<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"PROCESS FOR THE THERMAL TREATMENT OF RAILS."
The present patent relates to a process for the heat treatment of rails and the means specific to its realization.
It is known that in practice rolling, delivers rail steels in two well known main constituents; ferrite and perlite; but the latter do not give the metal a sufficient hardness for the needs of modern intensive traffic on earthed tracks, and it follows a rapid wear of the part of the rail in contact with the wheels of the vehicles, that is to say of the bead.
The object of the present invention is to modify the texture of the rail steel when the bar is rolled, and by this modification to give a greater hardness to the working part; however, this hardness should not be too high so as not to cause rail breakage, due to the fragility of the metal.
The process for transforming the texture of the bead of the present patent consists in watering uniformly and abundantly, in one or more waterings, and this, from a temperature
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
well determined, the desired part of the bead by constantly renewed pressurized water. This water may itself have a well determined temperature.
It will follow a kind of quenching of the treated part, quenching mitigated by one or more incomes, due to the heat contained in the soul and the shoe of the rail which, them, are not subjected to the watering; heat which spreads over the whole section, after the treatment has ceased.- In this way, the so-called sorbitic texture is obtained at the desired location of the bead, which is characterized by high resistance to wear. , without however being fragile, and the rail after this treatment retains its properties of great elasticity by the fact that the core, the pad and the lower part of the bead which has not been affected by the treatment have retained Their normal texture, the present invention claims for its process the following advantages over other employed methods.
The treatment water comes from a tank whose contents are at a well-determined temperature. The sprinkling process means that water of known and constant temperature comes into contact with the rail, from one end of the operation to the other; it is therefore possible to scientifically control the process.
If we had adopted a system consisting of dipping the bead of the rail in a tank, where the water would be constantly renewed, we would have found ourselves in poor conditions of process control, in that, whatever the speeds arrival and departure of the water used for quenching, the temperature of the water in the refrigeration tank varies by the large number of calories supplied by the rail to be treated; the temperature of the water in the tank rises, which makes it difficult to control the modification of the texture.
If, on the other hand, the spray quenching system had been adopted, surface textures quenched in a non-uniform manner would have been obtained, by the fact that the quenching means being a mixture of air and water, it there is heterogeneity of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the soaking material; strong quenching where the water drops will act and gentle quenching, or even zero, where the air particles will come into contact with the metal.
The installation is presented schematically according to the accompanying drawing.
The rail to be treated, brought above the sprinkler by any system, in this case the rollers 2, is shown at 1.
5 are the water chambers of the device. They are supplied with pressurized water through the general conduits 3, and the secondary conduits 4 arranged in large numbers over the entire length of the apparatus.
The chambers .5 are interconnected by cross members 8, and the whole is placed on a frame 10. The chambers 5 leave between them an empty space to allow the flow of water which has been in contact with the rail, in the evacuation channel 9.
A system of plates II comes to seal against the bead of the rail and limits the part of the bead to be treated, making well protected from splash the parts of the rail which does not. must not be modified in their structure. The treatment water is sprayed from inside the chambers 5 onto the bead by traps arranged so that the bead is subjected to uniform watering: for this, the direction 6-7 of the pressurized water jets, thus the conicity of the water spray holes has been carefully studied.
A general valve opens or forms the inlet, regulates the magnitude of the flow; and the force of the water jet is regulated by a pressure regulating valve. It is by this that we will subject the rail, either a single or several quenching treatments followed by income,
The treatment process is as follows: with the sealing plates II removed, the newly rolled rail is brought into place. Then, we fix the plates II which are in one
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
material which is a poor conductor of heat, so that at this moment there is no quenching at the lines of contact between the ra, he and them.
When the cooling rail has reached the desired temperature to undergo the treatment, the pressure is regulated (3. water by the special valve and the open water inlet under pressure is opened, and the water spurts out on the bead of the rail, in a uniform way, and constantly renewed.
Depending on the profile and the degree of hardness to be obtained, it is possible to make several squirts of water spaced apart by incomes, by simply operating the main valve. When the sprinkling treatment is finished, the plates II are removed and the rail can then be conveyed to the coolers and the rest of the subsequent finishing operations.
It goes without saying that the object of the invention, considering the heat treatment of rails, can be applied to the treatment of any other metallurgical product for similar purposes.
The invention also relates not only to the process and the installation specific to its production, but also to the new product obtained as such, that is to say a rail or other metallurgical product treated as described herein.
