Beschrijving:

Description:
Title: Brake writing and brake drums for vehicles and machines from a light metal alloy with a good thermal conductivity, provided with a ceramic layer with a high friction coefficient, high wear resistance. Applied through a Plasma Electrical Oxidation process
Technical field of the invention:
Brake writing and brake drums for machines, bicycles, motorcycles, cars, trucks, tractors, trailers, derivatives thereof and other means of transport.
State of the art:
In the production of brake discs and brake drums, material combinations are pursued that link maximum coefficient of friction to maximum heat dissipation and maximum wear resistance at minimum cost and with minimum weight.
Unsprung weight should be kept as low as possible, the higher the unsprung weight, the worse the road holding. Total weight should be as low as possible i.v.m. energy consumption.
Brake drums currently exist in aluminum alloys with an inner ring in an iron alloy. In the current state of the art it is not possible to manufacture the brake drums entirely in an aluminum alloy, except in the MMC method.
Carbon has a good friction coefficient and high wear resistance, has a low heat conductivity, is light but is expensive.
In the recent past, attempts have been made to reduce the weight of the brakes by means of a lightweight MMC material (Metal-MatrixComposite).
Iron has a good coefficient of friction and reasonable wear resistance, has a medium heat conductivity, is heavy and is cheap.
MMC (Metal Matrix Composite) has a high coefficient of friction and a high wear resistance, has a high heat conductivity, is light and is expensive and difficult to produce in a consistent quality.
Description of the invention:
The brake disc and brake drum is made of an alloy of light metals, which essentially consists of either aluminum or magnesium or a combination of aluminum and magnesium and is then provided with a thin layer of ceramic material. By means of a Plasma Electrical Oxidation process.
Benefits:
The ceramic layer increases the abrasion resistance dramatically. The use of aluminum and / or magnesium alloys would not be possible without the ceramic layer
An alloy of light metals consisting essentially of either aluminum or magnesium, or a combination of aluminum and magnesium and ceramic coated by a PEO process has a high coefficient of friction and high wear resistance, has a high heat conductivity, is light and can be produced cheaply and in a consistent quality.
In view of the high heat conductivity of the light metals, the frictional heat will be removed more quickly.
As a result of the better heat dissipation, the temperature of the brake disc or brake drum will be lower than with an iron brake disc or brake drum made of an iron alloy, so that the chance of fading (loss of braking power) is much lower.
The friction coefficient and therefore the efficiency of the braking will be increased considerably
The high coefficient of friction is expressed in a good and fast grip. A higher coefficient of friction leads to a higher grip and therefore to faster and more efficient braking, to smaller dimensions of the brakes and thus to lighter braking systems.
The achieved weight saving is therefore two-fold. On the one hand there is a weight saving due to the replacement of discs and drums with aluminum or magnesium alloys, on the other hand, due to the greater grip, dimensions can also be smaller, which also gives a weight saving.
The unsprung weight will be reduced considerably, which leads to better track stability.
The total weight will be reduced considerably, which leads to less energy consumption.
The design of aluminum and / or magnesium alloys is easy and can be done in several ways.
Optimal implementation methods:
The brake disc and brake drums that are used have the traditional design. In principle, they do not need to be dimensioned differently. They are preferably manufactured from high-quality aluminum alloys, the 7075 alloy being the optimum.
The surface is then converted into a ceramic layer with the PEO process. Where PEO stands for Plasma Electric Oxidation. The application of the layer is preferably effected by immersion in a liquid coupled to electrolysis. Only by means of electrolysis is a molecular adhesion obtained, which is a completely continuous layer of shape and completely corrosion resistant.
