<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

EMI1.2
NANT DES DLdlW.0, S GELLULOSIQUES ".
This invention relates to the dyeing, printing or sanding of threads, yarns, knitted or woven fabrics or other products made from, or containing cellulose acetate or other cellulose esters of a. organic acid, such as for example cellulose formate, propionate or butyrate, or the product resulting from the treatment of alkalized cellulose with toluene p-sulphochloride (for example the product called
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
"immune cotton"), or products consisting of, or containing, cellulose ethers such as methylcellulose, ethylcellulose or benzylcellulose, or the corresponding condensation products of cellulose and glycols or other polyhydric alcohols,
all these cellulose derivatives being included below under the name of “organic substitution derivatives of cellulose”.
According to the present invention, materials consisting of or containing one or more of the organically substituted derivatives of cellulose are dyed or otherwise colored by materials or coloring compounds (other than azo materials or compounds) containing. a hydroxy-ether or aliphatic hydroxy-thioeter group, that is to say by compounds in which an aryl dye nucleus (other than an azo dye nucleus) is coupled by oxygen or sulfur with an aliphatic side chain containing one, two, three or more than three hydroxy groups.
It is easy to prepare such coloring materials or compounds, for example by treating a phenolic or thiophenolic body or salts thereof with a halohydrin, such as for example ethylene-chlorohydrin, propylene-ahlorhydrins, glyceryl-chlorohydrins. , glyceryl-dichlorbyrins, epichlorohydrin, ahlorbutylene glycol, erythrol-dichlorhydrin, mannitol-mono-or dichlorohydrin, etc ..., or an alkylene oxide such as ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, or a ketone such as acetone.
They can further be prepared by melting hydroxy aliphatic mercaptans or glycols with a nitro derived from an aryl dye nucleus, or a member of such a nucleus, in the presence of alkali-caustic, or by treating. both a halogen derivative of an aryl dye nucleus, or a member of such a nucleus, with an aliphatic hydroxy mercaptan.

Some examples of colorants applicable according to the present invention and of methods for preparing them will be given below, it being understood, however, that the invention is not limited to them in any way.
A. Anthraquinone dyes.
Example 1. Anthraquinone-Ó-mercaptant is condensed with

chlorbydrine the dye is obtained. o -5. Cta GHO H Cltvt C "o o which also gives yellow undertones, is slightly soluble in water and disperses very easily
Example 2. 1-Amino-4-oxyanthraquinone is dinitrogenated in a concentrated solution of sulfuric acid, the diazo-oxyanthraquinone sulfate is dissolved in water and heated with a solution of potassium thiocyanate. The oxyanthraquinone thiocyanate is heated to reflux with caustic soda in the presence of denatured alcohol to obtain the corresponding mercaptan which is then precipitated with hydrochloric acid and which is condensed with glyceryl-Ó-chlorohydrin. .
The product is reduced to the leuco state with caustic soda and hydrosulphite and the dried leuco body is heated under reflux on a water bath with methylamine. The dye thus obtained has the formula @

and gives reddish orange tints. Improved production is obtained by starting from 1-nitro-4-chloranthraquinone, treating with sulfide to obtain 1-amino-4-mercapto-anthraquinone and condensing with Ó -monochlorohydrin. The free amino compound itself gives yellow undertones. Methylation produces the compound whose formula is given above.
Example 3. Acetylamino-4-oxyanthraquinone is condensed with ethylene-chlorohydrin to obtain co-.

which dyes cellulose acetate golden yellow.
B. Condensed anthraquinone dyes.
Example 4. Chloranthrapyridone is condensed with

monothioglycerol (cm20H. CHOH.cn2SR) to obtain the dye C'o (.tH.cHs dye cwoq.ôxo% ¯g) "A5t cco e n 0 which dyes cellulose acetate in yellow shades.
As regards the dyes or compounds intended to be applied according to the present invention, it should be noted that the solubility in water of the dyes or compounds will be all the greater than the number of hydroxy groups of the chain (s). lateral will be. larger and, for obvious reasons, the use of such water-soluble compounds is preferable.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The dyes can be applied to the goods either in solution (when sufficiently soluble) or in aqueous suspension, or they can be made into a colloidal solution by any of the methods known in the art. industry such as the grinding process (for example in colloid mills), the process of dissolving in a solvent and pouring into water, possibly containing protective colloids, the process of subjecting pre-treatment with solubilizing agents or other methods.
As solubilizing agents suitable for obtaining such dispersions, there may be mentioned those described in Belgian patents N 311612 of July 16, 1923, improvement patent N 311613

of July 16, 1923, the operating patent N, 328736 of September 4, 1925, the patent application N 25987 of March 17, 1927, and the improvement patent application N 25988 of March 17, 1927, namely bodies with oily characteristics or fatty acids, in particular higher fatty acids or derivatives, sulfonated or otherwise, of these acids containing groups capable of forming salts, such as sulforicinoleic acid or other sulfonated fatty acids or salts of such acids or substances, for example example their alkali metal or ammonium salts,
used alone or in conjunction with auxiliary solvents as described in Belgian patents N 328.117 of August 10, 1925 and N 338.391 of December 28, 1926, carbocyclic compounds containing in their structure one or more groups forming salts or salts of such compounds ; sulfoaromatic fatty acids or their salts; and soluble resin soaps or sodium salts or other soluble salts or resin acid soaps.

Although, in the foregoing description, the dyes belonging to particular series have been indicated and alphatic side chains containing only the hydroxy group have been described, it is understood that the invention extends to the application. dyes of any series other than azo dyes and containing alphatic side chains which, in addition to one, two, three or more hydroxy groups, may contain any other desired substitution elements.
The invention further comprises the dyeing or other coloring of mixed products containing, for example, in addition to one or more of the organically substituted derivatives of cellulose, silk, wool or cellulose fibers, natural. or artificial, such as cotton or cellulosic type of artificial silk, in uniform or contrasting shades, depending on the affinity of the non-ester part and the non-ether part of the goods. The goods can be dyed with other dyes which act on the non-ester part and the non-ether part of said goods, either before, or after, or together with the dyes according to the invention.
