is a vertical section showing the mechanism for folding the sides or arms of the chair.
In fig.l, the right armchair cuff is removed, to show the slots 1 for introducing the folding mechanism. The chair has a fixed frame of which the right side 2 is only visible in fig.l; to this frame is articulated., by hinges 3, the backrest 4 provided with a removable cushion 5.
The fixed frame is combined with a movable frame comprising the seat part 6, with removable cushion 7, the left side and legs 8 with rollers 9, and the left cuff 10 with removable cushion 11.
Referring to fig. 2 and 3, it can be seen that the fixed frame consists of a horizontal body 12, carried on the right by the two feet 8 'and on the left by the left feet 14. These feet 14 are normally hidden by the feet 8. The body 12 is open at the top and is used to receive blankets and bed sheets. normally, this body is closed by the seat part, which has a rigid bottom 13 carrying the cushion 7.
This bottom is secured to a U-shaped frame, the two branches of which

fittings 16-16 fixed to the sides 15-15 'and engaged in lesrainureslongitudinale 17 desbranches 6-6'. Preferably, the translational movement of the mobile frame is still guided by the slider 18, integral with this frame, and which moves in the slide 19 on the side 21 of the body 12. Stops 20 fixed to the lower face of the bottom 13 limit the exit of the mobile frame. In its extended position, the movable frame uncovers the body 12, as shown in Fig.3, and allows the folding on this body, the backrest 4 whose cushion 5 has been removed.
The backrest 4 (fig.2 and 3) is not articulated to the external side 15 'of the body 12, but to a cross member 22 mounted in the body; the said backrest extends moreover towards the bottom, in the body 12 so that the cross member 22 constitutes, by its lower edge, a stop for the backrest (fig.2) when the latter is erected. Over the entire width of the backrest, the side 15 'of the fixed frame is cut along 23, which allows, the seat 13 being in the position of fig.3, to fold the backrest exactly on the body 12. Under these conditions, the seat 13 and the folded back 4 form a continuous horizontal surface, capable of receiving the chair cushions.
The seat portion 13 is provided over its entire length with a slot 24 in which the backrest 4 is engaged when the armchair furniture. as shown in the figures, each side of the armchair is made of a frame intended to receive a side cuff and a cushion; this carcass is covered above with a sheet of wood 25 on which the sleeve rests. the cuff consists of a vertical side 26 bringing together two uprights or lateral arms 27 so as to form a vertical receptacle for the cushion 11. The board 25 is provided at both ends with a slot 1 which corresponds to the upper opening 30 a metal boot 28 housed in the frame on the side of the chair and fixed by screws 29.
On the other hand, each arm 27
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
carries, near its lower edge, the pivot 31 of an angled metal arm 32, the large branch of which is engaged in the slot 1 and extends through the corresponding boot 28. Said branch is provided with various notches 33 and 34 and is subjected, in the boot 28, to the action of a spring 35 housed in this box. In the normal vertical position of the cuffs or armrests, the long branch of the bracket 32 is fully engaged in the box 28, and its upper notch 33 attacks the edge of the opening 30, the spring 35 acting to maintain the engagement .
The other notches 34, arranged at suitably chosen spacings, can also come into engagement with the same edge of the opening 30, as shown by the dotted positions of FIG. to do this, we push slightly 1 a sleeve you towards 1 on the right (fig.4) so as to compress the spring 35 and to release the notch 33; the cuff you is then pulled upwards until the first notch 34 engages the edge of the slot 30; in this position, the cuff is slightly inclined, its lower edge resting on the board 25; for the second notch 34, the inclination is even more pronounced and, for the last notch, the cuff is folded down in the horizontal plane.
In all its positions apart from the vertical, the cuff is supported by the board 25 and by the pivot. 31 and I square 32. By choosing the position of the two armchair cuffs (for example one horizontal and the other inclined) it is therefore possible, the mobile frame being moved and the backrest 4 folded horizontally, transforming the armchair into a bed of rest of normal length and width.
To ensure an exact guiding of the movable chassis on the fixed chassis, it is obviously possible to provide additional slides or slides, such as for example 36; this slide 36 extending over t or the length of the side 15 ', relieves the fittings 16.
