<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Indirectly heated cathode for electric discharge tubes.
The present invention relates to indirectly heated cathodes for electric discharge tubes and more particularly to those constituted, for example, by a tubular cathode body inside which the heating element is disposed, preferably with interpolation of. a layer of insulating material.
Various methods of fixing these cathodes in electric discharge tubes have already been proposed. most
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
commonly used consists in introducing through one end of the cathode tube, which is usually open at both ends, a member which is fixed to the outer wall of this tube and by means of which the cathode is carried in a support. Harbor. In this way the cathode can be supported directly by the clamping of the bulb with the aid of this fixing member. However, it is also possible to fix this organ to the cathode on the side opposite the clamping and to mount it using this organ, in a special support arranged in the tube.
This construction has the drawback that it is very difficult to ensure good fixing of the cathode with respect to the other electrodes, that is to say good centering of the cathode, and that it occurs in besides great heat losses by radiation from the two open ends of the cathode and by conduction along the support which is often relatively heavy.
It has already been proposed to clamp the cathode body by one of its ends and to fix the cathode in a support by means of a member placed next to this body.
However, this construction also suffers from the drawback of making good centering of the cathode extremely difficult and, moreover, quite considerable heat loss by conduction occurs. In addition, in this case, the distance between the emitting surface of the cathode and the grid is no longer uniform along the entire surface of the cathode, which can cause deviations from the characteristic curves of the tube, for example, a slope at the bottom of the curve. The same drawback also arises with the known constructions in which the ends of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
cathode are folded towards each other at the top so as to surround a support disposed inside the cathode.
The object of the present invention is to avoid these drawbacks or at least to reduce them considerably.
The indirectly heated cathode in accordance with the invention consists of a heating element surrounded by the cathode body proper. The cathode is supported by one of its ends by means of a member located substantially in the axis of the cathode body to which it is attached. Preferably, a layer of insulating material is disposed between the heating element and the cathode body. It is very advantageous to close the cathode at one of its ends with the aid of a part fixed inside the cathode body in such a way that this part closes the cathode on the outside and that the surface of this part is perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the cathode. To this surface is fixed a member which is located substantially in the axis of the cathode and by means of which the cathode is mounted in a support.
In this construction, the closing and fixing members can be in one piece.
The construction described above makes it possible to avoid the drawbacks mentioned at the beginning. By providing a fixing member located substantially in the axis of the cathode, it is possible to center the cathode very easily, that is to say that it can be placed at a suitable point and at a suitable spacing with respect to the other electrodes. . By closing the cathode by at least one of its ends, a suitable reduction in the heat dissipation by radiation is achieved, and thanks to the use of a relatively thin fixing member, which is possible by placing this member in the axis of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
cathode, heat loss by conduction is reduced.
In addition, these losses can be reduced by fabricating these members from a material which is a poor conductor of heat, for example from an alloy of nickel and iron.
However, there are also cases where it is recommended to manufacture these members entirely or partially from a material with relatively low radiating power, for example copper.
By using the construction according to the invention one finally obtains that there are no deviations in the characteristic curves, thanks to the closing of the cathode body with the aid of a member whose outer surface is perpendicular to the direction. longitudinal of the cathode and in the middle of which the cathode fixing member is arranged. This construction allows the use of a cathode which is spaced uniformly along its entire length from the first grid and which, therefore, can also be used along its entire length.
The Applicant has observed that the invention applies more particularly to cathodes of which the cathode body is made entirely or in part of a material whose radiating power is lower than that of nickel, for example of copper or of silver. . If these materials are used for the cathode, a relatively small amount of heat is sufficient to bring the cathode to the emission temperature and the heat lost at the ends, by conduction and radiation, plays such a role that it is particularly advantageous. for these cathodes, to use the construction according to the invention.
The invention will be better understood by referring to the appended drawing given by way of example.

Fig.l shows a discharge tube comprising a cathode according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the electrode system and FIGS. 3 and 4 show embodiments of the cathode attachment in more detail.
In fig.l, 1 is the wall of the tube at the bottom of which is sealed the clamp 2, in which are fixed the supply and support son of the various electrodes.
The electrodes are kept at a certain distance from each other by the two mica plates 3. The system of electrodes comprises the anode 4, which in this case is made of metallic gauze and inside which is arranged the grid 6 wound on the rods 5. Inside this grid is arranged the cathode 7 constructed in accordance with the invention. This cathode is formed by a heating body surrounded, in this embodiment with the interposition of insulating material, by a cathode body.
In the embodiment shown in the drawing, this body is made of copper. It is coated on the outside with an electron-emitting material.
As shown in more detail in figs 3 and 4, a body 8 is arranged at the top of the. cathode and is fixed inside the cathode body. On this body is mounted the fixing member 9 which is supported by the mica plate 3 and which serves for centering the cathode. This member can serve at the same time for supplying current to the cathode body and then passes through the clamping of the tube towards the outside through the conductor 10 arranged outside the system of electrodes.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited

to the embodiments shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, but that various other embodiments can be imagined without going beyond its scope.
