<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

"Improvements in spraying by grinding".
The present invention relates, in general, to one of the integrator by friction and more particularly to an apparatus for producing, in a continuous manner by friction and starting from pieces of metallic lead, lead powder and lead oxides.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The apparatus which is the subject of the present invention operates reliably and has good efficiency: it automatically provides a product of the desired fineness, without mixing with coarse-grained materials.
It comprises a simple and efficient device designed and constructed so as to retain in the apparatus all the coarse-grained materials until they have been reduced entirely to a powder of the desired fineness.
It comprises a device of certain and efficient operation, the object of which is to immediately return to the disintegration zone the coarse-grained particles forming the residue from the sieving devices.
The apparatus which is the object of the present invention is of simple construction, inexpensive and robust and is not subject to disturbance.
Further features of the present invention consist in the construction and combination of the parts described below and particularly specified in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing which shows an embodiment of the present invention: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a lead oxide disintegrator; Figure 2 is an overhead plan view of said disintegrator; Figure 3 is an end view of the apparatus taken from the material inlet side;
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
FIG. 4 is a longitudinal section on a larger scale taken along the axis of the apparatus and approximately along line 4-4 of FIG. 2; Figure 5 is an enlarged cross section taken on line 5-5 of Figure 4; FIG. 6 is a partial view on a larger scale of the guide rings.
Like reference numbers designate like parts in different figures.
Although the apparatus which is the subject of the present invention can be used for the preparation, in the state of fine divisions of materials of different kinds, it has been developed in principle to produce by friction lead powder and oxides. of lead from pieces of metallic lead. For this purpose, it generally consists of a fixed enclosure or envelope connected by conduits to a dust separator device.
Inside this enclosure is a rotating hollow element, preferably cylindrical in shape, which supports the working parts of the device; said parts essentially comprise a device serving to introduce, in a continuous manner, into said cylinder, while it is rotating, the pieces of the material to be disintegrated by friction, a sieving device combined with said cylinder serving to exit from the crushing zone the amine particles of the disintegrated material, and a conveyor device for bringing back into the zone of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
disintegrating particles too large to pass through said sieving devices.
Said apparatus may also include a device intended to supply into the cylinder an oxidizing agent making it possible to carry out the oxidation of the material at the same time as its spraying.
Referring now to the drawing, it can be seen that the reference number 10 represents a suitable frame on which is mounted a fixed casing 11 comprising a central portion 12 and two end portions 13. From the upper part of each of the end portions 13 a pipe 14 which ends at the dust separator device 15 joined by a pipe 16 to a suction pump 17 controlled by a motor 18.
Within the fixed casing 11 can rotate a horizontal cylinder or drum 19 having bottom plates 20-20a, suitably fixed on journals 21-21 &. ; these journals are supported by bearings 22-22a mounted on the frame 10. The journal 21 is hollow and communicates at its outer end with a feed hopper 23. The inner end of said journal is located opposite a pipe 34 disposed along the longitudinal axis of element 19; at the center of said pipe is a worm conveyor 25 with a central orifice 25a through which material flows into the drum.
Each of the end portions of the drum 19 has the form of a series of rings 27 separated from one another by spacers or collars.

moths of the drum. The endless device of Figure 6 prevents the abstraction of the slots 30.
The thickness of each ring at its internal periphery is appreciably greater than at a point located at a small distance towards the outside from its internal periphery, so as to form, between the rings, cavities 32 whose width is larger than that of the slots 30.
The chambers 31 are formed by cylindrical screens 33, each of them being mounted at each end of the drum 19 at a certain distance from said drum. The meshes of the screens 33 are smaller than the slots 30 and determine the degree of fineness of the finished product.

the remaining deterioration of the weight of the material qiSsestPSset), each sieve comprises a perforated cylinder 35 fixed by one of its dimensions on the drum 19 and by the other on one of the bottom plates of the cylinder by the screws 36 which also serve to keep the screens 33 in place.
Material coarse-grained to pass through the screens is returned to the

drum by two special conveyors: ciaux 37 mounted on partitions 38 and which are each placed alongside one of the bottom plates of the drum. Thus / RT) T 'which can be seen in FIG. 4, together with FIG. 5, each conveyor 37 and each partition 38 are combined with one of the bottom plates of the drum so as to constitute a channel or passage in the form of a spiral which connects at one of its ends with said chamber 31 and at the other with the supply pipe 24.
The operation of the apparatus which is the object of the present invention is as follows: the pieces of metallic lead are loaded into the hopper 23 from where they pass through the journal 21 to arrive in the screwless conveyor. end 25; said conveyor passes them through the opening 25a in the central zone or disintegration zone of the drum 19, By rotating, said drum drives the pieces of lead which rise up along its internal wall to a small distance from its lower generatrix and, from there, fall in cascade in the bottom of the drum. The friction of the pieces of lead gives rise to an elevation. temperature in the drum.
A current of air drawn through the drum by the fan 17 oxidizes the surfaces of said pieces of lead to the state of lead suboxide or litharge or both depending on the temperature in the disintegrator and the amount of air which get there. The oxide thus formed is detached by friction and leaves the drum, passing through the slots 30.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
drum starting from the central position and moving towards the end portions. The material which leaves the drum falls on the screens 33 which are allowed to pass through the particles of suitable fineness which arrive in the hoppers 34.
The
EMI7.1
Larger grained particles are picked up by the spiral conveyors / which are Archimedean screw shaped and returned to conveyor 25 which passes them back through opening 25a into the drum disintegration zone. The air which passes through the drum escapes through the pipes 14 which, for reasons of hygiene, pass it through the dust collector 15 which retains the lead particles which could have been entrained. From there it escapes into the atmosphere.
In the manufacture of partially oxidized lead powder, the degree of oxidation% relative to the lead protoxide can be varied, on demand, by varying the temperature in the disintegrator, its speed of rotation, the quantity of lead introduced. in the disintegrator and the amount of air supplied to the disintegrator. For example, it has been found that a satisfactory oxide can be obtained in accumulator batteries by using a disintegrator having a diameter of 65 cm containing a charge of pieces of lead weighing 400 kgs, by rotating the drum. at a speed of about 57 revolutions per minute and by making air arrive there with a flow rate of 250 cubic meters per minute.
The product thus obtained is a mixture of protoxide and suboxide of lead with a few particles of metallic lead in the state of fine division.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The fineness of the product leaving the disintegrator is determined in the first place by the width of the slits 31 which can be easily adjusted by using spacers 28 of different thicknesses * The material which, on leaving said slits, does not have the appropriate degree of fineness is sorted by the sieves 33. The use of slots 31 of a width determined in advance largely prevents the clogging which would occur on the sieves 33, if said slots did not exist. not..
. The advantages of the present invention can now be seen. Said invention constitutes an efficient and automatic device enabling the desired product to be removed from the apparatus without mixing with coarse-grained particles. The coarse-grained material is retained entirely in the apparatus, which avoids having to carry out a subsequent sieving and to transport the coarse-grained material for reintroducing it into the apparatus. Another advantage of the present invention consists in the simplicity and the low cost of the auxiliary installations required in combination with the main device.
Yet another advantage of the present invention results from the fact that it comprises a device by which the coarse-grained particles forming the residue from the sieving device are immediately returned to the disintegration layer. The new device used to immediately return the coarse-grained material to the disintegration zone completely avoids the accumulation of said material at points where it would reduce the

All material is forced to flow from the central portion to the end portions of the drum, ensuring product uniformity for a given set of operating conditions.
